sixty-two
Jeongguk was the typical bad boy you'd probably avoid during college years. His looks were intimidating, sporting something black every day without fail. He was one of those guys that would make you uncomfortable with just one look; he was nothing but trouble. He liked to play around with a lot of girls and boys from different departments, hooking up and leaving before the evening ends. His parents thought he'd be hopeless; Jimin, too, doubted him just because he wasn't focusing on his studies anymore. His life was all about parties and sex.
That was until he met Lee Jieun – resident smart-pants of the university. He didn't even know the girl existed because he was too busy having fun and receiving good sex from strangers, which are obviously attending the same university as him, but he's too lazy to even get their names. Jeongguk doesn't want attachment – he loathes it, but someone just had to ruin it for him.
The way they met was like one of those scenes from a romantic-comedy movie, where they had sex before they could even get to know each other. It was during a frat party, when Jeongguk spotted Jieun inside the kitchen all alone and she was drinking banana milk instead of beer. Jeongguk rolled his eyes at the oblivious girl, stepping inside the kitchen to snatch the drink from her, but as soon as they locked eyes, Jeongguk knew he was screwed. He didn't mean to stare at her for too long; he didn't really mean to ask her if he could kiss her, making the girl too flustered that she nodded without knowing what she's gotten herself in to. Jeongguk didn't mean to take her upstairs and inside an empty room so that they could go all the way.
Jeongguk doesn't fuck virgins just because they tend to cling a lot after sex and they wouldn't leave you alone. They'll stick to you like a fucking leech and you have to force them out – hurt them, before they could even let go. But maybe, just maybe, it was the alcohol taking over that made him fuck her. He was too intoxicated, and she was too beautiful underneath him, so maybe that's why he took the risk and fucked her – hard and fast.
Jeongguk was positive that it would be him who'll walk out of the room first without a single word. But, boy, was he surprised. As soon as they're done, Jieun immediately got up from bed, searched for her clothes despite her sore body, and succeeded in putting them back on. She limped towards the door, and before she could walk away she said, "This never happened."
The tables have turned and Jeongguk was the one chasing after her. At first, Jieun got annoyed. Jeongguk would always show up after her classes, insisting to walk her home, or take her out for coffee, and Jieun avoided him like a plague. She'd always end up creating fake excuses just so that he could get rid of the egoistic asshole who's been following her non-stop for more than a month already. Jieun's patience was running thin, and so she snapped at Jeongguk when she caught sight of him guarding the gates of her house. She dragged Jeongguk at a nearby park and scolded the shit out of him. The boy just looked at her intensely before blurting out a quick, "I like you. I want to date you. I'll change for you." But of course, Jieun rejected him.
When she thought it'll make Jeongguk stop, it didn't. Jeongguk became more determined than ever, and little by little, he proved himself to Jieun and her family. 'Bad boy Jeongguk' was gone and was replaced with another one – someone gentler, more sensitive, and more loving. Jeongguk changed for Jieun because he loved her. But it was wrong, everything felt so wrong. Jeongguk's body wasn't used to skipping alcohols and cigarettes, for fuck's sake, he doesn't even abstain! However, it was for Jieun. Everything was for Jieun, and when the girl finally accepted her in her life, Jeongguk became the happiest man in the planet.
They studied together - Jieun helping Jeongguk out with the subjects he was failing, and every after class, they would go to Jieun's favorite café and have a walk in the park before going home. They never failed to make each other happy, and Jeongguk knew he's in it deep, when he doesn't see himself with anyone other than Jieun anymore. He wanted more of her, wanted to keep her forever, so as soon as they graduated college together, he decided to ask Jieun to marry him. She said yes, of course. Her parents were against it at first, saying that they're too young and that they don't even have a stable job yet, but Jeongguk was persistent and so he did won their approval. They moved into a small apartment afterwards, building a home for the two of them, and boy were they too excited to the point that they had unprotected sex during their first night at their new apartment.
Everything was going so well, until Jieun found out that she was pregnant. They fought almost every day, Jieun blaming Jeongguk for everything. The latter tried his best to not fight back, and was always worried for he fiancé and for the baby that was growing inside of her. He knew how stress can cause miscarriage, so with the last bit of sanity and patience that he had, he tried to understand Jieun and her mood swings. It was not until a month after that Jieun finally accepted her fate. She became calmer, took care of herself well, and Jeongguk was beyond relieved when the old Jieun – his Jieun – was back. Jeongguk had to do multiple jobs for him to support Jieun and their baby.
When the time came and Jieun was about to go into labor, Jeongguk was confident enough of his savings. He had managed to save a lot – he prepared himself. Well, except for one thing. He didn't expect for Jieun to reject their son the moment the nurse handed him to her. It broke Jeongguk, and the nurse could only look at him with pity. "Postpartum depression," she whispered.
