A spark of hope

On a peaceful night, Ikiara lay on her bed, snoring quietly with her eyes closed. Out of nowhere, she sensed something. Flickers of a violet flame accompanied a raging scream that shook her mind, and for a split second, she saw an image, a vision of a familiar face.

Her brother. Full of rage, screaming with a hellbent expression full of purple cinders around him.

She woke up abruptly, a loud gasp escaping her mouth. Her face was covered in sweat, and her breath was ragged. She placed her hand on her chest, trying to calm herself from the overstimulation to her senses.

"Ikiara!" the door was slammed open to reveal Luridad. She ran to the bed in worry, "what happened? Are you okay?"

"I...I think I saw him..." Ikiara whispered.

"Him?" she furred her face in confusion.

"My brother... he was... furious." She looked at her hand. "But... he's alive! He's alive, Luridad! He's somewhere out there!" she smiled widely, hugging her neck with tears streaming out of her eyes from both relief and happiness.

The hug initially took Luridad aback; she hadn't seen her getting so emotional since the day she arrived, but she returned the hug regardless and patted her head tenderly. "I'm glad..." she let go of the embrace and placed her hands on her face. You are going to find him, right?"

Ikiara sniffed. She wiped the tears from her eyes and nodded. "Right!"

They looked at each other warmly, their eyes reflecting affection as their hands landed on each other. A couple of seconds of staring later, they snapped out of their mutual trance and glanced away with a dark blush covering their cheeks. Luridad cleared her throat. "Anyhow... you should get back to sleep. We have to continue our training tomorrow."

"y...yeah..." Ikiara leaned back into her bed. "Sorry for waking you up Luridad... and thank you."

She gave her one more devoted smile, "Sweet dreams, fallen angel." She kissed her hand and stood up to leave the room.

The next day.

Ikiara and Luridad sat in the living room after having breakfast. The monochromatic girl placed a couple of books on the table. "Okay, why don't you tell me what you saw last night?"

"Well... it was my brother." Ikiara rubbed her chin in, though. "He was screaming... in pure rage... I never saw him like this back home... But I know it was him. I could feel it." She placed her hand on her chest.

"I see..." she mumbled and opened a book, scrolling through the pages until she reached a particular one. "let's see..." she moved her finger along the page. "There it is!"

The purple-eyed girl turned her head to the page. "Clairvoyance?"

"Yep!" she nodded. "It's the magic of acquiring information, such as sensing an event that's happened in a distant place due to a mystical extrasensory perception." She tapped the picture of a person with an eye on their forehead.

"I'm... I'm not going to get a third eye, right?" she rubbed her head awkwardly.

She giggled a bit, covering her mouth and shaking her head. "Oh, fallen angel, no. You will not get an extra eye." She placed her hands down. "It's only figurative. You had a vision. A small snip of prophecy that is shown through a connection."

"Oh... I suppose that makes sense." Ikiara tilted her head. "But why it happened so suddenly."

"It may have been related to the state you saw him in. You mentioned purple flames, correct?" She hummed a little as she looked down at the book.

"Yes, to be honest, it scared me a little." She looked at her hands, holding them tightly together.

"Maybe that part wasn't metaphorical. It could have been a literal vision. The flames you saw may have been his aura." Luridad reasoned as she moved to a different book, searching through its pages intently.

"But, didn't you say that to feel his aura, he would need to be unreasonably high for that to work?" She rubbed her hair.

"Indeed, I did." She stopped swaying the pages and glanced back at her, "which means your brother somehow produced that unrealistic amount of power. Even if it was for a moment."

"What could have possibly caused him to do something like that?" Ikiara questioned herself anxiously, twirling her hair around her fingers. The idea of her brother getting into a dangerous situation made her nerves rack up.

"That is something I would like to know," She mumbled lightly while rubbing her head and thinking about the situation. She noticed the distress in Ikiara's mannerisms, so she let out a small breath and brought her hands to hers carefully. "Let's not worry about that right now. If you were able to feel that signal, it means he is still alive." She smiled at her reassuringly. "Plus, it confirms what I've been saying! You're a natural!"

Ikiara gazed back down at their hands. She fleetingly focused on them and took a deep breath. She opened her eyes and let her nerves relax. "What do you mean by a natural?"

She let go of her hands and then clapped her own. "Okay! Remember when I told you the spell to find your siblings was very high level?"

"Yeah," she nodded.

"You see, the vision you had is not something mages can just do on a whim." She snapped her fingers. "It takes years of training for the common mage to make a successful clairvoyant vision." She then raised her finger. "But there are some people, some special cases, that get one of these in their dreams. Just like you did."

