FIVE - SECOND CHANCE

It was a warm, spring afternoon. In her after lunch history class, Dev felt her eyelids go heavy and her head nod off. She quickly pinched her arm to help prevent herself from sleeping in class. She didn't want the teacher to call her out. Dev yawned, covering her mouth, and then rubbed her eyes. Someone slid over a piece of paper onto her desk.

"Are you ok?"

She turned to see Harry Osborn writing down his history notes, pretending not to smile. Dev rolled her eyes and slid the paper back after writing a few words. He laughed loudly then started to feign coughing his throat when their teacher looked up at them.

"Yeah - stop staring at me, Osborn. Keep your pretty eyes to yourself"

The rest of the class went slowly with Harry trying to wake Dev up by slipping little notes and making her hide her laughter. She hated to admit it, but as oblivious as Harry was, moments with him were the highlights of her day. She tried to suppress the feeling of thinking he was an ok person, but she always failed. He also didn't seem to want to stop annoying her. It was charmingly irritating.

"I made you laugh, didn't I?" he said eagerly after the bell rang. Today, he was in jeans and a simple black t-shirt. Dev, of course, was in black jeans, a navy shirt, and a thin black jacket.

She pulled up her backpack onto her shoulders. One more class to go. The thought of Ned and Peter waiting for her in the next one comforted her slightly. Dev yawned again and shook her head.

"Did it look like that?" she said with a small smile. He grinned and put his backpack over one shoulder.

"Sure did, Devon Jackson," he laughed. Dev rolled her eyes, and the two walked out of the classroom.

"It's Dev," she shot back. Harry put his hands up in defense.

"Sorry, Miss Jackson." He grinned more.

"Why're you following me, Harry?" asked the Brit as he continued to walk next to her. He shrugged. They reached her locker, and as Dev opened it, he leaned on the one next to her's.

"Because you're a cool person? Take a compliment, Dev," he said. She rolled her eyes again and closed the metal door. He smiled widely (it usually worked on every other girl).

"That's nice," she said sarcastically.

"Ok sorry," Harry apologized. He straightened up and looked down at his worn Converse. "Look, Dev, I know when we first met, I kinda acted like a complete f-boy."

"That's an understatement," Dev scoffed.

"Yeah, and I'm really sorry. I guess it was because I wanted to give a good impression, but it obviously was sorta stupid. I'm not that bad of a guy, I swear!" He looked back up at her and gave another smile. "What I'm saying is...will you give me a second chance? I think you're really cool and smart and just a like different person. In a good way of course. You get what I mean." He rubbed his neck. "This came off flirty, didn't it? Dang..."

"No it's fine," Dev said, allowing herself to laugh at his unusual awkwardness. "I'll give you a second chance, Osborn. But don't be an ass, and we can get along. Maybe." Harry grinned and nodded.

"Thanks. And I won't. Maybe," he echoed with a wink. Dev groaned, and he laughed. She smiled, but before he could say anything else, the bell for the end of passing period rang. Students began to scramble to their classes. Locker closed, and sneakers squeaked all around the hallways. "Well, you have class so I won't hold you. See you later, Jackson!"

"Bye!" She waved as he ran off. Dev noticed a piece of folded paper on the ground. "Wait you forgot...something," she sighed, seeing he had already ran to another hall. She glanced at the paper as she stuck it in her pocket and realised it had her name on it. "What are you up to, Osborn?" She unfolded it and bit back a smile when she saw some numbers. "Oh you are a sneaky bastard." He reminded her of someone.

A class period and ten minutes later, Ned, Peter, and Dev walked out of their English classroom feeling confused but also somehow "enlightened."

"I've concluded that the story was shite," Dev rubbed her forehead. "What was the main theme? Was there even one?! We shouldn't have gone in afterschool to talk to her about it. Why did we think she'd help? I mean, extra credit isn't worth all that. Whatever that was." She pushed a piece of hair behind her ear.

"Ms. Regstad said it was something with friendship," Peter offered.

"Yeah, but I was hoping he was going to kill his best friend instead," she frowned.

"You always want that kind of stuff, Dev," Ned laughed. "Wait till we get to Edgar Allan Poe."

"One of the best writers ever!" she defended. He laughed again.

"'The Pit and the Pendulum' is a pretty good one," Peter confessed.

"Thank you!" Dev nodded in agreement.

