Chapter 20: Unwelcomed
She looked upon the clouds, hovering in front of the attention seeking sun which was slightly beaming its light right at her. A couple of boys were next to her, either stroking her hair or gazing at her. She shoved them off and sniffed, massaging her eyes and sighed.
"What's wrong precious? Something happened?" A way older man, slightly taller then her spoke as he tried to touch her hand
"Don't touch me, you moron. I'm not in the mood," She snapped, slapping the guy's wrist and pushing him away
"Ay, don't get touchy, let Sweetie darling have her personal space," Another boy, same age as her, dictated, harshly nudging another the guy.
"Aw, thank you..lovely," Sweetie gently smiled, gushing downwards to fall on his chest, chuckling slighty. He lowered his head to reach her eyes.
Chase was seeing all of this, hiding behind a stone wall, with his branded school bag on the rickety pavement, peeking with his head at various times
"Damn, this girl is cheating on her stupid boyfriend again," Chase muttered to himself, knealing down from his sore ankles
"What was that?" Sweetie inquired, pouncing off the bench, slowly moving her head side to side, Chase covered his mouth behind the wall but it seemed like he did that a tad bit loud "Shit, hide," Sweetie called out to her admirers, shooing them to another path.
She walked towards to bricks, her face gone slightly pale "D-Dwayne?" She murmured peeking her to the side, spotting Chase pretending to scower through his bag
Sweetie gasped as she glanced at him, taking one step back "What are you doing here?" She coughed, putting her hands on her hips.
Chase chuckled and clicked his fingers "Oh, you know, the casual stuff," He proclaimed as he zipped his bag closed "I'll be heading off now, bye," He rushed, pacing off.
"Wait!" Sweetie yelled, throwing a plastic water bottle at him to get his attention, before Chase turned, he sighed "Why do all the girls keep throwing stuff at me?"
Chase whooshed around, flicking his brunette hair back. His eyes widened as Sweetie started stomping her way towards him. She clasped her hands together and then came her watery purple eyes.
"Please don't tell Dwayne, please..." Sweetie begged, a lonely tear came falling down her cheek "I-I know what I'm doing is bad but.." She clasped her lips closed "I have to,"
"You have to cheat? Wow, so romantic of you," Chase replied sarcastically while grunting, fixing his bag strap that kept peeling off.
"...No! D-Dwayne doesn't even love me!" Sweetie yelled at the top of her lungs, breaking into gushing tears, dropping to the ground.
Chase raised his eyebrow and knealed down to face her "Huh? What do you mean he doesn't love you?"
She rubbed her eyes and scrunched her forehead "H-He's been using me ever since we got together last year. I thought he was the one, he seemed so calm and joyful when we started dating but now he's been a total jerk," She babbled, clenching her fists.
"So, your only solution is to cheat on him? Why don't you just break up with him?" Chase interrupted, swinging his hands continuously.
"He wouldn't let me..." She mumbled, fidgeting with her fingers which had faint slashes and a small plaster on her left hand
Chase had realised what she meant by that, those cuts looked fresh "Oh damn, I knew Dwayne was crazy but not the person that would his attack his own girlfriend," He said as he stared at her simple slashes on her hands.
"Look, I-I only cheated on him because I know he never loved me and if he did, that love is gone, I don't want to be with a man that treats me like a damn slave. And, If I can never be with someone else, I have to do it the hard way. But, he's having a tough life as well, family life and his wounds that you gave him I guess, I sadly have to be there for him," She jittered, pulling up her sleeves to reveal bandages on her swollen arm, more large volumes of tears came from her beautiful yet broken eyes.
"Lately, I've also been a jerk. From the actions he does to me, I-I transfer it to others. It's my way to express my anger and pain. Oh gosh, I remember bullying a girl who used to be in my school. I did something terrible to her, I made her get expelled, if I could I wish I could say sorry to her but my emotions got the better of me," Sweetie meant every word making her have even more guilt lunge into her, she then stared at Chase, whom had his eyes wide open.
"Expelled? D-Do you mean...Skye?" Chase inquired. "You bullied her?" He raised himself up, a bit angry, he tried to calm down by breathing cautiously as Sweetie was quite sensitive at that moment.
"How did you know?" She paled as she hung her head up, fixing her gaze at Chase. "Do you know her?"
"Yes surprisingly, she goes to my school now," He claimed, moving his eyes to the sky. "But, I'm glad you're apologising, Skye is having a rough time as well, things aren't going swell for her," Chase sighed, rubbing his neck.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. You know, I was actually jealous for her for a bit, much smarter than me-"
Chase coughed, wheezing slighty.
