TEN - PUBLIC RELATIONSHIP
"So who are you anyway?"
"Are you asking for my secret identity?"
"Isn't this your secret identity?"
"Eh."
"Ok well are you ever going to tell me?"
"Look, Spidey, if you don't want to tell me you name, then I really don't want to tell you mine."
"Touche."
"So...how's your winter?"
"Are you making small talk?!"
"Hey! I get bored! And plus, you're here to talk to!"
"Fine. Winter is nice."
"Only nice? Is this your first time in New York?"
"No."
"You sure? It kinda seems like it."
"You better shut your arthropod mouth before I shut it for you."
"Whatever you say, Wings."
"I still hate that name."
"I know."
"And I hate you too."
"I, sadly, know that also."

The end of winter break was sad because that meant school was back. Dev spent an hour long Facetime conversation with Matt. where she complained over the fact of having to go back to school. In the end, Matt just laughed and wished her luck. She glared at him, but then the conversation steered towards his band.
Dev missed her family. A lot in fact. She tried to text them as much as she could. But time zones created complications as they always do. Additionally, all three of the siblings had busy schedules, so they were unable to talk as much as they wanted to. Well, at least Matt and Dev. Brendan never seemed in the mood for anything that involved socialness unless it was something with his law school work. Matt liked to tease him about how uptight he was, but the older brother brushed it off.
The first day back to school was a flurry of students, teachers, papers, and running. It reminded Dev of the snow outside. It was nice to be back, but another problem arose: Harry Osborn.
The only person she had told about her new boyfriend was Peter Parker, and she knew that Harry was not a private relationship person. Dev internally worried about telling other people about their relationship. For one, she was a bit scared about how Gwen Stacy would react. It was obvious that Gwen still wanted to be good friends with Harry, her ex. Maybe even possibly get back together. Secondly, the whole school would be in shock that Harry Osborn, the rich boy, had started to date Devon Jackson, a basic nobody from LA. So Dev told Harry to keep it on the low first, and then slowly tell people. He agreed, being the sweet boy he was, and they ran into few obstacles for the first two days back.
Then, on the third day, word spread like wildfire.
"You're dating Harry Osborn?!" Ned ran up to Dev, who was putting books back in her locker. Second period had just ended, signalling lunch. She turned quickly, almost dropping her backpack.
"Uh, where did you hear that?!" she said quietly.
"From Cindy, who heard it from Ben, who heard from Sally, who heard from-"
"Ok! I get it!" Dev cut him off. "So..."
"The whole school knows!" Ned said, eyes wide.
"Well shit," Dev cursed. She ducked her head from a teacher walking nearby.
"It's ok, Dev," Ned patted her shoulder. They heard pattering feet and looked up to see Peter sprinting over.
"Dev! Dev!" he said, out of breath. "Everyone knows-"
"Yeah, I know!" she sighed. He stopped and took a few breaths.
"Wait did you know?" Ned asked Peter. The latter nodded. "You told him, but not me?"
"Sorry," said Dev.
"It's ok," Ned said. "Now the whole school knows."
"Bloody fantastic," Dev muttered under her breath. She already could see some students staring at her. "Now I'm popular. Gross."
"You'll be fine," Peter said. "I mean, Harry'll protect you. And if not, we can protect you!" He gave a small smile. She sighed again.
"Thanks, Parker."
"And me too!"
"Thanks, Ned." The bell loudly interrupted their conversation.
"I kinda miss school," Peter said as they walked to their first period. Dev gave him a look. "What?"
"You're weird, Parker. No offense."
"I know." He laughed.
The earlier rest of the day went well for Dev. No one came up to her about anything, and her familiar teachers were still the same. All was well...until lunch.
"Hey Ms. Osborn," Michelle said when the trio walked to the lunch table.
"You're actually talking at lunch?" Ned said, slightly shocked. Michelle shrugged and turned back to Dev, whose cheeks were pink.