"I think 'Mice and Men' was good too, though. And that one is dark," Ned pointed out. Dev made a so-so hand motion. Her phone suddenly buzzed in her back pocket, and she pulled it out to see who was calling her.

"Who's that?" Ned said with a smirk.

"My brother, thank you very much," Dev said with a raised eyebrow. Ned blushed a bit, and Peter laughed. "Don't you two have a decathlon meeting?"

"Oh shoot, you're right," Ned widened his eyes. He and Peter headed off in the opposite direction.

"Alright, I'll see you guys tomorrow." They waved as she went towards the entrance and exit of the school. Sliding her thumb across her screen, she raised the phone to her ear and smiled.

"Hey Dev," Brendan said with little emotion (compared to Matt's crazed greetings).

"You're very monotone," she commented. She heard him laugh and then shuffle around. "Why'd you call me?"

"Can I not call my little sister?" he scoffed. Brendan's accent was similar to hers, a mix of British and Irish. Matt was mostly Irish since he lived there still. However, Brendan had started to take on a slight Californian accent while the other ones faded away. Dev often though their family was a mess of accents, something she thought was very unique.

"Did Da not pick up his phone?" she sighed. He cleared his throat.

"Why?"

"Because you'd only call me to tell me to tell him something," she said.

"Ok fine, you caught me," he said.

"Not a very good quality for a lawyer," she said with a smile.

"The lying or the getting caught? Because all lawyers lie. It's a thing."

"Uh huh. And the second one." Dev looked at the crowded street to see if her da was anywhere nearby. No luck. "Anyways, what do you want me to tell Da?"

"Tell him that summer works," Brendan replied. "Ok bye-"

"Wait!" Dev cut him off, clearly confused. "The hell does that mean? Are you and Da talking in code or something?"

"No..." he said. She imagined him shaking his head.

"Brendan, tell me what's going on."

"It's a surprise, ok? I'll text you and Matt later if that would make you happy."

"Fine," she muttered.

"Sorry, class is starting now. Talk to you later, Marie!" With a beep, the phone went silent and Dev put it in her pocket, sighing with a little disappointment. Her hand brushed a piece of paper, and she pulled it out, trying to cover her smile. She heard a familiar honk and stuffed the paper back into her jacket.

"Hi Dev! How was school?" her da asked with a big smile. She got into the car and put her backpack on the floor.

"It was fine."

"Any new friends? I know that you can get lonely when you start eating a lot of chocola-"

"Da!"

"What?"

TWO HOURS LATER

Peter sat in his room, twirling around in his spinning chair. After trying to do homework, he became bored and longed to go outside to practice more tricks for his newly found powers. His phone buzzed - someone was calling. He went into the temptation of looking at it and saw Dev's name and contact photo (which was a picture of her trying to run away from the camera). He slid the button across.

"Hey Dev," he said, trying to sound smooth. Unfortunately, he just sounded like normal Peter Parker.

"Hey, Parker," she said in the accent he had grown to get used to. "Have you done physics yet? It's the most confusing thing I've ever looked at. Ever." Peter smiled, trying not to laugh.

"No not yet sorry," he said, pulling out the physics homework from the pile. "But I have it in front of me, so do you still want my help?"

"Yes please," she said gratefully. "I'm so lucky to be friends with the best in the class." Dev laughed. He smiled to himself.

"No problem," he said, putting the phone on speaker on his desk. "Which one is the hardest one?"

"Um...all of them?" she suggested.

"Ok, well we can start with the first one..." Peter continued to explain the complex equations to Dev, who listened intently.

After about an hour, Peter was still at his desk, working hard on another physics problem with Dev. He liked working on homework with her. It seemed more fun, even though homework was never fun.

"So x=3?" asked Dev.

"Uh huh," Peter nodded, even though he couldn't see her.

"Thank god that was the last one," she sighed. He laughed. "I think if there was any more, I'd die of physics overload."

"Sure, Dev, sure," he said.

"Thanks for helping, Peter," she said as if she was smiling. Peter blushed to himself.

"No problem. Anything for a friend, you know?" She laughed.

"Alright, well I gotta do history so I'll talk to you later!"

"Bye-" Peter was cut off by her hanging up. He slightly sighed and put his phone down with a smile. Dev was cool. He shook his head. She was more than cool.

But that was normal to think, right?
