She could never be sure of whether he had ever returned her affections. She would never know if he had ever loved her, though she could only hope he had due to the way he had always acted around her and the words he had said to her.

But perhaps knowing would've been more painful than leaving it an unsolved mystery. Unsolved mysteries left more room for the imagination to run wild, rampant with promises and possibilities and pleasant daydreams.
