Chapter 22

Ghost carefully pulled into the cracked, uneven driveway. The house before him was small and dark, its walls covered with dirt. The perimeter of the property was lined with a tall wooden fence, which was topped off with barbed wire. The posts were adorned with scratches and even a few bullet holes. Ghost drew a nervous breath.

"Is this the right one, Jimmy?" he asked, glancing over at his brother.

"Yep!"

They hopped out of the car, slowly walking up to the front entrance.  He unlocked the door, honestly feeling quite nervous. He had no idea what to expect. This was the home of a couple of the most notorious criminals in the country. He pushed the door open, looking around in wonder. The house was shockingly well kept. Everything was clean and in pretty good condition. There wasn't a single cobweb in sight.

"This place is pretty nice! ... do you like it here?"

"I do. Gavin is awesome, and he takes care of everything. He even tucks me in at night!"

Ghost smiled.

"He really tucks you in, huh?"

"Yeah! Do you wanna see my room?" Jimmy questioned. Ghost nodded, and his twin grabbed him the hand, pulling him down the dimly lit hallway. At the end of that hallway on the left side was a dark door with a sign on it. The sign had a big crudely drawn smiley face on it, as well as a flower and a stick figure cat. He tried not to laugh at this. Jimmy opened the door, pulling him into the space. The room itself was home to a nice sized bed with an array of stuffed animals on it. On the floor, among other things, was a half torn notebook and a bunch of markers. That's when Ghost spotted it. Half way tucked under the bed was Jimmy's knife. Even just seeing it sent shivers down his spine. Ignoring what he just saw, he shifted his focus to the drawings haphazardly taped to the wall.

"... this is a really cool room. I see you've decorated a bit."

"I have! That one's me and Gavin, this one's Johnny as a wolf, and that's you!" the killer explained, pointing to each individual piece of paper. Ghost stared at them for a moment before giggling quietly.

"I like Johnny's teeth in this one. They look like little slices of pizza."

Jimmy just grinned, sitting on the edge of his bed. Ghost did the same. It felt kind of weird to sit with his brother like this. It was certainly something they didn't do very often. After a few more minutes of Jimmy talking about his art, he suddenly stood.

"Do you want to see more of the house?"

Ghost thought for a moment before nodding quickly.

"Sure. Lead the way."

He followed his twin down the hall, happily listening to Jimmy talk about the house. Everything seemed pretty normal. That was, until they got to what he assumed to be the basement door. That's where the tour stopped.

"... I'm not allowed down there unless Gavin's here."

"Oh? Why?"

"Because he thinks I'll mess things up or something."

"Mess things up? ... can I see? I'm sure if I come with you he'd be fine with it." Ghost told him. Jimmy stood silently for a minute before letting out a little sigh. With that, he opened the door. A wave of cold air washed over them as they made their way down the creaky stairs, and when they reached the bottom, Ghost was amazed. The walls were covered in writing. Some of it was just mad ramblings, but some of it were numbers. Equations that he had never seen. There was a large table in the corner, which was covered in papers. Blueprints and notebooks galore. It was actually quite amazing how advanced some of this stuff was.

"I don't know what any of this is, but he says it's important." Jimmy mumbled. Ghost took a while to read the pages. It was a lot to process. He really wanted to ask Gavin what it was all about, and became a bit frustrated when he realized he couldn't. He technically wasn't even supposed to be down there. Making sure that Jimmy wasn't paying attention, he took a few pictures of the papers to show Johnny later. Turning, he realized that Jimmy was spacing off pretty hard.

"Are you ok?" Ghost asked. The man quickly snapped out of it.

"I'm ok! ... I was just thinking about what happened earlier."

"... what happened earlier?"

"I stabbed Gavin! He said it was ok, but I still feel really bad about it." Jimmy sighed. Ghost nodded, giving him a small pat on the back.

"Well... he's not here right now. Do you wanna do something to make it up to him while he's not here?"

"Good idea! What should I do?"

"I don't know. Maybe you could draw something for him! You seem to like drawing a lot." Ghost suggested. Jimmy's eyes lit up, and without another word, he disappeared upstairs.
