THREE - CITY LIGHTS
It was a dark, New York night. Police sirens were heard weaving through tall skyscrapers peppered with windows. The city lights shone brightly. A single figure crouched down, high above the streets. In his red and blue sweatshirt, the internet famous Spider-Man breathed as quietly as he could. He had just heard about a car chase happening down a nearby street.
"You got this," he whispered to himself. He stretched his gloved fingers and took a deep breath. However, before the Spider-Man could swing off the building, a fast gust of wind blew past him. He jumped back, startled. "Who's there?!" he yelled, trying to also conceal his voice. He squinted his eyes in the dim lights.
"Who the hell are you?" The Spider-Man whirled around, breathing heavily, and widened his eyes behind his black goggles.
"Oh my god..." he whispered.
There was a person perched on top of a table near him. They straightened up but were shrouded in the darkness. He couldn't see their face. The most surprising observation, though, was the wings. There were quite big but not completely towering, and they closely resembled dragonfly wings. The Spider-Man couldn't recognize the voice - it sounded fairly like a young adult male. The person looked also like a young adult male, but the Spider-Man couldn't see much.
"I said, who are you?" the mysterious person asked.
"I asked first," the boy in red said. As the Spider-Man, he had somehow gained more confidence.
"I'm a nobody."
"That's probably not true." He paused. "I'm Spider-Man."
"I know."
"Well ok then. Are you a criminal?"
"No."
"Oh ok, that's good. Then I don't have to beat you up," he said, slightly smirking. The person laughed.
"That's nice. You couldn't even catch me if you wanted, Spider-Man."
"You're rude."
"Very." The person looked at the buildings around them, and their wings fluttered in the wind. "Well it was nice meeting you. I'll see you around." Without another word, they dove off of the concrete edge and flew into the night. The Spider-Man debated about shooting some webs to catch them, but he decided against it.
The sound of sirens brought him back to reality. He would have to research about the new vigilante later. With that final mental verdict, the Spider-Man flipped and swung into New York City.
//
"Did you all hear about that new dude, like the one flying around the city?" Michelle asked one afternoon. Peter looked up sharply, then rubbed his neck.
"Ouch," he murmured.
"Don't get too excited, Parker," Dev laughed.
"He likes superhero-type people," commented Ned. Peter blushed.
The four were out with the academic decathlon team at the mall on a normal Saturday. Liz, the aspiring leader of the team, had organized the event as a sort of "team bonding" exercise. Dev had been brought along (against her will) by Ned. He still was convinced about her joining the team. Dev's da thought it would be fun for her though; he had concluded that she did not have enough hang outs and friends in the new city, and that a mall trip would be a "learning experience" (as he put it). Dev herself had Matt on emergency call just in case.
"Who doesn't love the Avengers?" snorted Michelle. "They're all big heroes."
"They're ok," Dev shrugged.
"Well anyways," Peter said, clearing his throat. "Michelle, what did you uh say about the new um person?"
"According to my sources," Michelle declared while pushing back curly wisps of hair, "there's someone out in NYC with wings." Ned looked up from a food vendor.
"Really? Like the Spider-Man?" he asked. Michelle shrugged.
"I don't really know. Maybe it's another mutant or something."
"D-do you know anything about mutants?" Dev said quickly. Michelle shook her head, and Dev slightly deflated. "Oh ok."
"Why?" Ned turned to the British girl. "Do you know any?"
"No no no," Dev shook her head with a laugh. "Isn't there like a um school here though? O-or something?" she added to be nonchalant.
"So some crazy people say," Michelle said. "Well anyways, I'll meet you guys at the food court. I have some sketches of sad people to draw." She walked off, and Dev raised an eyebrow.
"Sometimes, I don't get her," she said.
"None of us do," Ned nodded. Peter seemed to be deep in thought. "You ok, Chewie?"
"Yeah, Han," Peter said, distracted.