"Uh what?"
"I never pegged you for Harry," said the sweater-clad girl. "But whatever. Have fun with that."
"I'm not even...whatever," Dev sighed, sitting down. She could feel the stares at her in the cafeteria, and she ducked slightly, picking at her salad.
"Hey Dev!" she heard Harry say. The three turned and saw him walking towards them with a big grin. Dev gave a smaller smile. He was dressed in his usual black t-shirt, jeans, and high top shoes. Somehow, Harry could make any simple outfit look more official.
After walking over, he sat down at their table next to Dev, making Michelle raise her eyebrows slightly.
"Hi Harry," Dev said. He waved at Peter and Ned, who tentatively waved back.
"Hey guys, what's up?" he said, another smile.
"N-nothing much," Peter cleared his throat. "What are you uh doing here?"
"Well I wanted to eat lunch with my girlfriend," Harry said. "Can I? Oh, sorry if I was um interrupting..." He started to stand up, but Dev pulled him back down.
"Is it ok if he stays?" she asked. Peter and Ned nodded.
"Yeah, it's cool," said Peter.
"Thanks, dude," Harry smiled again. He started eating some chips, letting Dev steal a few.
"So, uh, Harry," Peter started, "what do you like to do?"
"Well I mostly have to like work at my dad's company," Harry replied. "But I like movies and stuff."
"Harry likes Star Wars too," Dev added with a small smirk. Ned nodded at her and tilted his head at Harry.
"She's right," Harry grinned. "Gwen calls me a nerd, but whatever."
"Favourite character?" asked Ned.
"Probably Luke," Harry answered. Ned and Peter exchanged quick glances.
"Nice," Peter said. Dev smiled more. Maybe this could work out after all.

"So let me get this right," Brendan said, eyebrows raised, "you don't have a boyfriend yet?"
"That's what she told me too," Matt sighed.
"It's true! You two need to stop bugging me!" Dev groaned.
The siblings were Skyping on the Saturday of Dev's first week back to school. She was supposed to be doing homework, but her brothers were more important. Sorta. Also, she made them promise to call soon and that Saturday was the best time.
"I don't believe it," Brendan said, leaning back in his chair. He was in his dorm room at UCLA.
"Oh my god," muttered Dev. Matt laughed. As usual, he was in his room. Marc was shopping for food somewhere.
"I have to agree with him, Devon," Matt said. "It's shocking."
"I don't have a bloody boyfriend because I want to focus on school - why is that so shocking?" she threw her hands up. Lying to her brothers wasn't fun, but even though she hated it, talking about boys with them was even less fun.
"Well, I'm proud of you for not getting a boyfriend even though yous've been there for like almost a year," Matt grinned evilly. Dev facepalmed.
"I hate you," she said.
"I hate you too," he said in a sweet tone.
"Well anyways," Brendan interrupted. "How's school? Da told me it's this fancy school, right?" Dev nodded.
"Midtown School of Science and Tech," she said. Matt whistled.
"I never knew it was that nice of a school," he said.
"You've never been there before, Matt," said Dev.
"It sounds fancy though," he laughed.
"It does," Brendan admitted. "You like it?" She shrugged.
"School is school," she said. "I don't hate it though."
"Ah she likes it," Matt said.
"I never said that," she murmured.
"Why do you have to hate everything?" Brendan sighed.
"I don't!"
"Yes, you do," Matt nodded. "Say one thing you don't hate."
"You two."
"Ah! She's turning nice! Someone help!" Brendan said, eyes widened. Dev facepalmed again.
"It's a medical miracle!" Matt continued on the path his brother had exposed.
"Oh my god, you two..."
"What did those New Yorkers do to you?!" Brendan theatrically gasped.
"Nothing!"
"Something's wrong!" Matt said.
"Bloody hell, you guys," mumbled Dev.
"We love you too, Marie," Brendan grinned.
"Ew."
"Aaaand she's back."
