Chapter 2
Pussies are distracting
Portia sat next to the window during English and Literature class, uneasy. She dozed off into her thoughts and didn't pay attention to the discussion that Madame A is lecturing.
"I also expect you to revise the basics just in case, I'm not quite fond of people who procrastinate as it's difficult to tutor them and that's too much baggage for me to handle."
Tch. That guy talks as if I'm some measly child. How annoying. Portia shrugged off her thoughts and attempted to focus on Madame A's lecture.
"Pssst, Portsie!" Portia irritably glanced at Saxon as he calls out her name in a whisper.
"What is it Saxon?" Saxon smiled smugly at her retort and simply snickered.
Portia gave him a sharp look, but nonetheless continued to jot down notes for class. Saxon has always been a mischievous boy growing up. He never did change, although I gotta admit; Saxon glowed up a lot, he's not the same grimy, dirty, obnoxious boy who smiles as if he isn't missing a bunch of teeth. Her thoughts were interrupted when aforementioned boy threw a small paper ball at her head. Saxon gave Portia a smug look and motioned for her to move closer.
"Saxon, I'm not gonna adjust to your needs. If you're gonna say something just spit it out!", Portia hissed. Scratch the obnoxious part, he's still an intolerable gremlin.
"Okay, okay so. I heard that my guy Vaughn Gutierrez is your new tutor.", Saxon stated seemingly amused.
Portia raised an eyebrow at his statement. "Vaughn, what? I never heard of that guy."
"Oh you know, smartest boy in our year? Vaughn Gutierrez? Damn, must be a pain having to mingle with his uptight ass!", Saxon sarcastically replied, still very amused with the situation. "Paul? Patrick? I don't remember man, something like that. Oh! I think it's Presley Vaughn Finnegan Gutierrez. Prolly, I don't really care much."
"Oh you mean Percival? Yeah, he is my tutor." Saxon's eyes lit up at Portia's response.
"Dang girl, best of luck for real!", Saxon exclaimed which made the whole class's head turn to both of them, including Madame A's.
"Mr. Vasquez! If you wish to shriek and interrupt my class, you can do it outside. You and your classmates pay me to teach not to scold. I can get paid for simply sitting here after writing the lesson, but that's unfair so I chose to discuss. Please get out if you don't wish to participate.", Madame A sternly stared at Saxon who's completely unfazed. "Now!"
Saxon simply gave a slight shrug, got up from his seat and proceeded to leave the class. Madame A continued to discuss the lesson and Portia resumed writing down notes, trying to forget about Saxon's statement. One thing's for sure, he isn't completely wrong.
It's now recess time and Portia sat on the bench, glum. She once again received a failed result in her exam, this time for History. Suddenly, she was blinded by a pair of soft hands.
"Guess who?", a high pitched voice asked, holding back a giggle.
Portia gently grabbed the intruder's hands and uncovered her eyes. "Xen? Jesus, that surprised me! How have you been?", Portia happily scoots over and offers Xen a sit.
"I'm good. I just recovered and still feel a tad cold, but other than that I feel alright. I missed you Monet! It feels like ages since we last talked.", Xen cheerfully exclaimed.
Portia gave her best friend Xen a slight smile. Indeed, it's been two weeks since they last met due to Xen unfortunately catching a flu. "I told you not to call me Monet, Lou.", she jokingly stated.
"Awe, come on Portia! Monet is such a pretty name though.", Xen whined. Portia never really liked the name Monet. It just doesn't sound right, the way it sounds, the way the words roll out of the speaker's tongue. It's just icky.
"No. If you call me Monet again, I'll start calling you Lou.", Portia half jokingly stated.
"That's just not fair. Lou isn't a pretty name like Monet.", Xen complained. Although she doesn't really find anything wrong with the name Lou, she just prefers to be referred to as Xen. "But alright, I understand that you like Portia more than Monet, I feel the same with Lou so I'll stop. I'm sorry.", she pleaded.
"Xen, I'm not mad I was just half joking, geez. No need for apologies!", Portia laughed merrily at a flustered Xen.
Oh boy did Xen get even more flustered when she noticed her crush, Saxon walk towards Portia and perhaps, her.
"Hey ladies.", Saxon greeted. "Xen, right? How have you been? Damn, I miss sitting next to you in history! Got no one to copy from last week.", he pouted.
Portia glared at the boy menacingly, she doesn't like the way Saxon flirts with her best friend. He always had a reputation for being a big flirt towards girls especially when he's aware that they're into him; a bad boy if you'd like to put it that way.
"Why don't you just study Saxon? You don't always have to rely on Xen to give you a passing grade, shithead."
"Woah, calm down tiger! I just wanted to speak to this lovely lil Asian girl, named Xen.", Saxon winked at Xen. "I might need a bit of help with History, but no worries. I'm interested in getting tutored maybe tomorrow after class? If that's alright?" Xen lightly nodded in a daze.
Saxon grinned at her noticeable blush. "Aight, see ya cutie.", with that final bit of compliment, Saxon left leaving Xen a blushing mess.
"Oh my god.", Xen whispered.
"I know right! What an ass, look I know you've liked him ever since first year Xen, I'm-"
"He actually talked to me! He acknowledged my existence! I feel so... so privileged to have been graced with his presence, dear god!", she gushed uncontrollably.
Portia stared at her best friend, bamboozled. Xen is quite the poetic yet weird one, nevertheless she's happy for her friend as long as he doesn't break her heart. Oh well, puppy love I guess. Although speaking of tutor, I wonder if my first lesson with Percival would go well. Dang, I forgot to ask Saxon what he meant in class.
Portia's thoughts came to an abrupt end when she heard a soft meow behind her leg. It's a kitten! She gently grabbed the kitten and showed it to Xen.
"Awe, she's adorable! Let me hold her." Portia gently placed the kitten onto her friend's hands and started to eat her lunch. Having been distracted by the kitten, she partially forgot her feelings of anxiousness for what's to come later.
