Demons

Chloe's POV

Max's leg is twitching nervously up and down, hitting the dashboard occasionally. I put my hand on her leg and flash her a look to stop being so nervous. She rubs her neck and sighs, annoyed by the tension and secrecy. I take her hand and hold it tight.
"I know it is nerve wrecking, just 10 more minutes. You think you can handle that?"
"Wait ten minutes... this road."
She releases my hand and leans forward staring into the darkness of the road ahead.
"Are we going to the light house?"
I keep my mouth shut just to fuck with her, God I'm such a good wife.
"Chloe are we going to the lighthouse."
I shrug my shoulders but can't control the smile appearing on my face by Max her enthusiasm.
"God you are so annoying!"
"Hey... leave God out of this.
He didn't do anything wrong."
"Oh ha-ha holy Price."
She rolls her eyes and leans against the door, her gaze drifting to the outside where the trees creep up from the shadows. Maybe I should watch the road instead of Max but she is just so damn beautifull.
From the corner of my eye I spot a deer and immediately put all my strenght in my right foot, pushing the break down all the way while grabbing the hand break and turning the car in a drift like movement.
The screams of Max and I go in unison with the screeching of the rubber.
We come to a halt and I grab Max her hand.
"What the fuck was that!"
Max yells in panick holding her chest and squeezing my hand as if I'm the only thing she can hold onto.
"A deer?"
I say confused by our almost accident.
Max looks in the rear mirror trying to see if I hit the animal but I didn't hear a thump, I think I successfully dodged it.
I release Max her hand and grab the flashlight I have stashed in the dashboard compartment.
"What are you doing?"
Max says grabbing my arm before I can get out the car.
"Checking if I hit something."
"Not without this."
She hands me a gun. My confusion is clearly visible because she starts explaining.
"I know it sounds paranoid and stupid and you will probably disagree with it but..."
I frown and interrupt her.
"We'll talk about this." I take the gun and stuff it in my pants. "Later."
She nods with a defeated look, ashamed and eyes filled with regret try to escape mine but I gently put my hand on her cheek and turn her back to me. I give her a kiss, you never know when it could be the last.
I get out the car and turn on the flashlight immediately greeted by the bark of a tree dangerously close to the hood of the car. We were so lucky, too close for comfort. Clouds form out of my mouth like smoke as it is currently freezing, yet no snow at least not yet.
I make my way to the back of the truck, I see dents and scratches but those were already there from the countless times I crashed the car when I learned to drive with my mother. Nothing seems to be wrong with the truck, no blood or new dents, it's still just a beat up red truck.

Max's POV

I hear Chloe walking around the car checking every litlle inch of the truck.
I see her shrugging her shoulders and shivering if the cold as she steps back into the car.
"Nothing, we were lucky."
She sighs and hands me the gun.
I want to explain why I have it but she just shakes her head.
"Later."
I lay the gun in the dash board compartment together with the flashlight.
Chloe backs up the car and continues to drive towards what I think is the lighthouse.
After a long painfull silence full of fear and adrenalin I see the lighthouse appear in the distance.
I was right we pull up at the forest and Chloe takes my hand.
"I love you Max but what you are about to see will bring back a lot of pain, pain we always just kind of hid away but now." She pauses and stares deep into the forrest. "We need to face the truth even when it's nightmare fuel even when you still want to deny it ever happend."
I don't understand Chloe her riddles and mysteryousness about this whole situation, it kind of makes me nervous and she notices it. She hugs me tight and kisses my forehead.

"Don't worry I'll hold your hand like I have done for decades and we'll get through this together."
We get out of the car and she switches on he flashlight once more. Our breath creates frosty clouds as we venture into the dark forrest walking hand in hand. For some reason the forrest is awfully quiete as if all the animals decided to continue sleeping. Even the wind was barely making noise the only sound that could be hear was of our boots cracking the leaves that had fallen during autumn.
We arrive at the light house, both of us didn't dare to speak a word even when I wanted to there was nothing I could say that wasn't a question that Chloe would just brush off with a "You'll see."
She takes a key from her pocket and opens the door of the lighthouse. She turns on a switch and little Christmas lights illuminate the stairs.
"After you m'lady."

I anxiously walk up the stairs not having the slightest idea what I'm about to see and when I reach the top I can't help but drop onto my knees and hide my face into my hands.
Chloe kneels next to me and holds me tight as she whispers into my ear.
"Don't fight it Max it's time to accept and take responsibility for what we have created."
I lift my head and stare at the wall covered with pictures of me and Chloe scribbled with blood and markers saying awful things. Thumbtags are placed on the places me and Chloe have visited each color coded for the amount of time we had stayed in some place.
A whitboard with my old class mates with a cross standing next to some of them indicating that they were allies. Warren, Nathan, Brooke and even Alyssa have a red cross next to them.
"This is what we did to her Max." Chloe sighs tears flowing over her cheeks as she grabs a tin box from underneath the wooden table with several knifes and guns displayed on them.
Chloe takes a photo out of it the one of her and Rachel, one where the both of them looked genuinly happy a picture I despised and hoped to never see again.
I finally get it. This was Rachel's secret hide out, this is where she planned to kill me.
