Chapter 13

Melanie

I'm telling you; it was him!" Evie insists, her eyes wide and filled with a mix of concern and accusation. I glance at her, my eyebrows raised in skepticism. "Melanie, I swear, it was Marcus. I saw him with my own eyes!"

I roll my eyes at her, trying to dismiss the image forming in my mind. Marcus, two-timing me? My Marcus? It's absurd. He's been nothing but sweet, caring, and thoughtful. He makes me feel special in ways I never thought possible. And let's not even talk about his... talents. The man is pure magic in that department. The orgasms he's given me are the most intense of my life.

"He wouldn't do that, Evie. You must have seen someone who looks like him," I say, shaking my head. "There's no way he'd be with another girl."

Evie sighs, frustration evident in her voice. "Melanie, I'm certain. It was him. I know what I saw."

I insist, my voice tinged with disbelief, "It's a mistake, Evie. Marcus wouldn't do that to me."

She rubs her eyes with the palm of her hands, exhaustion etched across her face. "I wish I was wrong, but I'm not. I saw him with my own eyes, cozying up to another girl."

I can feel the anger rising within me, but I push it down. This can't be true. Marcus and I have something real. He wouldn't jeopardize that. "You're mistaken, Evie. Maybe it's someone who just looks like him. People have doppelgangers, you know."

Evie drops her hands from her eyes, frustration giving way to annoyance as she rolls her eyes at me. "Fine, don't believe me. But I'm telling you, it was him."

I let out an exasperated sigh. "Let it go, Evie. You're making a big deal out of nothing."

She gives me a skeptical look but doesn't press the matter further. Instead, she changes the topic, asking, "How's Mallory?"

I sigh in relief, eager to move away from the subject of Marcus. "She's great. Just got back from a trip to Greece with Adam. They had an amazing time."

Evie grunts, feigning drama. "Will I ever visit Greece? The furthest I've been is the next town over."

I chuckle, appreciating her attempt to lighten the mood. "You should, Evie. It's incredible. Mallory took some breathtaking pictures. The landscapes, the architecture—everything was so beautiful."

Evie nods her head, her expression softening. "I can't wait to see the pictures," she says, genuine curiosity in her eyes.

I smile, glad to have shifted the conversation away from the earlier tension. "You should come by the house this weekend. Mallory will be over."

Evie raises an eyebrow. "Oh, really? How come?"

"Adam is visiting his parents back home," I explain, watching as understanding dawns on Evie's face.

"Got it. So, it's a girls' night at your place. I'm in," she declares with a grin.

I chuckle, grateful for her willingness to shift gears. "Exactly. A little girl time, some laughter, and lots of beautiful pictures to enjoy."

Evie claps her hands excitedly. "I'll bring the cosmos! This weekend is going to be epic," she declares with a grin.

We linger at the café, sipping our drinks and delving into various topics that distract us from the earlier tension. The atmosphere becomes lighter as laughter and shared stories fill the air. An hour passes, and we decide to head out. As we step into the cool breeze outside, Evie links her arm to mine.

"How about a stroll by the river?" Evie suggests as we step out of the café.

I agree with a nod, and we take the road leading to the riverbank. The soft murmur of flowing water accompanies our steps. The surroundings are serene, with trees casting gentle shadows and a subtle breeze rustling the leaves.

The river's gentle flow captures my attention, providing a soothing backdrop to the evening. I keep my gaze fixed on the water, finding solace in its rhythmic movement.

Suddenly, my arm is tugged back, and I turn to see Evie has stopped walking, her eyes fixed on something across the river. "What's going on?" I ask, a sense of unease settling in.

Evie points, her expression turning serious. "Look."

Following her gaze, I'm shocked to see Marcus on the other side of the river, walking with a blonde girl. His arm is casually draped around her shoulders, and they seem completely engrossed in each other, sharing laughter and smiles.

My heart sinks, a mix of disbelief and hurt washing over me. "No," I whisper, unable to comprehend the scene before me.

Evie's voice breaks through the shock. "I told you, Mel. I saw him with another girl."

My heart sinks, and I feel a lump forming in my throat. "No, this can't be happening."

Evie's voice is sympathetic, "I'm so sorry, Mel."

A surge of emotions hits me like a tidal wave – disbelief, anger, and heartbreak. I tear my gaze away from the painful sight, looking down at the rippling water below. "I can't believe this."

I watch in numb disbelief as Marcus and the blonde girl vanish around a bend in the river, my heart sinking to the pit of my stomach. The picturesque scenery that once brought me solace now feels like a cruel mockery of the crumbling reality before me. Panic claws its way up my throat, and bile threatens to spill.

No, this can't be happening. This can't be true. Marcus wouldn't do this to me. The words play like a broken record in my mind, a desperate attempt to deny the painful truth unfolding before my eyes.

"Melanie, are you okay?" Evie's voice reaches me from a distance, muffled and distant. I manage to nod, my throat too tight to form words. The image of Marcus with the blonde girl is seared into my brain, an indelible mark, like a bad tattoo that refuses to fade.

Evie sighs, her empathy palpable, and she gently tugs my hand. Leading me to a nearby bench, we sit together, the reality of the situation settling like a heavy fog. Without a word, Evie wraps her arms around me, a silent gesture of comfort. Tears well in my eyes, and a shaky breath escapes me.

"I'm so sorry, Mel," Evie whispers, her voice filled with genuine sympathy. "I didn't want you to find out like this."

The dam breaks, and tears spill down my cheeks. I lean into Evie's comforting embrace, grateful for the warmth and understanding she offers in this moment of heartbreak. The world around us fades as I let the pain wash over me, allowing the grief to unravel in the arms of a friend who knows there are no words to fix what's been broken.

"I never expected him to be two-timing me," I choke out between sobs, my voice breaking.

Evie sighs, her gaze turning away, and I notice a hint of regret in her eyes. Through the haze of my pain, I manage to ask, "What's the matter, Evie?"

"That wasn't even the girl I saw him with," she confesses, her voice heavy with disappointment.

My heart skips a beat, and a wave of dizziness washes over me. "What do you mean? There's another one?" I ask, desperation creeping into my voice.

Evie nods solemnly. "I saw him with a brunette the other day. It was a different girl, Mel."

The world seems to spin, and I clutch my chest as my heart pounds relentlessly. Another girl, a different betrayal. The pain intensifies, and I feel a suffocating weight on my chest. I hide my face in my hands, my sobs now uncontrollable. The images of Marcus with multiple girls, each one a dagger to my heart, play on a loop in my mind.

How could he? I trusted him with my heart, and he shattered it into irreparable pieces. The ache is physical, and the reality of the situation feels like a cruel nightmare from which I can't wake up. Evie's comforting presence is the only anchor in the storm of emotions, but the pain is too raw, too profound.

How could he?