"-Uhm, that I actually sabotaged her multiple times, I was such a jerk back then, lost all my friends in the meantime. Dwayne and some other boys are the only things I have close to me. And my aunt, who calls me Princess hah." She sniffed, forcing herself to smile faintly, opening her eyes a bit more,
She twirled around and whimpered. "I think you should go, It's getting pretty dark and I should probably take care of Dwayne because his mum isn't going to be any help to him.."
Chase lowered his hand to her direction and with a little nudge of Chase's wrist, she finally grabbed it and helped herself up, breaking free of his hand and glancing at the other direction quickly.
"Good luck then Sweaty," Chase clicked his fingers and walked past her, Sweaty gave a deep smile, placing her hands in her pockets and started going up the highway.
Chase felt the breeze pushing him down a hill, with the leaves racing him in the meantime, he dangled his backpack on his left arm and swung it, whistling to the sounds of the wind.
He caught a glimpse at me. I was on my phone, crossing the road with no idea of my surroundings, just glued to my screen, swiping again and again.
"Skye! Watch out!" Chase yelled in agitation, goosebumps forming on his light brown skin, his neck tensing, worrying so much.
I took my eyes off my phone and caught a glimpse of a light heading towards me, my eyes widened as I ran off the road, panting heavily, a truck was almost about to hit me.
"T-Thanks.." I breathed heavily, putting my head down, squeezing my legs tightly.
I could hear Chase grunt, pulling my upwards to face him "What the hell were you thinking?!" He snapped loudly, even thought my face was facing him, I put my eyes down to the ground, my lips quivering "You could've got injured! What was so important in that phone that almost cost your life huh?!" He swished his hands on my device that were in my bare arms, veins popping out.
"Let go," I mumbled, shrugging him off, clasping my phone back. My eyes wondered anywhere else but him. But, I could also see the fear in his eyes which I haven't seen in a such a long time, I sighed and broke "I just visited my mother at hospital after school and now...she looks so different, she almost lost all her hair and she looks older than she really is now. S-she's still smiling, acting like everything's fine not to worry me but...I know it's not. I was reading the Doctor's notes and they were all bad. Every. Single. One. Them. He wrote in the latest notice that it would be a miracle if she survived.."
I wiped my tears and stared down at Chase, who was holding my shoulder in the process. "Gosh, I'm acting so whiney right now. I have no idea how felt to lose everyone that you loved Chase. You're situation was worse than mine. And now look at me, crying from this," I wailed, trying to force back my heavy tears but it didn't work.
"Skye look, my situation is quite different than yours but it doesn't mean it's worse, we all cope to these things differently. Most cry, some force their anger and others try to move on. However, we don't cry on the road as you could've broken all your body parts and lay like a statue until someone rescues you and you don't want that, do you?" He pulled my chin up softly as I lightly chuckled, my skin glowly from the dazzling sunset.
We've gotten closer, much closer. We sort of hated each other at the start, constantly arguing, we still do that but we've been able to trust each other a little more one step at a time.
"You look like you've been driven over by a truck," Chase teased, hiding his pain. "But, your house is far, damn," He clicked his tongue and looked around, his face turned into a frown "Oh shoot," He fidgeted with fingers and then gestured me to follow him.
His expressions turned quite dark after that, he started sweating and whizzing his eyes everywhere, we walked on a path which lead to a forest, light green needles stroked our shoes. Overgrown branches choked its friends. We reached the end of the last tree.
A house was there, quite faint from the distance but it seemed lonely, with only two empty homes next to it, it looked abandoned.
"Wait here," Chase placed his hands on my shoulders and slightly pushed me down to gesture me to stay put. He glided his way into the house in the middle, unlocking the blury door and going inside, he disappeared after that and well...I'm not that patient.
I waited for a couple of minutes, standing there like an idiot, pacing in circles at one spot. It didn't feel right but I wonder what he was doing. I took one step and then another.
I was actually going inside his house. I was going into Chase Gunn's house. I don't actually think any of his friends visited him after his brother died. He didn't let anyone come one step closer to his house, with one alive family member out of all the rest, he locked himself up but now, I think he's trying to open himself up again.
A wooden gate swung open allowing me to pass. As I walked past Chase's front yard, I witnessed grey instead on green, plants that weren't watered for years and a single petal hanging on for its dear life on a tippled over stem. My right foot stood in his house, a creaking entrance on his floorboards made me shudder, my other leg was placed the same exact floorboard and I breathed heavily.
I was in Chase's house.
It felt my body didn't belong in this house, the open door let in a breeze somehow trying to push me back outside, my eyes mingled still standing on the first step.
