FOUR - STEM CLUB
"Hey! Dev wait up!" a voice called. Devon took out her earbud and looked behind her shoulder to see a certain Peter Parker run up to her. She waved as he reached her.
"Hey what's up?" she said. He bit his lip and shrugged his backpack on more. They walked up the stairs of the school together.
"I uh didn't want to walk up by myself because Flash and uh I saw you so...yeah," he ended awkwardly. Dev hid her smile. Peter blushed a little and played with the edge of his T-shirt. "So...what kind of music do you like?" Dev shrugged.
"Depends," she said.
"O-oh ok," he stammered. She laughed. Some students passed by them, and one bumped into Peter with a snicker.
"Looks like the big time nerd got an emo freak girlfriend," Flash laughed. His friends laughed with him, and Dev rolled her eyes. Peter looked embarrassed.
"Looks like someone doesn't even have a girlfriend," she said back. Flash's friends suddenly turned on him and oo-ed. Flash himself flushed red with anger.
"Whatever, freak," he grumbled. "C'mon guys." He dragged his friends away as Dev grinned to herself.
"That was pretty good," Peter said as they finished the last steps of the stairs. The hallway was full of chatty students. Dev shrugged again.
"He was being a jerk and blatherin' in my ear," she said.
"Blathering?" Peter asked, confused. She laughed.
"Irish for 'talking shite,'" explained Dev, a wide grin on her face. He nodded with understanding.
"So Irish people really do have like a different language?"
"Yeah. It's weird."
"I mean, American slang is weird too," he laughed a little bit.
"Oh yeah definitely!" she agreed. "Yous are always saying weird stuff." Peter laughed again, and they walked through the hallway talking about random American words like "fanny pack" and "colour" with an -or instead of -our.
Dev stopped by her locker, and Peter went off to go find his best friend. As she put her books in her locker, her Spanish notebook fell and she reached down to get it, only to meet someone else's hand. She quickly looked up but then stopped when she saw a sharply dressed boy with a movie star smile. His brown hair was cleanly cut, and his chocolate eyes twinkled. "Hey," he said. "I think this is yours." She narrowed her eyes and took the book back.
"Hi. And thanks." She put it back in her locker and was about to walk away when he put his hand on her arm to stop her. She turned back and rolled her shoulders slightly to stretch out the tingling in her back. "Do you need something?"
"Accents really do make people more attractive," he said, flashing another smile. She rolled her eyes. He was one of THOSE boys. Before Dev could come up with a retort, a girl carrying three books and a clipboard ran up to them. She magically balanced them all in her small hands.
Dev examined the other girl, and it made her wonder if she herself really was an emo freak. Compared to the newcomer, she definitely was. The girl had pink sunglasses perched on top of her bleach blonde hair, big green eyes circled with perfect eyeliner and mascara, light makeup but pink lip gloss, and a brilliant smile to match the boy's. She was also wearing a shapeless, pastel yellow dress with white sneakers. It was the complete opposite of Dev's outfit (which was 90% black).
"Harry! I told you not to go without me!" she scolded. The boy, Harry, shrugged as he fixed the sleeves on his suit jacket.
"Sorry," he said simply. The blonde cleared her throat and looked back at Dev with another bright smile. Dev wondered why they both looked like supermodels.
"Hi! You're Devon Jackson, right?" she asked. Dev nodded. "I'm Gwen Stacy! In your math and english class."
"Oh. Right," Dev replied, trying to remember her. It was hard not to, however Dev usually didn't really pay attention in class.
"I'm Osborn," said Harry. "Harry Osborn." He winked and grinned again. Gwen facepalmed.
"Do you have to do that every single time, Harry?"
"Yes, Gwen. Yes I do," he answered smugly. Dev was amused.
"Can I go to my class now?" she asked. Gwen shook her head quickly.
"Oh! Sorry right, but um we're from the STEM club and we were wondering if you wanted to join!"
"What...?"
"STEM," Harry said. "Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Peter Parker said you'd be good for it."
"Peter said that?" Dev said, confused. "Well I mean, I guess so but-"
"Great!" Gwen cut her off and handed her a flyer. "Here! Our next meeting is on Thursday. I'll see you there?"
