Chapter 2
Ah, fuck it.
The cops are coming and I don't have time to hide a body. I grab Shion and run.
"Just follow me!" I shout.
He nods, and I drag him through alleyway after alleyway. Soon we approach the one I was most familiar with.
"Up here! Hurry!"
I climbed the ladder swiftly, throwing myself up on the roof. Shion lands next to me calmly. I pull the ladder up and sigh. This was my most frequent hiding place. I kept most of my things here. I slap my TouchWatch on, and equip all of my weapons. I pocket my PDA, and throw a change of clothes at Shion.
"Don't want any suspicions. I look normal, but you stick out. Only elderly people and priests wear kimono and yukata."
Shion nods, and I turn around so he can change. He taps me on the shoulder when he is finished. He has some baggy pants and a dark blue t-shirt. I stop myself from staring. No time for emotion.
"Nao-chan? Is this where you live?"
I nod. "Most of the time. I have other hideouts, but I stay at this one the most." I walk over to a cooler and pull out a Mt. Dew. I crack it open and take a gulp.
"Do you not have a house?"
I shake my head. "I'm a criminal, on the run. If I get a house, I get caught. The cops don't know anything about me except that I'm albino, and there aren't many of those in Japan. So I have to stay on the down-low."
Shion looks upset. "Is there nothing you can do?"
I think on it. "Well' they don't have my exact looks down.... so I could use my strange ability for making people overlook my presence..."
"Ability?"
I nod. "Yeah, for some reason, If I don't want someone to notice me, They won't. I could walk right by them like I was a ghost."
"So use it. You can be normal."
It was tempting. Could I do it? Not to mention, Shion was new to my time, and needed a stable place to grow...
"I'll see what I can do."
His smile was blinding.
A week later, I walk up to Shion. "Here." I hand him a small stack of papers.
He read through them and grinned at me. "See? It's a start. Let's go, okay?"
I nod. I had bought a small two bedroom apartment near a local high school. I would falsify some more paperwork and get us in as orphans. Honestly, It might help me keep a cover while I did my jobs.
It might also help me hide from.... well, anyways. I watch the streets out of habit, picking up small details of people who may be disguised as enemies. I had quite a few of them after all. Shion looks kind of uncomfortable without his sword, but he couldn't carry it for a while. I needed to make some changes to it's properties.
We show up in front of the apartment. It's kind of run down, and not all tech fancy. But, the owner of the lot gave us the deed to the entire place, so I could make alot of changes. I look to Shion.
"Shall we go in? The previous owner left all of his furniture, and we can get rid of what we don't need or buy what we do."
Shion nodded and we walk in. The smell of mold hits us like a slap in the face and I hurry to open some windows.
I grab a bag I had picked up from one of my smaller hideaways. I open it and pull out a bunch of tools and cleaning supplies.
I begin tearing down walls I don't like and scrubbing the hell out of the place. I sent Shion to the department store with a few thousand ryo to get some wood and stuff.
Several hours passed, and the house was close to sterile. It would take a while, but soon the house would be in top shape.
When it got dark, I finally decided to lay out the futons for us. I was tired, as was Shion from all the errands I had had him do while I demolished and rebuilt and cleaned and-
Dizzy. Lemme stop.
Needless to say, we slept good.