"Well, Leia, we have ourselves a perplexed Chewbacca," Ned whispered to Dev. She rolled her eyes but cracked a smile. Ned had started using their text names in real life, which was somewhat cringy but endearing. Peter automatically caught on. Dev still refused to play along and get caught up in yet another to-be-broken friendship.
"That's nice, Ned," she said, patting his shoulder. He laughed and walked faster to catch up with the rest of the group. Dev and Peter did the same, but the girl accidentally bumped into none other than Flash Thompson. He turned behind and grinned wickedly.
"Hey, emo freak," he said with a laugh.
"Hi douchebag," she smiled back. He furrowed his eyebrows and flipped her off, before running off. "Americans are so rude."
"Peter! Ned! There you are!" Liz called. She walked towards them against the flow of traffic and smiled her glowing smile.
"Hey L-Liz!" Peter stammered. Ned waved, and Dev facepalmed mentally.
"Hey!" Liz turned to Dev. "Your name is Devon, right?" The girl nodded, and the junior smiled more. "I'm so happy you're here with us today! I hope you like the team! Maybe next year though because it's almost third quarter. Either way, it's always great to have a new addition." She beamed again.
"Thanks," said Dev. She was glad it was close to summer; her da had hinted about Matt visiting, which would be amazing.
"Where did Michelle go?" Liz asked, looking around. "Wasn't she with you guys?"
"Y-yeah," Ned said, pointing to the food court. "She went that way."
"She said she had to draw," Dev added. Liz nodded with understanding. Some kids shouted her name from the front of the group.
"I told them not to get in trouble," Liz sighed. "I'll see you guys." She smiled once more at the trio, and then jogged off. Ned and Peter looked a bit starstruck.
"She's nice," Dev admitted.
"Yeah," Ned sighed, almost dreamily.
"Ok you two, time to get out of la la land," Dev rolled her eyes.
"Hey, Ned it's your favourite store!" Peter pointed. The three glanced into a hip-looking store filled to the brim with fan merchandise. Ned clapped excitedly and half dragged Dev inside, Peter laughed. Like usual, they went straight for the Star Wars section.
"Look at all the stuff!" said Ned, in awe.
"There's a lot of stuff," Dev agreed. "Like...a lot." The section was decked out in Star Wars themed t-shirts, hats, backpacks, toys, journals, jewelry, and more. Some had famous phrases (one shirt read, "Do or do not; there is no try!) or simple designs (lots of hats had the Rebellion's circular logo on it).
"It's amazing," Ned sighed.
"What about this stuff?" Dev pointed to another display divided in red, blue, yellow, and green.
"You like Harry Potter?" said Peter, surprised.
"N-no," Dev blushed. Ned wrapped a yellow-and-black scarf around himself.
"I'm a bumblebee!" he teased. She laughed.
"I'm not that big of a fan, but I read the books a while ago," she said.
"Oh, Peter, you should get this!" Ned exclaimed, dropping the scarf back. He picked up a small wallet with a simplistic Millenium Falcon design.
"It looks expensive," Peter said, thinking about it.
"It's only $10!" said Ned. "Hey, I'll get one if you get one. Because like you're Chewie and I'm Han."
"I guess so," Peter thought more.
"Dev could get one too! She's Leia!" Ned said happily. The two boys looked at her, and she put her hands up.
"Uh...I only have money for food later."
"I can pay for you," Peter said, handing her one. She shook her head.
"Thanks, Parker, but I can't take your money...it would be kinda rude."
"It's ok, just pay him back," Ned said, grabbing three of the wallets and going to the cashier. Dev sighed.
"Fine." She smiled at Peter. "Thanks."
"It's no problem," he smiled back.
Two hours later, Liz announced that the group was going to dinner somewhere in the city as another "adventure". The teens cheered enthusiastically and walked as a herd to a nearby restaurant. While Ned and Peter were talking about something Lego related, Dev felt her phone buzz. She took it out and smiled at the sight of Matt's name. Walking a little bit away from the group, she touched the green button and put the phone to her ear.
