Will grinned at the little girl. "Your hear looks gorgeous today, Sheila."
The brunette blushed, "Thank you, Mr. William."
"Of course. Do you want to go walk around? I have a patient I want you to meet," Will grinned.
For the most recent patients he'd been set with, Sheila was his favorite; after Nico, who'd been re-assigned to him every month. She'd only been his patient for about two weeks, but Will liked to think that they'd bonded.
Sheila smiled, "Yes, please."
Will took her hand and helped her off the bed, walking out of the small room with her. "Have you ever left this floor, Shay?"
Sheila bounced on her toes, "No. Not since mommy left."
Will looked away from the happy little girl; she'd been told her mother had just gone on a vacation and her life was happy, and they weren't sure when she'd be back, if ever. Will had worried that it would hurt the kid's feelings, but she was happy her mom was happy.
Will pressed the elevator button, waiting with Sheila. "This guy's really important, okay? He's also really sick, so you need to be polite."
Sheila grinned, "I can do that."
"Good," Will smiled, pulling her into the elevator. Sheila continued bouncing on her heels, a wide smile on her face.
It almost broke Will's heart to know that eventually, that smile wouldn't be there. It would be a grimace for pain if they didn't find a cure.
And if they didn't find a cure, he'd lose Nico too.
When they got up to Nico's floor, Will started walking down the hallway quickly, though slow enough that Sheila could keep up. He opened Nico's door, nearly dropping Sheila's hands in a panic.
Nico was on the bed, his face red from lack of air. Will did let go of Sheila's hand, hurrying over to him. He looked like he was trying to cough, but being unable to breathe stopped him. Will jammed the 'Need Doctor' button repeatedly, panic rising up in his throat. He crumpled down next to the bed, muttering worriedly. There was absolutely nothing he could do to help him, and he wasn't sure anyone had any other skills that he didn't.
Will's eyes burned as he caught Sheila's gaze, covering his mouth at her horrified expression. She hurried over to him and wrapped her arms around him, obviously trying to sooth him. Will buried his face in her shoulder with his knees digging into the tile floor.
Two doctors burst into the room seconds later, hooking things up to Nico. One of them slid a needle in his skin slightly above his collarbone, which made Will nervous. They hooked up a tube to the syringe, and liquid drained from Nico's chest.
The systems suddenly stopped and his heart rate flatlined.
