(S1-C11) Legends Never Die

The saddest part of life is when the person who gave you the best memories, becomes a memory.

That one line summed up everything for Marshall, especially today. Today seemed like a beautiful day outside. Birds were singing, flowers were blooming. On days like these, the morale should've been high. The pups should've been outside, enjoying the company of their friends and mates.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Today was Everest's funeral, and the morale couldn't have been any lower inside the lookout. Despite having mostly gotten over her death, except Marshall of course, today was different. Everyone once again felt that burning feeling of grief.

There were only about ten minutes left until the ceremony started. As the husky was a hero to the town, it was an open funeral at the lookout. Anyone who wanted to could attend.

The pups were getting themselves ready, both mentally and physically. It wasn't a super fancy funeral, but they still wanted to dress appropriately. Marshall seemed even more depressed while getting ready than he usually, which was saying a lot. Then again, the rest couldn't blame him. It was hard on all of them now.

The clock was ticking, it was only a few minutes away now. The pups and Ryder walked outside. Many people offered them condolences, but in return, all they got was an unenthusiastic "thanks" from the pups. Marshall just ignored them, he was lost in his own thoughts. There wasn't even a body to bury. The only thing there was a single lone gravestone, sitting under a tree.

They all silently moved to the front of the crowd. They would've held the funeral sooner, but the only problem was they weren't sure if the dally would've been able to handle it. They knew thinking about her hurt him. However, they needed to do it eventually, and they had no clue how long it would take him to recover. He still had quite the way to go.

Speaking of the dally, he hadn't said a single word this entire time. He had only been staring at the ground, occasionally letting out a depressed whimper. He felt even worse today than he usually did. Today he was supposed to be the day he said his final goodbyes to Everest, but he didn't want to. He just wasn't ready to let her go.

After some silence, Mrs. Goodway started her speech. "Most of you know why we are here today. Today, we are here to honor one of our beloved Paw Patrol heroes, Everest. A great rescuer, and an even better friend. Now, for a moment of silence." She stated.

Everyone respectfully bowed their heads and remained quiet. A few seconds before the mayor motioned for Ryder to come up to the front to speak.

"Everest was one of the greatest pups I've ever met. She may not have always been my dog, but she was always part of the team. To this day, she was one of the most amazing rescuers, friends." He paused for a moment and made eye contact with Marshall. "And mates any of us could've asked for. She will go down as a hero to all of us." He finished, wiping away a few tears.

He walked back to his seat as Mrs. Goodway walked back to the front. "You did good Ryder, and I'm sorry to all of you for your loss." She told him as they traded places. The mayor walked back up, said a few more things, gave the Paw Patrol her condolences and concluded the ceremony.

Most of the people left, but the pups, Ryder, and Jake all stayed at her grave for a bit. All of them looked down at the grave, trying their hardest to not cry. They all took turns saying goodbye to their fallen friend until only one pup was left.

"C-can I be alone for a bit?" Marshall requested. The rest nodded and left him alone, knowing he probably needed it. Once the rest left, he turned his attention back to the grave and let out a sad, quiet sigh.

"Eve...... I know you probably can't hear me. Even if you can, I know you probably hate me. I'm so sorry I let this happen to you. I would give anything in the world to have you back here." He whispered, facing up towards the sky as if maybe she'd be up there listening. "I-I'm scared Eve, I don't know what to do anymore. If somewhere you're listening, I hope you know that I'm sorry and that I still love you more than anything." He continued, letting his tears fall on the ground.

However, the moment was put to an end, as an all too familiar voice was heard. "What a sob story. You think she would care even if she heard you?" Marshall, terrified by the voice, immediately spun around, only to be met with his worst fear. Damian.

The dally was paralyzed with fear. The one that took everything from him, was right here in front of him. He tried to open his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. He felt his breathing get faster. Tears were streaming down his face even quicker now. Just looking at the husky brought memories of all the horrible things he had witnessed.

"W-why are you here? How....how d-did you know where to look? " He asked, not having a clue on what either answer would be. In all honesty, though, he didn't care. He couldn't think straight in the moment.

"I have my ways. Plus, she was my mate too, I was before you. I have every right to come and see her grave, don't I?" The husky asked in response.

"N-no." Marshall forced out, using every ounce of his willpower to even speak. "Y-you don't get to call yourself that. You h-hurt her. Y-you killed her. Y-you......you t-took her from m-me..."

"I warned her, she was just too stupid to listen. But then again, it wasn't really her fault that she met the fate she did." Marshall only looked back at the dark husky confused. "Oh come on, you know this is your fault, you idiot."

Those words cut deep into the dally's heart. Sure, he had been telling himself the same thing, but actually hearing it come from someone else hurt more than he would've imagined. It almost felt like confirmation that it really was his fault.

"I-if you're here to k-kill me, just.....j-just get it over with." He whispered, assuming that's why the husky was here. To finish the job he had started.