He was the first one to carry their son, and he cried when he did. He was shaking – terrified, even. He was too afraid to hold such a fragile little thing because he might drop his own son, but the nurse guided him and assured him that he won't do such thing. He cradled the sleeping baby boy inside his arms, pressed a light kiss on his forehead before looking at Jieun... she wasn't even paying attention to them.
When Jieun got discharged from the hospital, she became worse. She would go out every single night, and would return home at 3 in the morning, totally drunk and high. They would always fight in hushed voices, because Jeongguk was more concerned of their child. He was too tired of dealing with Jieun; too tired of dealing with their son all alone; he was too close to giving up, but seeing Storm's face was enough to keep him going.
It was one of those nights where Jieun would come home drunk, hickies decorating her neck. Jeongguk was furious, and as soon as Jieun steps inside the living room, Jeongguk smashes the vase on the floor in front of her. Jieun immediately sobered up, too scared to look at Jeongguk in the eyes.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing, Jieun? You have a fucking son, but here you are, partying like some kind of a slut-"
"Take that back, Jeongguk," Jieun looks at him sternly, eyes cold and dull.
"Oh, wow, so now you're affected?"
"I am not a fucking slut!"
"Then why? Why do you have those?" Jeongguk comments angrily, pointing at the bruises on Jieun's neck, "Why do you smell like a man's cheap perfume? Why do you always go out a night, not even bothering to check on me and Storm if we're okay? If this fucking life that we have is still okay?!"
"Storm?"
"Fuck," Jeongguk laughs bitterly, "You don't even fucking know our son's name."
"I'm tired, Jeongguk. Just please."
"I'm tired, too, Jieun. Imagine taking care of a baby who cries every after 10 minutes and you don't even fucking know what they want, or where they're hurt! The only thing the can do is to cry and cry until you can take it no more! You're supposed to be here with me, Jieun! You're supposed to take care of Storm as I work so that I could provide for the two of you! We're supposed to help each other out, not ruin each other..."
"This... This is not the life I want, Jeongguk," Jieun confesses, tears now rolling on her cheeks. Jeongguk could only look at him in disbelief.
"And you're saying all of this now? You really have to do this now?"
"You didn't even ask me about what I like or what I want to do!"
"Because I thought that you were sure of me the moment you said yes!" Jeongguk doesn't restrain himself from shouting anymore. He knew he would have to deal with a crying Storm afterwards, but he doesn't really care because he's had enough. The silence, the pain; everything was already too unbearable.
"I'm sorry... I can't do this anymore," Jieun whispers, and with shaky hands, she takes the engagement ring off her finger, and reaches out to put it on the palm of Jeongguk's hand.
"You can't be serious..." Jeongguk says brokenly.
"But I am... I'm sorry... I'm not happy anymore."
That was the last thing Jieun uttered before turning her back against Jeongguk.
She turned her back against him, against Storm, and Jeongguk promised himself that the moment she steps outside their apartment, she will no longer be a part of their lives. She will have no one to return to the moment she decides to come back. It will just be him and Storm.
But now there's Kim Taehyung, and he was beside him the moment Jeongguk opened the door to an uninvited guest.
"This is not your home, Jieun. You never had one," Jeongguk spats at her. Taehyung's grip on his hand tightens, and it was enough for Jeongguk to calm down a bit.
"Who's he?" Jieun asks, voice cautious, but the look in her eyes were deadly.
"He's my husband."
"I don't see any ring, Jeongguk-ah."
"You don't need a ring to prove that he's my husband and that he means a lot to me, Jieun. And if you truly are smart, you don't need to be told multiple times for you to fuck off and leave because you are not, and will never be welcome here."
"But Sto-"
"Don't you fucking dare say my son's name. You don't have the fucking right to him. Not now, not ever. Now, leave!"
"No-"
"I said fucking leave!"
Jieun flinches when Jeongguk punches the door frame.
"Please, just leave, Jieun-ssi," Taehyung pleads, both of her hands now wrapped around Jeongguk's shaking body.
"I'll be back, Jeongguk."
Before Jeongguk could even utter a reply, Jieun rushes her way out. Taehyung lets Jeongguk's body lean on him, carefully putting the younger down so that he could lay and relax on the sofa. He was about to go back inside the kitchen to make some tea, but Jeongguk grabs his wrist and pulls him close, making him fall on top of the younger.
"Don't leave... Don't leave please..." Jeongguk says amidst his sobs.
"Hey, baby, I'm not going anywhere, okay? I'm just going to make you a cup of tea," Taehyung reasons out but Jeongguk was too stubborn for his own kind.
"No. I'm afraid that if I let you go, you won't come back..."
"Gukkie, I'm not going to leave. I'm not like her. I will never be like her. You make me so happy, Jeongguk. The life that I have with you and Storm now is what I want and need. Nothing could ever change my mind."
"Marry me?"
Taehyung freezes at the question.
"Guk..."
"Marry me."
"I will, Gukkie. I reallly will."
