NINE - TIMES SQUARE

Dev's first winter in New York was much better than Dev had expected it to be. Dev had lots of fun hanging out with Harry. He would show up at her house while her da was at work, and they would go out into the snowy city, sipping coffee (and tea) at small cafes or walking in the park with some other friends. Even though Dev knew he was an obnoxious boy with extremely rich parents, he still was very sweet.

Speaking of his parents, Harry tried to reject his family. Dev noticed it after about a week of dating. Not many people could notice it, but she did. Even though he acted cool about it, whenever he talked about inheriting Oscorp, he always said the words with slight disgust. She never felt the need to ask why. It wasn't her place to interfere in family business.

It was a cold morning, and the heater was running, but Dev was still bundled up in a jacket and blanket. She was on her phone, as usual, when she got a call from her older brother. They hadn't talked in awhile, only texted. She missed him a lot.

"Hey! How's my little sister?" Matt shouted. Dev laughed.

"She's annoyed at your yelling," she replied.

"And she's gotten more sarcastic!" he said. "Also, very rude!"

"Shut up," she said. She saw Matt rolling his eyes.

"Anyways, how's your uh wait it's winter for you, right?" he said.

"Mhm," she nodded. "Look at the snow!" Dev walked over to a window, flipped the camera, and showed off the outside view. Matt wow-ed in awe.

"Is it real?" he asked, when she turned the camera back around. Dev facepalmed. "I take that as a yes."

"Of course, idiot," she said. He rolled his eyes again.

"Well, rude Marie," continued Matt. "How's your break? You having fun? Any friends over? Any boys?" He winked suggestively. Dev pushed back the blush.

"It's good, yes, yes, and uh no," she lied. He raised an eyebrow, and Dev got worried that he could feel the lie.

"You're have friends?" he said, shocked. She breathed in relief but then glared at him.

"Yes I do!" she said, defensively. "Probably more than you. You only hang out with that Irish kid."

"That Irish kid is in the room!" she heard Mark's voice. "Nice to see you too!"

"Sorry," she grinned.

"Get out of here, don't you have to study or something?" Matt kicked something off camera.

"Ow!" Mark said.

"Get out!" laughed Matt.

"Ok fine fine!" said Mark. He popped up on the screen quickly. "See you, Dev!"

"Move!" Matt pushed his best friend, who ran out of the room with a laugh. "Sorry, he's bleeding annoying."

"I think you're bleeding annoying," Dev smirked.

"Well same to you, Marie," he emphasized the last word. Dev groaned and flopped back on the couch. "So seriously no guys are goin' after my little sis? I find that a bit offensive."

"Why do you care so much?" she facepalmed. "I'm a nobody."

"Why don't you wear some more colour?" Matt said, ignoring the question. "Maybe then they'll notice you like in London." She blushed.

"Shut up!" she said. "If I could, I'd strangle you right now."

"But you can't, so suck it!" he stuck out his tongue.

"You're such a child..."

"Damn right!"

"Oh my god..." Dev sighed. Matt grinned

"Hey, where's Da?" Matt said. He looked behind her.

"He's at work," she said.

"Ah, lawyer stuff," he laughed.

"Yep," she nodded.

"You're losing that accent," he pointed out. Dev frowned.

"No I'm not!"

"Mhm," he nodded. "Becoming more American." He grinned. "You're American now!"

"I said shut up!" she rolled her eyes. "I still have my accent! See?"

"Ok ok," Matt laughed. "So you have nothing to do right now?"

"Nope," she popped the 'p'. "Uh what are you thinking about?"

"So it doesn't matter how long we call? I missed your face," he said. Dev laughed.

"Yeah, it's fine. I missed you a lot too."

A few days after the two hour conversation with Matt, Dev was sitting on her bed, packing her backpack for the Times Square trip with Peter and Ned. Harry was coming too, per Dev's request. They were all very excited for the adventure. Dev had only been to the crowded area twice with her father, but he had made them leave early, so she was especially thrilled to go with her friends.

She was almost done packing her gloves, a book, and a few dollars when her phone rang. It was Harry. She wondered why he was calling.

"Hi Dev!" he greeted as she answered. She imagined his vibrant smile, and it made her grin.

"Hey, what's up?" she replied.

"Um, so, I can't go today," said Harry, tone changing to one of sadness. Dev stopped packing, sat on her bed, and leaned on the wall.

"Oh..." she responded. "How come?"

"It's my dad," he sighed. "He wants me to help out at the company today, business and boring stuff like that, and he like just told me this morning. I'm really, really, really, REALLY sorry."

"Oh, it's ok," said Dev, picking at her blanket. "Too bad you can't come though..."

"I'm really sorry, Dev," he repeated. "My dad sucks. I wish I could go with you guys." He sighed. "I'll make it up to you, ok? Maybe we can go ice skating tomorrow? I'll pay!"

"That's fine, my da is taking me somewhere tomorrow, so maybe day after?" she said, pushing her hair away.

"Oh yeah, sure! Sounds good, can't wait," he said. She could tell he was bummed but also trying to sound excited as always. Dev smiled to herself.

