016 | Jam Session

The sun shined through the large window in the hospital room. Droplets from the night's rain were scattered amongst the clear glass. The water glistened as the sunbeams pierced through its form. The humanoid and android still had their hands interlocked as a figure entered the room. Erika was still asleep as a man came forward and Connor stayed frozen in his spot. The man folded his arms and let out a cough of disapproval. He coughed once more as Erika woke up with pleasant eyes as she was able to sleep soundly for the night.

"Mo-orning Hank", she said as yawned a bit.

"Morning", his eyes made it's way to Erika's hand in Connor's," I've got some good news"

"You've quit drinking?", Erika questioned in a sarcastic tone.

"No...uh-", Hank was stumbled by this statement, but pressed forward and teased her with words she's been wanting to hear," I could just tell the doctor to not discharge you-"

"No wait", Erika said with an outstretched arm as Hank pretended to leave the room," I was just joking--so I can go home?"

"That's what I thought", Hank let out a chuckle as he made his way back to Erika. He told Connor to wait outside once more as he wanted to talk with Erika. Although the android was hesitant for he wanted to make sure she was alright but obeyed his partner's order.

"Hhmmm, so what happened?", Hank questioned his daughter-figure with a raised eyebrow.

"No-nothing happened!", she chirped at the question, but her reaction said otherwise.

"You two didn't-", Hank started, but was abruptly stopped with Erika's words.

"Oh-no...God no", she said with a subtle blush at the thought," we just talked and it was a good talk, then I fell asleep...geez Hank we're just friends"

"Mmhmm", Hank nodded at Erika as he bluntly accepted her answer.

"Okay change of subject, if I'm leaving today so I get a change of clothes?", she asked and Hank nodded by grabbing a duffle bag from the floor and placed by her feet. She smiled widely since she hated these hospital clothes and wanted to be herself again.

"So now my other question", Erika stated as she looked back at Hank," wh-where will I be staying?

"That, kid is a surprise", he said as he stood up and headed out the door," I'll be outside, just tell if you need help"

"Will do", she said as she grabbed the bag at her feet and examined its contents. Her mother packed the clothing since it was neatly organized and contained at least three outfit combinations to suit the day's weather. She looked out the window to grasp what the weather was like but it was hard to determine. Luckily, a staff nurse entered to assist with removing the IV and other medical instruments she was attached to. She thanked the nurse and asked for the weather. Erika nodded at the woman's response and got out of the hospital bed as the nurse left.

She got dressed in a comfy pair of jeans and yellow sweater. Erika grabbed the only pair of tennis shoes and her olive green coat. After cleaning up the bed and folding her hospital garments she walked over to the table with all of her belongings and gifts and stuffed them into a free compartment on the duffle bag--she then grabbed the flowers and headed out the door. For she was not going to miss being in that white box.

As she exited Connor looked up in awe. To see Erika in her normal wear was breathtaking to him. Her hair was little messy but it added to the charm he found intriguing. Hank bumped his partner on the chest with an elbow as he notified Connor of response that was of a human.

"Connor! Close your mouth, you'll catch flies", Hank as he squinted his eyes at the android.

"Sorry lieutenant I was processing some data", Connor stated the truth in an analytical way.

"Well don't do it again, people will stare and think you're wired", Hank commented

"But I am, we androids have nano-electrical wiring that acts as nerves, much similar to humans", Connor replied with an informative look as he did not understand the reference Hank mentioned.

"You know what-", Hank turned to Erika and grabbed her bag to relieve her of the minimal weight she was going to carry and then faced Connor," nevermind"

Erika walked beside Hank as the three of them made their way to the elevator. Once inside the compartment, Erika shot questions at Hank with a few directed at Connor.

"So where are we going?", she leaned towards Hank as he held his arms close to his chest in a crossed manner.

"I already said it's a surprise", he replied.

"Fine, so when did you two become partners?", she asked the two detectives.

"It was approximately a month and two and a half weeks before today", Connor asked for the both of them.

"What he said", Hank looked at the two as they interacted I'm such a way that Hank knew what was to come.

"Hhmmm, Hank maybe I could make you a cup of coffee again with one of my famous cinnamon rolls?", She stated at the daily routine she and Hank had on mornings before he would head off to work. Her cafe was only a ten to fifteen-minute drive from the station and it made him less cranky.

"You need to rest first kid", he said as the elevator opened up and the three occupants exited and headed for the old vehicle parked up front.

Erika entered the passenger side as Hank did on the driver's side. Connor was left to sit in the back of the vehicle and positioned himself on the seat behind Hank. This gave him access to view Erika from an angle.

The engine roared as Hank ignited the gas. He drove his vehicle out of the driveway and to the streets. Erika smiled as it reminded her of the road trips she would take with the dogs, her mom, Hank, and Cole. She frowned at the thought of the young boy and wondered how Hank was coping. She looked at him and brought her hand to the radio. She rummaged through the glove compartment to find an old tape that she would always leave in Hank's car and inserted it to the cassette opening. Connor's eyes narrowed in on the handwritten title on a strip of tape.

"Ride Vibes"

The first song started with a couple drum hits, followed by a guitar and a hint of a string instrument in the background. Erika tapped her hands on the glove compartment and sang the intro chant. She bobbed her head to beat and punched Hank on the shoulder lightly. He let out a smile and continued to drive to their destination. She rocked out to when the drum solo came to an end and an elongated guitar strum started as the car made at a stop. As the light was still red Hank gave in and spoke the words to the break in the song before the light turned green. The two reconnected through the song and Connor couldn't help but smile at the sight for he never seen Hank so full of energy and exhibited happiness. As the car ride lasted for another ten minutes they made it to the location.

Before them, was a corner cafe with what appeared to be an apartment located on top.

Erika smiled brightly at the place as the sun shined through the sky giving a warm glow to the establishment. Her eyes beamed at Hank as he nodded his head and handed her a set of keys.

"Welcome home kid", he said as she exited the vehicle and dragged the two detectives to the front doors.
