Refuge
The rain had died down since when I got home. It was at that point between raining and poring. I was going to that only place I knew I was welcome.
Peter's house.
I called him. He answered right away. "Hello?" He said.
"Peter?"
"Yeah, Rox?"
"My dad and I got in a big argument. I just can't stay at home. Can I stay the night at your house?"
"No problem. Will you tell me what happened?"
"Yeah, right after you let me in." He look out his window and there I was. He opened the window. " I figured you'd be okay with it and I couldn't stay in that house for more that 5 minutes after it happened." I started to tear up again.
"You walked here?! It's 2 1/2 miles from your house." He said surprised.
"It's not the furthest I've walked tonight."
"What happened? You said you'd tell me when you got here." I told him what happened. Then I started crying. "He slapped you!?" Pete said in disbelief.
I nodded. Still crying. He pulled me into a hug and I leaned my head on his shoulder.
Ding Ding. Pete's phone started beeping. It was Patrick.
"Pete, can you meet me at my my house.?"
"Why?" Pete asked.
"Roxy's gone. I saw her go out her window." Pat sounded really worried.
"I know dude, it's ok she came to my house."
"Oh." He sounded a lot calmer.
" Can I talk to him?" I asked.
"Sure." Pete handed me the phone.
"Hey Pat. Everything's fine, don't tell Mom and Dan that I'm gone. I'll be back tomorrow morning." I tell him.
"Ok. I was worried when I saw you leave. I heard you two fighting, what happened? I heard you yell then, dead silence."
"Pat... Dad slapped my face." I said slowly.
"He did what!? Oh my god. I'm so sorry, Roxy."
"It's not your fault, Pat. This is between me and Dad. Okay?"
"Ok. See ya tomorrow."
"Bye."
I hung up. Pete went and got me a blanket and pillow and I made a bed on the floor. "Thanks again, Pete." I say.
"No problem." He said as I fell asleep.
