Chapter 5: Making Friends with my new patient and sneaking a treat!
From that day onward, I kept visiting the nice Elsa and the redheaded man. The girl always smiled whenever I came into the room.
"Hey, girl!" she greeted me every time.
I would bound gently onto her bed and snuggle up to her, letting her pet me. I heard her ribcage was damaged a bit from a fight at the boarding school down the road. How awful.
***
One particular day, I was in my room, eating some food. It was my break! I had not long visited another patient who had to go through needles again. But I wanted to see my new friend. You may say I wanted to go with her when she left the hospital and leave my job as an emotional support dog. I noticed a little pup come into the hospital a few times. I knew my time could come when I could be a family pet. But I don't think it is yet.
"Ah," said a nurse coming into the room. "You are finished, Button?"
She meant had I finished eating. I barked and wagged my tail.
"Go on then!" said the nurse, knowing where I wanted to go. "Elsa's waiting! And you may meet someone else. She is blind. So you need to be gentle with this one."
I understood and got to the door. Then I trotted down the corridor to Elsa's room. The redheaded man stood there, smiling at me.
"Coming to see Elsa, Button girl?" he asked.
I wagged my tail. He laughed and let me in.
"Ah," said the nurse that was in the room with Elsa. "Here she is."
"Is this Button?" came a new voice. "The dog you told me about?"
I gently made my way forward to Elsa's bed. The blonde smiled and patted her bed.
"Yeah," she said. "This is Button, Glace!"
I put my paws up on the bed, my head near Elsa's hand.
"Here, Glacier!" said the nurse. "Let Button sniff your hand."
A new scent mixed with the hospital smells. It was familiar in a way-like metal and something else, something unnatural. Elsa guided her hand forward, and I sniffed carefully. My nose told me what my eyes couldn't see-Glacier was going through something tough. There was tension in her scent, like someone who was always on edge. I gently booped her hand with my nose and let her pet me.
"Why did she do that?" asked Glacier, tickling me gently behind my ears. "Is she a medical alert dog or something?"
"She's an emotional support dog," explained Elsa. "She can sense a lot!"
I whimpered a little. Elsa put an arm around me.
"She's okay, girl!" she told me. "Just going through something back at school."
"Maybe the school needs a dog like Button!" Glacier said, letting me sniff her again. "It would be nice."
That was when I noticed it. Her eyes. They weren't like Elsa's. At first, they looked normal-just like any other human's. But something about them was... off. They didn't move the same way. They didn't hold light like real ones. They smelled different too, faintly metallic. Artificial.
Curious, I put a paw near her.
"Button wants to shake your hand, Glacier!" Elsa giggled. "To the left a little."
She tapped the bed where my paw was. Glacier gently held it and shook it.
"Good girl, Button!" she said with a small laugh. "Does this mean we can be friends, too? You, me, and Elsa?"
I barked softly and licked her hand. Of course, we were all friends!

A/N:
Here is chapter 5. I'm sorry I haven't updated this in a while. Writer's block.
Now, I would read chapters 36 until chapter 39 of Mill Brook book 1 if you want to know Elsa and Glacier's side of this. I will be skipping ahead to when Button does start being their personal dog. You get to hear all the events from her point of view, from protecting the girls and their friends from all their enemies, to meeting Shelby and being reunited with Lana, Daisy and Pixie. Now, if you haven't read Niamh's story, Pixie is Button's kind of auntie. If you like.
Anyway! See you hopefully soon for chapter 6.
Wolfie out!