"Yeah uh sure," Dev said awkwardly, stuffing the flyer into her binder.
"Could you also put down your number and or email here?" The blonde handed Dev the clipboard and pulled out a pen from a pocket in the dress.
"Um ok," Dev said, writing down her name and phone number in some slots. "Here." She handed the clipboard and pen back. Gwen balanced them on top of her books. "Do you need help-"
"Nope! Thanks though!" exclaimed Gwen. "Ok well it was really nice to meet you. Now c'mon Harry, we're going to be late for history!" She ran off again.
"She's very hyper," Harry stated.
"I couldn't tell," Dev said. He laughed.
"Hope to see you around more, Devon Jackson," he winked at her once more and walked off.
"It's Dev," Dev muttered. She took a deep breath and thought of Harry as she walked to her first period. What a player.
//
"So I met um Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy. That's their names right?" Dev said during lunch. Peter and Ned both looked up. "Those people." She pointed, and they all turned to look at Gwen and Harry sitting with a large group of laughing friends.
"The rich kids? They're kinda cool," Ned shrugged.
"They said Peter told them I should join STEM or whatever," she looked at Peter, who looked down at blushed.
"You're really good at tech and stuff," he murmured. Ned laughed.
"I agree," the boy said. "You'll like STEM. Hey!" His face lit up. "If you join STEM, you should join Aca Dec!"
"Sorry what?" Dev raised her eyebrow.
"Academic Decathlon!" he said excitedly.
"Oh that."
"Yeah! It's super fun! Me and Peter are on it!" Ned smiled. She nodded.
"Ok maybe. It sounds intense though," she said. Peter shrugged.
"It's alright."
"Who's the student leader?"
"Well Liz is on her way to the top," Ned said with a dreamy smile.
"Liz Allen, right?" Dev asked. "That junior girl?" The boys nodded.
"They've had a crush on her since the beginning of the year," Michelle commented from down the table. Dev laughed.
"Is that so?" Dev smirked.
"N-no!" Ned blushed. Peter was blushing slightly also.
"It's ok, I can keep yous' secret," Dev said, still laughing.
"Whatever," mumbled Ned. He looked back down at his food. Dev glanced at Harry and Gwen again, and she saw Harry looking back at her. He caught her eye and winked with a grin. She felt her face flush, and she looked away.
A few days later, the trio were at lunch again with Peter and Ned debating about something science related. They had also just been telling Dev about Harry's father, who owned a big science company where they had had visited one month for school. Peter looked a bit uncomfortable talking about the field trip, especially when Ned mentioned the "creepy spider room".
"Are Harry and Gwen dating?" she asked. The two boys looked at her and shook their heads.
"They dated for like half a year, then broke up, then started dating again, then broke up, and now are just staying friends apparently," Peter said. "I've known Harry for awhile."
"Wow. That's complicated," remarked Dev. Ned laughed.
"Yeah. Why do you wanna know?"
"They just seem like the cliche couple of the school," she shrugged.
"They are," Michelle said dryly. She was sketching in her small journal again.
"Well..." Peter tilted his head downwards. "Not anymore?"
"Hey, are they coming over here right now?" Ned said, looking over Dev's shoulder. She turned and saw Harry and Gwen getting up from their table. She turned away.
"I hope not," she muttered. The two had been bugging her about joining their STEM club. Gwen also kept telling Dev about ASB, which had becoming slightly annoying along with Harry's sudden "subtle" flirting.
"Well if it isn't Devon Jackson!" she heard him say behind her. Dev rolled her eyes and turned to him with a raised eyebrow. Harry was wearing another clean and pressed suit. It was grey, and he hadn't bothered to put on a tie over the white dress shirt. It was annoyingly attractive. His brown hair was, as always, swept to the side messily, and his big grin blew everyone away. The whole look was making girls around them swoon. Dev, however, was not fazed.
"Don't pretend that you don't know who I am," she said. He raised his hands and put on a small pout.
"No need to get mean, Jackson," he said.
"Oh I'm sorry," Dev apologized with a bit of sarcasm. "Did I hurt your million dollar feelings?" He laughed.
"I like your spunk too much for that."
