Chapter 17
"Sir, we need to go!" Johnny yelled from the living room. Ghost ran to join his friend. The Brit hardly ever raised his voice, so he knew it must've been serious.
"What's wrong?! What happened?!"
"Gavin and Jimmy are in trouble. We need to leave as soon as possible!"
Ghost's heart skipped a beat, and his blood ran cold. Whenever anything bad happened to either member of the criminal duo, it was usually pretty extreme. Especially if they were calling for help. He just hoped that they weren't hurt. Running to the bedroom, he quickly pulled on a pair of jeans and his favorite hoodie before grabbing his bag. It was always filled with various pieces of equipment. Ghost had a feeling that he would need all of it. He quickly rejoined Johnny in the living room.
"I'm ready to go. Where did they say they were?" he asked as he slipped on his shoes.
"The old park on the north side of town."
"The one near the field?"
"Yes, Sir."
Ghost drew a nervous breath, nodding slowly. That was the park where they trapped Cardboard Friend. The next thing he knew, they were on the road. Glancing over, he could tell that his friend was concerned. Johnny kept reaching up, scratching at his stubble and running his hand through his hair. Ghost was very alarmed by the sight that he saw when they pulled up behind what he knew to be Gavin's truck. There in the grass were Jimmy and Gavin, unmoving. The investigators hopped out, quickly running over.
"Are you two ok?!" Ghost gasped, crouching down next to Jimmy. To his surprise, his brother turned, immediately pulling him into a hug. Gavin stood, and the Brits quickly began to talk.
"Now, tell us exactly what happened." Johnny ordered.
"I-... I don't really know what happened! All I know is that something made Jimmy and I see things."
"Like what?"
"Mom. I saw mom." Jimmy whispered, glancing up at him. Ghost frowned.
"You saw mom? How?" he asked. Gavin spoke up.
"There's some sort of monster in the woods. It reaches into your brain and pulls out your deepest, darkest memories of people that have passed. Then it seems to imitate them and make you think you're talking to whoever it may be." the older man explained. Ghost was astounded. It had been nearly a year since he had heard of anything like this. He exchanged a glance with Johnny.
"And that's why you saw mom, right Jimmy?"
The killer nodded and stood.
"Yeah. We need to find that thing again and-... and confront it!"
"I agree. Are you all willing to go?" Ghost questioned. Everyone nodded. With that, they slowly began to walk towards the dirt path once more. He felt a shiver run down his spine as soon as they reached the edge of the woods. Gavin looked especially nervous, even more so than Jimmy. Johnny stood next to his fellow Brit, staring at him with soft eyes.
"What's wrong, Gavin?"
"I just don't want to see what I saw again."
"Who did you see?"
"... it doesn't matter." Gavin muttered. Ghost was about to ask a question when his thoughts were interrupted by a quiet voice. The hair on the back of his neck stood up straight. He grabbed one of his small radars, turning it on. It soon began to beep, leading him deeper into the woods.
"I've got something, guys." he whispered, keeping his gaze down towards the screen. The little screen showed where he was, as well as where the entity was. According to the tool, it said that the creature was right beside him. Ghost glanced over, his eyes growing huge when he came face to face with a dark cloud. The cloud soon took form. A familiar form. It was his mom. He hadn't seen her loving face in so many years. Her deep gray eyes met his own in a surprisingly warm way. It was comforting, but also sad. It reminded Ghost of what had happened the last time he saw her. Ignoring the dark thoughts, he looked away. He couldn't help but jump a bit when Jimmy grabbed his hand, squeezing it tight. The look of discomfort on his twins face was extremely apparent. In fact, everyone in the group looked upset in some way. Gavin looked nervous, and much to Ghost's surprise, Johnny looked a bit angry. His brows were furrowed, and his jaw was clenched. This was a rare sight. It was obvious that they were all seeing different things. Ghost glanced down at the little machine once more. It said that the entity was all around them now. Quickly looking up, he couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. The air around them felt cold, however. Cold but insufferably humid. Ghost could feel his hoodie beginning to cling to his body from the moisture. Almost as though he had been standing in the shower. He wondered what the others were experiencing, knowing that it was probably something very different. He knew this was going to be complex.