"What now?" she grinned.
"That's no way to greet your favourite Irish brother!" Matt shouted. She laughed.
"Uh huh."
"Hey Dev," he said. She could imaging him smiling widely, wearing one of his big brimmed black hats.
"Hi Matt. How's it going?"
"Not too well," he said, sounding unhappy. Dev's brain went to a thousand depressing possibilities, most of them including death - Matt was almost never sad, and if he was, it was a bad sign.
"W-what happened?" she said, trying not to sound frantic.
"Marc got sick!" Matt sighed. Dev let out a soft breath of relief. At least her brother was ok.
"Oh I'm sorry. Will he be ok?"
"Yeah. I think he's fine 'cause it's just a cold, thank god. But yeah, the band is down for a few weeks." Matt sighed again. "I wish sickness weren't a thing."
"Me too, Matt, me too." There was a pause, and Dev could hear Liz shouting instructions while Flash laughed with his friends.
"What the heck are you doing right now, Devon Marie?" asked Matt, clearly confused. "You aren't one for social stuff."
"Wow thanks," she sarcastically said. "I'm out with some friends. We went to the mall and stuff. Now we're getting dinner. Probably pizza."
"Pizza is great," Matt approved. Dev laughed again - her brother's usual behavior was back.
"Nice logic. University is doin' a lot for you, huh?"
"Shut up."
"Never." She grinned even though he couldn't see her.
"So what friends are these?" he said. She heard some shuffling around on the other side and imagined him sitting down in a cafe or lying down on his bed.
"Peter Parker and Ned Leeds. And their academic decathlon team. I was invited for some reason," Dev explained.
"Ooo," Matt said suggestively.
"Not like that, Matthias," she rolled her eyes. "They're just friends. And plus, they have this huge crush on another girl."
"Someone is jealous?" he laughed.
"Of course not!" she almost shouted into her phone.
"Christ, no need to yell, Dev," he said.
"Says you," she groaned.
"I don't yell that much," he grumbled. She laughed but then coughed it back when some students stared back at her.
"Hey, Dev! We're getting a table soon!" Ned called. She looked up and nodded at him
"Who was that?" Matt asked.
"Sorry, we're getting food now," she said.
"So you're leaving me for food?!" he demanded.
"Yep."
"Fine. I would do the same."
"You're the worst. I'll see you!"
"Call you tomorrow!" he laughed. There was a beep as she hung up. Dev ran up to Ned and Peter.
"Sorry I had to call someone. When's the pizza coming?"
//
Dev sighed as she flopped onto her bed. The group had finally reached their homes, Dev being the last one on the metro stops. Ned and Peter had left earlier, waving her goodbye as they stepped onto their own platforms. Liz volunteered to stay with Dev until her station came, but Dev declined politely. She could see why a lot of people liked Liz as a friend and leader.
"Hey, Dev," her da knocked on the door.
"It's open!" she said, pulling a book onto her bed with her. He came in and leaned on the doorway, arms crossed and a small smile on his face.
"How're you? How was the mall?" he asked. She shrugged.
"Fun. And I'm ok."
"Are you going to join the team?" he said. "It sounds cool." Dev shrugged again.
"Do you want me to?" she looked at him. He laughed and shook his head.
"Whatever you want, Marie." She cringed slightly at the nickname of her middle name but nodded.
"Thanks, Da."
"I'm going to make myself some dinner. You want any?"
"I'm good. We got pizza."
"Ok." He took one last look at his daughter and then walked into the kitchen.
Dev closed her door halfway with her foot (her da always forgot to close the door) and propped herself up on her pillows. She hummed a small tune to herself and unpacked her bag she had brought. A grin grew on her face as she took out the Star Wars wallet. She leaned back and grabbed her phone, placing the wallet near her arm.
