Chapter 3: I find myself a job.

I managed to get to a sheltered bit in a carpark. I noticed the sign and collapsed by it, whining. I wanted to eat something.

"Oh, hello, little one," said a human, coming to pet me.

I wagged my tail. It smelt like food!

"Want a treat?" Asked the human coming and kneeling near me.

I got to my paws and sat near them. They were wearing a nurse uniform. I swished her gently with my tail. She laughed and gently ppicked me up.

"What is a young pup like you doing on the streets?" She pondered.

She looked into my eyes. I thought she was trust worthy. I gave a bit of a yap. Don't know why, lady.

"Let me do something," said the woman, putting me back on the ground. "You don't look like a stray."

I could tell she was thinking hard. She had that kind of look. I just wished I knew what she was thinking!

It was a few months later. I was walking round the hospital, training to be a therapy dog. I felt excited to do this job. I got pets from children and teenagers that needed me to be there for them. I liked helping them to stay calm.

"Here, girl!" Said a nurse one day, putting an official  bandana on my neck with a purple thing that clipped it round my neck. "Now you are a real therapy dog."

I got excited and bounded off to my first patient of the day.

"Hey, Button!" Said a little girl, petting me.

I gently nuzzled her. She seemed to be shaking.

"Aww," said her mother. "Button's telling you it's okay."

I put a paw on the girl's lap and she shook it.

"How do you do," she giggled.

A doctor came in, petting me on the head.

"Good girl, Button!" He told me. "Keeping Lola happy?"

I smiled and barked.

"Good girl!" Lola petted me again.

I lay at her feet, keeping her calm. I could smell her fear and tickled her with my tail.

"Do you know what breed she is?" Asked Lola. "She looks like a Husky crossed with something."

"Labridore," said the Doctor.

He came over to Lola who tensed up. I nuzzled her leg.

"Button's telling you it's okay," said the doctor, stroking my back. "Right, Girl!"

I swished my tail.

"See," said Lola's mother. "It's going to be okay!"

The doctor leant over me and took Lola's arm.

"This might hurt a little," he said. "Button's here, remember!"

I got to my paws and put my head on Lola's lap. She put her free hand on my head and started petting me as the doctor did her bloods. I could tell the girl didn't like it and licked her gently. It's okay, Lola.

They giggled at my reassuring whimpers.