"Thanks, Harry, you're the best," she replied.

"Did Dev Jackson just compliment me?" Harry feigned surprise. She laughed.

"Shut up, Osborn, they don't come for free."

"I will note that. See you, Dev."

"Bye, Harry." The phone clicked, and she stared back at her black screen. Dev sat on the bed for a second, checked the time, and hurriedly got back to packing.

//

"Where's Harry?" asked Ned, once she arrived at Peter's house. "Also you know, Dev, we aren't going to a funeral." She shrugged her backpack on as they started the walk to the Metro station and gave him a glare.

Peter's aunt was behind them. Aunt May had insisted on going with them for the sake of their safety, even though Peter had protested her coming along. She was very sweet and reminded Dev of her own mother at times. As soon as Dev had stepped foot into the Parkers' apartment that one night for the movie marathon, Aunt May had given her a warm hug and warm cookies, which was taken gratefully. It was hard to find nice people, and Dev knew that Aunt May was definitely one of them.

Snow fell from the sky in little flakes, sticking to their clothes and bags. Dev had specifically bought a black scarf just for the occasion. She was dressed in her usual black: black jacket, black boots, black gloves, and black jeans.

"Shut up, Ned," Dev said. "And Harry can't make it - his dad's making him work today."

"On winter break too? Dang," said Peter. "When does he ever not work?"

"I know right," Ned agreed.

"Yeah, it's too bad," Dev said, kicking some snow. She hadn't told the two that she and Harry had been dating for about two weeks. She didn't know why, but Dev had a feeling in her stomach that one of them would not be too happy about the new relationship.

"Well we can all go next time!" Peter said, trying to stay positive. Ned nodded.

"You should smile more, Dev," he said. She rolled her eyes.

"Whatever."

In a few minutes, they were walking down the stairs into a Metro station already filled with bustling business people and pedestrians. Dev had grown used to the busy life of living in New York City compared to the more lax lifestyle in LA. She actually liked the hustling and bustling - it gave her motivation to also be busy and on her feet.

"Ok this is our train!" Aunt May called out.

The three teens, plus the aunt, boarded the subway and basically talked the whole trip which was approximately an hour. Dev laughed at Ned and Peter argue as usual about, what she called, "nerd crap," but she also got to talk to Aunt May about family and school for a few minutes.

The metro bell dinged, signalling they had reached their stop. After pushing through the thick crowds in the station, they reached the top into the cold breeze and bright sun. Taxis and people sped around even quicker than in Queens, and Dev grinned. She never realised how much she adored city environments.

"Where should we go first?" Ned said. "Dev's only been here like two times!"

"Let's take some pictures!" Aunt May said with excitement. Peter gave a small look.

"May, could we take pictures later?" he asked. She smiled and nodded.

"Fine fine," she said.

"Hey, there's the M&M factory here!" pointed Ned. "Have you ever been there, Dev?" She shook her head.

"We have to go!" Peter said. The two started walking towards a large building with the popular candy's logo on it. Dev followed them with a laugh. She could tell the day would be fun.

//

"Stop taking pictures of everything, Parker!" Dev rolled her eyes as Peter snapped another shot of the skaters in the Rockefeller ice skating rink.

"It's for yearbook!" he said. He stood back up and showed the picture to her. It depicted a flurry of skaters in the winter snow. "Does it look ok?"

"Looks great," she admitted.

"Yay! Dev approved!" Peter laughed. He slid his phone back in his pant's pocket.

"Hurry up, your aunt and Ned are walking up there already!" she said.

"Ok, ok!" he laughed again. They started walking after Aunt May and Ned. "So has Harry visited you at all over break? He kept texting me to know which cafes you liked." Dev smiled.

"Yeah, actually," she said, "we started dating a week ago."

"Oh, really?" Peter said. He stuck his hands in his pockets.

"Yeah," she said, looking down at the stained sidewalk.

"He's kinda a player," he said.

"Yeah, I know," she laughed. "I don't really know why I said yes."

"I think it's because you like him," Peter said with a small smile. "And I guess he isn't that bad of a guy. He's smart and funny and nice."

"And annoying," Dev laughed again.

"You two are like polar opposites," Peter laughed with her. "Maybe that's why you said yes? He's something different."

"Yeah," Dev said, thinking about it. "Maybe."

"You guys walk so slow!" Ned shouted.

"Wanna race?" Dev asked. Peter grinned and started sprinting. "Hey! No fair, Parker!"

//

When Dev got home, she was dead tired. Sightseeing took a lot of energy that she normally didn't have. She unlocked her home door and headed toward her room.

"How was Times Square?" her father asked. He was sitting at the kitchen table, reading some papers and wearing his "lawyer" glasses. The Jackson children called them the "lawyer" glasses because their father always wore them whenever he was doing his law work.

"Fun," she replied, unlacing her shoes.

"That's it?" he teased.

"I mean, yeah," she sent a small smile back. "I'm going to go to sleep now, sorry. Walking was tiring." He laughed. "Night, Da."

"Night, Dev," he said. "Love you."

"You too."