"Kill you? That's not worth my time. Besides..." He paused and got closer to the dally, causing him to start shaking in fear. "I think it would be better to let you live a life of guilt and suffering. If you really want to die, then do it yourself. It's your fault she's gone anyways." He snapped, as Marshall went silent at the remark.

"Who the hell do you think you are?" Both pups looked away from each other to see Chase, who was visibly angry. The rest were behind him, but they seemed a bit more sympathetic and nervous than he did.

"Ah, so you're the famous Paw Patrol. I expected a bit more." The husky scoffed. Chase looked confused, not even knowing who this was. He just knew that he was upsetting his brother.

"Marshall, who is this guy?" He asked. The dally turned and faced him. He looked terrified like he had just seen a ghost. This was a look Chase had never seen on him before.

"I-it's him." Marshall replied, not giving much more of an explanation. The shepherd was about to question it, but the realization quickly hit him.

"D-Damian?" Chase questioned nervously. The dally gave him a small, timid nod in response, confirming his worries.

"In that case..." He stated, looking back towards the husky angrily. "You're under arrest for murder. You should be thankful that's all that's happening after everything you've done."

Surprisingly, Damian didn't look even the slightest bit worried. "Oh really? Well, I guess I'll just have to show myself out then." He replied carelessly as turned to walk away. Chase immediately jumped in front of him and showed his teeth.

"You're not going anywhere." He said. The last thing he was going to do was let him go, not after all the pain he had caused. Unfortunately for Chase, by moving in front of him, he had given him exactly what he wanted. An opening.

Within seconds, Damian was next to Skye, holding his claws up to her neck. "I will say this one time. If any of you take another step forward, I won't hesitate to kill her. Ask Marshall, he knows I'm not bluffing." He growled.

Chase's eyes widened, and has wanted to punish him for what he had done, he knew he couldn't risk the cockapoo's safety. Even besides his obvious care for her, the team would never recover from losing two members in such a short time. Hesitantly, he stopped growling. "Fine, just go. I don't ever want to see you here again." He demanded.

"Oh don't worry, I have no intentions to. I've already done what I came to do." Damian replied, nodding towards Marshall. With that, he turned and simply walked away.

"Skye, are you ok? Did he hurt you?" Chase asked worriedly, earning a shake of the head from the cockapoo, even though he could tell she was still a bit scared at what had happened. Now that he knew she was fine, he walked over to Marshall, who at this point was bawling his eyes out, and gave him a brotherly hug. "It's ok buddy, he's gone. Don't listen to him, he doesn't know what he's talking about." He reassured.

"N-no, h-he's right. I-I knew it was my fault. I-I really s-should be d-dead." Marshall cried out between tears. Everyone looked at each other worried. It wasn't uncommon for him to blame himself, but thinking he should be dead? That was an extra step too far. Was this what the husky had wanted?

"No, of course you don't pup. Don't let what he said get to you, none of it was true." Ryder added, trying to comfort him. If it had worked, he couldn't tell. The pup was still very upset. "Alright, let's just go back inside." Their leader announced.

To be honest, they were all a bit shaken up from what just happened. Skye's life was just threatened, and now Marshall seemed to be in the worst condition yet. Regardless, they headed back into the lookout. They couldn't dwell on the past forever, after all, surely that future would have to get better, right?

Although they all hoped for a better future, one question went unanswered. How would things get better for Marshall? He was at the lowest point in his life right now. For now, they didn't know, but they hoped that in time, they'd find an answer.

A vet was quietly doing paperwork in her office. It had been a pretty standard day, nothing out of the ordinary happened, she was just finishing up. Suddenly, one of the assistant vets came running into her office and knocked on the door, gaining her attention. "Haley, she's waking up."

Without wasting a second, Haley immediately jumped out of her seat and ran to one of the recovery rooms. Inside, A husky was looking around, clearly confused. She had no idea what was happening. She didn't know where she was. The last thing she remembered was falling off a cliff. All she knew now was that she was alone, and she had one main worry in her mind. The condition of a certain dalmation.

Haley slowly walked in and sat in a chair close to her bed. "Hey girl, I know you're probably confused, but don't worry, I'll explain everything." She stated. The husky slowly forced herself to calm down and listened.

"My name is Haley, and I've been your vet while you've been here. Right now, you're in an animal hospital. You got really lucky, one of our workers was out hiking when he found you at the bottom of a cliff and he called me. When I got there, you had lots of injuries and were barely breathing, but we managed to get you here. Oh, and I know this may be hard to hear, but you've been in a coma for three months." She explained. The husky looked very shocked at the last bit of news.

Seeing her panicked reaction, Haley slowly started to pet her head. "Don't worry, your injuries have mostly healed. You only need to stay here a few more days, so your body can regain its strength. After that, we'll find out who your family is and take you to them, ok? Just get some rest girl." The nurse reassured.

Although still very worried, the husky weakly smiled and nodded as she quickly dozed off to sleep.
