1: Hurting You

Barry smiled at her. There was no obstacle that could keep them apart. The only thing left was each other, and that was a good thing. Whatever would come next, they weren't prepared, but they wouldn't run away.

Never.

(Two years later)

"Oh my..." Kara's breath took away the last word in her whispered exclamation. She quickly started wiping the fresh blood from her hands onto her jeans. She ran her fingers through her hair a few times, trying to calm herself with no effect. On the last stroke she gave that section of hair a fair tug as she took control of herself.

She swallowed her fear and began pulling a body off of the ground and into a six foot deep hole. Quickly, she reached for a shovel and started covering the carcass with dirt. Nearly halfway done, she felt a sudden cool breeze come from behind her. She panicked, dropped the shovel and turned around to face a person with a shadow covering their features. She couldn't figure out who it was, but somehow understood their presence was something to invoke terror. She was going to have to start running

Kara opened her eyes and sucked in a deep breath of air. She was in a laying position underneath a remarkably soft blanket. It took only a second to recognize that this was her house and it was only a dream. Although it wasn't real, she still took a second to refocus her breathing, -and press play on the tv. Netflix had somehow figured out that she was asleep.

She nearly fell back asleep when the Portlandia intro song started playing, but Kara aggressively flinched at the sound of her front slamming shut on the opposite end of the house. She knew if there was an intruder she could have taken them, she was just SO tired.

It had been a long week for Supergirl. She had stopped two robberies, concluded a hostage situation with zero fatalities, and double teamed with the Flash to take down a meta. Not to mention how busy she'd been with her newly updated Marley status. People who she hadn't spoken to in years were now asking her about her week.

One can understand how tired she must have been to have halfway ignored the door and pull the blanket up higher across her chest. She was also a bit chilly. Even though she wasn't attempting to prevent anything, she could feel footsteps getting closer to her. Finally she turned her head, causing her to sit up very quickly.

"Barry," she gasped cheerfully.

Her husband stood now in front of her, tall and lean as ever. His eyes had a constant sparkle in them that could only be truly experienced with seven color cones. The only problem with him was how tired he had been looking lately. The bags under his eyes had grown from carry on to luggage in the past few days, and that was something she just couldn't ignore.

"Sit down," she said with a soft smile, gesturing to the other end of the couch.

Barry half smiled, clearly too exhausted to argue. He sluggishly moved to get there (ironic for the fastest man alive) and fell into the small stack of throw pillows that had been accumulating in that part of the house. Kara stood up so he could properly take up the entire couch with his long limbs. She released her grip on the blanket to cover him up. He was nearly shivering. She kissed him on the forehead as a mother would, and slowly walked to her bed. She would interrogate him later. Tonight, they would sleep.

======

After last night's episode, Kara decided it would be best to make some breakfast for two. After all, it was a Saturday: their unofficial day off. She happily climbed out of bed, being the morning person she was, and tucked her bare toes away in a pair of slippers. They appeared to be a size too big but the large slippers were actually the perfect amount of snugness on account of their extra fluffiness. She gave her robe a glance of thought. She wasn't very cold, but sometimes she felt bad for never using it. It was a very good white elephant gift robe but she just never felt the need to wear it. Once again, she left it untouched, hanging on a hook.

She typically showers in the morning, but she wanted to be up before Barry, so she mentally scheduled that for later in the morning. She naturally woke at 6:30 and hardly two minutes had passed before she was in the kitchen. Barry, on the other hand, was notorious for sleeping in. Night is kind of Central City's villain prime time, whereas Kara usually just has to drop everything in the middle of the day to stop an alien from blowing up her entire city until her coffee break is through.

She popped two pieces of bread in the toaster, not pressing the lever down yet. She got out a sauce pan as quietly as she could as to not wake her sleeping partner, and gently placed it on their stove. Her slender fingers opened the cream colored fridge and unsealed a ziplock bag with ten pieces of pepper edged bacon in it. They evenly spread the four of them that would fit on the saucepan and wiped themselves clean on a nearby towel.

As she took a step in the direction of the fridge it happened. She felt a shooting pain going up and down her left foot and fell to the floor with a thud. She muffled her screams with her hand but seconds later she saw a spark of lightning in front of her.

"What's wrong," he looked her directly in the eyes. "Are you okay?"