It was a one story house or a flat if you wanted to call it that, it seemed quite wide though. I lunged in and took my first few steps into the household, every step I made came with an unsettling sound. I glared right, seeing the open living room, with one streched out sofa and a mini sized television opposite of it. I could imagine the Gunn family binging to movies and play games on a tiny coffee table near the couch.
Moving my head upwards, I saw a kitchen, with only its counters blocking it from the living room, dust was visible laying on all the items, cobwebs appeared everywhere near the fridge, I walked towards it, tilting my head to face dozens of small pictures on the fridge, pinned with magnets.
The one in the far corner was a picture of presumably Chase and his brother as babies smiling widely from their mother's gaze. She was pretty, her face said it all, she was kind and she didn't deserve her future demise.
Another photo taken withe Chase and Carter showing their teeth with two other kids, both looking familiar. The girl with platinum hair and the cheeky smile was definitely her best friend Everest, his head popped out behind her with a shocked face seemed like Marshall, they all looked so happy, what happened to them now?
And then, the picture in the middle of the fridge, well, not really a picture but a drawing, a drawing with Chase, his brother, his mother and father standing there, holding hands with basic smiley faces and a twig like body. It wrote: 'fIrSt dRaWinG oF tHe FamiLyYyYy :D'
Chase's messy handwriting made it much sweeter, the first family drawing which should've continued for much more years to come but ended early...I cracked a smile and stared deeply into that drawing, analysing it until I heard a swish with a broom wiping the creaky floors and Chase rushing his chore, his eyes widened as he saw me in front his fridge, face flushing in embarrassment from his untidy home.
"U-Uhm-" I stepped away from the fridge and scratched my neck "Sorry for intruding, you were gone for awhile and..." My words trailed off.
"It's fine, to be honest, I knew my house was a mess so I had to tidy it real quick- it's not the best at the moment sorry," He muttered, dropping his broom on the floor causing a quick bang.
"It's alright," No words came in mind from the awkwardness. Chase just slammed the front door shut while I continued exploring. I slid my hand on the dusty tables and went straight to witness three rooms, one which was slightly open and two other doors remained closed.
At this moment, I really needed to wash my hands but which ones the bathroom? It can't be the room with the slightly opened door because that was probably Chase's room, so between two doors which were opposite to each other, which one should I choose?
I've gone for my gut and opened the door nearest to me, next to Chase's room and I regret it already.
It was his brother's room, I could tell from the dirt build up. It looked untouched for a long time, I took further steps into the room and whizzed through everything.
Again, there were joyful pictures hanging up those dull walls and a carpet that was wrinkled. I glanced at a opened book on Carter's table which read: Behold My Diary (PS: don't you dare touch this Chase or I will end you.)
A pile of dust made a home on it, I shoved it away to reveal long paragraphs in his diary at one its last pages, I tried not to invest into his diary but as I dropped the dirt on the already infested floor, the side of my eye stared upon a sentence which made me shook:
"I'm not doing it, I can't for Chase's sake however, how would it feel to be free from all this..pain?"
And, he did. Leaving his only brother alone in a rotting house. But, on what Chase told me, Carter wasn't having the best time of his life but leaving all the guilt on your brother's shoulders? That is just awful.
I winced from those terrifying words and deepened my eyes, I heard the door creak with Chase peeking out, his face horrified that I entered the room that he didn't dare going in.
"Oh, I'm so sorry! I was looking for toilet and I landed here, wiping off the dirt," I said at a fast pace, waving my head around.
"The toilet was near the entrance-" Chase raised his eyebrow and gave me a look to get away from this room, I felt a lump of embarrassment return to me.
"But Chase, did you know about this...?" I asked while pointing at the aged diary with the most scirbbled writing, I saw how Chase reacted confused yet shocked at the same time.
He wanted to hold back but his instinct made him enter his brother's room for the first time, locking his eyes shut and then opening them up again, he placed his hand on the diary and sighed
Chase babbled from looking at those words on the diary "I didn't know he was still writing on this thing, the last time I've seen it on him was when he accidentally left the oven on and felt guilty about it when he was a little bit younger, I wonder what he wrote..."
It struck him, Chase's gave a rare, watery eye highlight that he forced to not move down, every single word his brother wrote made him angry yet sad, he banged the table loudly and stared at the ceiling, closing the book and leaving the room followed by me. The last thing Chase read was: I feel like dying whenever I see us...every drawing he draws makes me dig a pit in my stomach from now looking back to how happy our recent years have been, it's all his damn drawings fault, as most happy stories come with a backstab in the end. I don't think I'll be in this house for long. If you're reading this Chase, I'm sorry for not being the older brother you wanted me to be, the brother you needed me to be. Let's hope I resist.
Love from, your probably dead brother... :)