"Jesus Chri-"
"Dev!" Gwen interrupted with a big smile. Her glowing blonde hair was tied back in a loose ponytail, and her makeup was flawless as always. She had a simple white shirt half tucked into some skinny jeans. Dev gave a small sigh. She couldn't imagine surviving high school with the two supermodel teens.
"Hi."
"Hey Harry," Peter waved from the other side of the table. Harry grinned more.
"Peter Parker! What's up?"
"N-nothing much," the smaller boy shrugged. Dev noticed he was trying to be "cool." It made her smile. Oh teenage boys.
"So! Any thought on the ASB thing?" Gwen asked brightly.
"Uh..." Dev pretended to think (she hadn't thought about the topic at all actually; although, Brendan would probably want her to join). "Ah shit, I need to call him," Dev murmured under her breath.
"What?" Gwen said, confused.
"Uh I said um I still need to talk to my da," Dev said quickly. "About it all. 'Cause after school stuff and...stuff."
"Oh ok! No problem!" Gwen smiled again. She glanced down at her phone, which somehow was in her hands that were already full with books. "Come on, Harry. Cindy is texting me to meet her in 235. See you guys!" Harry winked at Dev again before letting himself get dragged off. She rolled her eyes.
"He's into you," Michelle said with no emotion. Dev turned to her and gave a grimace. "What? It's the truth."
"N-no I think he's just being Harry," Peter shrugged. Dev smirked.
"You jealous, Parker?" laughed the Brit. He shook his head quickly.
"Harry's just acting like Harry," Ned said, matching Peter's tone. "It's probably nothing."
"Whatever," Michelle said. She went back to her sketching. Dev shook it off and hoped it was probably nothing. She couldn't afford having a boyfriend or a crush. They were too much work.
//
"He what?!" Matt yelled. Brendan winced.
"Ouch," he said, rubbing his ear.
"Oh shut it," retorted the younger boy. Brendan raised an eyebrow.
"By Jesus, you two act like married couple," Dev groaned. When she got annoyed by her brothers, she went into what they called "Irish Mode." The two rolled their eyes at her.
"You are so dead when we come and visit you, Devon Marie," Matt grinned. Dev facepalmed, and Brendan shrugged.
The Jackson siblings were having a group Facetime. Dev watched her brothers from her laptop. Their father went back to work after driving her home. A week after her first conversation with Harry Osborn, Dev realised how much she missed her brothers and had texted them. Thankfully, they were all up.
"I regret calling you two," she muttered. Matt laughed.
"So back to this boy," Brendan said.
"I shouldn't have told yous about him," Dev groaned.
"Well he seems interesting," Matt said, shifting around in his bed. "What's his name again?"
"Harry," she said. "Harry Osborn."
"Right right," Matt said. "Hm...well, keep flirting with him."
"What?!" Dev exclaimed, almost dropping her pencil. Matt laughed more, and Brendan grinned.
"You're obviously flirting, Marie," he said matter-of-factly.
"Shut up...and my name is Devon," she grumbled. Dev secretly hated being called Marie, making Brendan call her by it often.
"Yeah yeah, we all know, Marie," Brendan waved his hand while grinning. He leaned on his elbows. "But seriously. You're flirting with this Harry person."
"I am...not!" she protested. The two laughed more, and she felt her face flush.
"We all know you're telling the truth," Matt said sarcastically.
"If I could punch you through the screen, I would," she mumbled.
"You couldn't punch me even if you wanted to," Matt declared. "I'm too quick for you, Dev."
"I could beat both of yous," Brendan said, crossing his arms. The other two scoffed.
"We could totally take you down," Dev said. He shook his head.
"I disagree."
"Hey, just 'cause you're a lawyer now or whatever doens't mean you can talk shite to us!" said Matt. Brendan shrugged.
"So what did this boy do to you, Dev?" he said, turning his attention back to his sister. She felt herself blush.
"Nothing! Geez, yous make it like he did something bad," she said.
"No you made it sound like that," Matt raised an eyebrow. She rolled her eyes again.
"Well Harry's just being annoying," said Dev.
"Well if he's annoyin' you anymore, I'll fly myself down to New York and beat the crap out of him," Matt proclaimed. Dev burst out laughing.
"You couldn't even kill a spider," Brendan said, unimpressed. Matt looked offended.
"Shut up! That was one time, you bastard!"