Kara was now cradling her useless foot while she wiped at the tear forming in her right eye. "I," she hung her head in shame and agony, "stubbed my toe."

Barry felt relief wash over him. She was kind of okay. Kind of because he of all people knew that you never forget a good toe stubbing. He wasn't exactly known for being the most physically immune kid. "You think you can stand," he inquired with a smirk, but still sympathetically.

"Yeah," her voice trembled a little. She glanced at the toe sized dent she left on the bottom corner of their fridge. Magnets weren't going to cover that up.

Barry held out his hand to assist and she kindly accepted. She shifted her weight to her right foot and slowly gained feeling in her little toe. She needed a pedicure. Had her feet always been this fat?

"What's this," Barry interrupted her thoughts by pointing at the barely sizzling bacon on the stove. "Were you making breakfast?"

She could hear the teasing in his voice so she responded with a simple, "yes, but now it's just for me," and the sticking out of her tongue.

"No, no," he waved his hands about, "I didn't mean to say it like that! In fact I'll help you make it!"

Kara was about to refuse the offer because she thought they were being playful, but cooking for the two hungriest people in the world was anything but effortless. "Alright. You can make pancakes."

He got out a mixing bowl, one of Kara's floral aprons, and glanced around at his surroundings for a moment. "Do we have the mix stuff or..."

"From scratch," she made a face that she normally saves for Halloween. She could almost hear an audience gasping at her words.

He sighed and looked up a recipe.

As Kara was flipping over the seventh piece of bacon to touch the pan, she asked her husband the question that was her baby elephant in the room: "Why were you home so late last night?"

The air was still for a few seconds.

"Um, Cisco and I saw a movie and it was longer than we were expecting," he poured his homemade batter onto a skillet.

She set her tongs down with a slam. "That's a lie."

She was getting unusually angry. Neither of them really enjoyed it when she got angry.

"Okay. You're right," he raised his hands in surrender. "I was catching one last bad guy, which I know you don't like me doing that kind of thing that late, but I incarcerated this guy before, so I kind of looked at him as my responsibility."

She took a deep breath and turned around to face his also turning body. "I don't like it when you lie to me, Barr." Her voice was higher than usual and her face was definitely red. She was crying.

"And I don't like lying to you," he hugged her with the strength of one hundred puppies. "Please don't cry because I was stupid."

"I'm sorry I just- I don't like you lying to me because when- when you lie it it means you don't trust- you don't trust me enough to tell me the truth and I just love you so much and when- and when I get upset with you I cry because I don't ever want to be upset with you, and it hurts me when I am," she stained his apron with tears.

"Oh, I know baby. I can be a stupid, stupid boy sometimes, but to think I would ever do anything to hurt you, hurts me."

She buried her face in his chest. A small, "I'm sorry I hurt you," could be heard.

"Don't be sorry," he chuckled, "I'll survive."

"I think you're the best thing that's ever happened to me.

"I don't have a doubt in my mind that you're the best thing that could have possibly happened to me."

"I think your pancakes are burning."

"What?"

She lifted her face. "Your pancakes are burning."

His eyebrows crinkled, "Is that a euphemism for someth- MY PANCAKES!"

He let go of his wife to see smoke coming off of his beautiful creations. He picked them up with his fingers and placed them on a plate, the uncooked batter on one half of each sealing them into a strange type of sandwich.

"Well, bone atrophy, hon" he sighed.

Kara really didn't want him to beat himself up about it, because she knew he would do that silently, so she peeled on off of another and took a bite. She wasn't too excited about the smell, but the taste wasn't the worst thing in the world.

"It's not bad," she said, her body refusing to swallow. "In fact, I think half burnt pancakes are my new favorite food."

"Stop," he smiled half-heartedly.

"No really, you get the best of the smoky and battery-ness of pancakes."

"Kara, you can stop now," he still didn't display proper emotions.

"Honestly," she said with her mouth still full, " you could slap some sprinkles on this and sell it to children."

"Okay," he giggled. "What do you say we eat up this bacon and just go get ourselves some caffeine?"

"Sounds good. Only I've got to go do something first."

"What's that?"

"Spit this out. It terrible," she shared.

(A/N: Hey, y'all. It's been a while hasn't it? Sorry it took me so long to get this first chapter out, but I'll try to update before three and a half months go by with a new chapter. If you have any ideas about where this story should go or who should be in it, then comment or pm me. Until next time.)