"Woah..." she moved her glance from her hands to her. "Are you... one of those people too?"

"I don't like bragging." She placed her hands on her lap. "But yes, I had a clairvoyant dream, too. It happened when I was younger."

"What was it about?" She leaned forward in interest. "Who... who did you dream about?"

She meets her stare on hers again, hesitating on her words until she forms a steady sentence. "I saw my mother... after she passed."

"Oh," Ikiara covered her mouth and leaned back. "Oh god, I'm so sorry, I... I had no idea; I shouldn't have asked."

Luridad cut her off, raising her hand. A small laugh escaped her mouth as she shook her head. "It's fine, Ikiara. I know you didn't have bad intentions; besides, there was no way for you to know."

"I guess," she huffed and turned her head down while holding her wrist. "Still, I feel like I should have been more cautious about it."

"How about we continue your lessons and forget about it?" she suggested and changed the second book's pages. "Special or not, you have a long way to go before you can turn those visions into a link to contact your brother, let alone see him again."

She nodded in response. "Okay..." she took a small breath and perked up. "What is today's lesson?" she crossed her legs and moved her arms down.

"Good question," Luridad tapped her chin while looking back up at the ceiling. Well, you have a very good grasp on elemental magic so far, so I think we can move from that spot for now." She passed the pages without looking at them, humming absentmindedly as she tilted her head from side to side.

"Umm... "Ikiara raised an eyebrow in confusion as she watched her. She waited for her to do something, unsure if she should interrupt her to break her out of the trance or if she should just let her do her thing. After a couple of seconds passed, she tried to reach her hand over to her.

"I know!" she placed her hand down, slamming her finger into the page, causing the purple-eyed female to jump back with a startled yelp. "Oh, sorry about that. I guess I spaced out from thinking," she chuckled, "haven't done that one in years."

Ikiara showed a sweet, dropping expression.

"Spacing out, not thinking," she clarified.

"I knew that," Ikiara mumbled. 'I was about to say it, thank god.' She shook her head to get the thought off her mind. "Either way. That means you wound today's lesson?"

"Exactly!" she cheered and twirled her finger around. A small group of sparkles surrounded the book and lifted for her. "Levitation and telekinesis spells. They are a bit more advanced than elemental magic, but it shouldn't be far from your level."

"that's... very interesting." Ikiara took the book and started to read the instructions. "Locate the object and visualize a coat of magic covering, then connect it to your hand, embed it in magic, and move the object."

"Sometimes the book can be a bit too literal about things." Luridad sat down beside her, "I like to imagine a hand lifting the things I move," she added.

"Are you sure about that?" she glanced at her, a little skeptical about her method.

"It doesn't hurt to try!" she smiled happily and pumped her fists.

"If you say so." She looked at the couch in front of them and stared intently at one of the pillows. She extended her hand and attempted to imagine a hand lifting it. As she surrounded her palm with magic, her focus flickered between it and the pillow. Suddenly, it shoots up to the roof and explodes in feathers, making both girls yelp and jump back.

"What happened!?" Yugikari stepped into the living room and looked around frantically and alertly.

"Nothing, Father!" Luridad quickly waved her hands. "We just had... a little mishap while practicing, that's all."

The older man looked down at them and sighed. "Very well then." He walked into the living room and spun his finger. "contraria agree," he mumbled, making the pillow reform itself. He sat and placed his hands on his lap. "Tell me what happened, precisely."

"w...well," Ikiara rubbed her arm in embarrassment. "I was trying to do a telekinesis spell... and the pillow just exploded... I swear it wasn't my intention, sir." She lowered her head.

"Hmmm." He crossed his arms. "How exactly did you perform the spell?"

"I did exactly as Luridad told me," She mumbled.

"It is true, Father," Luridad added, "I don't know what could have gone wrong."

"I believe I know the problem." He placed his hand on his daughter's head. "Sweetie, you have a delightfully peculiar way of seeing magic. But that is your way. It may not be as effective for Ikiara." he turned his attention to the purple-eyed girl. "Why don't you try again? This time, do it the way you've done for the other spells."

Ikiara blinked momentarily. After that, she looked down at the book. "I'll try." She closed her eyes and placed her hand on top of it intently. She opened her eyes and looked at another of the pillows. She extended her hand and let out a small breath, mimicking the movements she saw on the books. She imagined a coat of magic enveloping the pillow. She followed that up by connecting it to her hand as she embedded it in magic. A couple of seconds passed in silence until the object was lifted from the couch.

Luridad gasped as she watched the pillow float in the air. "You did it!"

Yugikari smiled and nodded, clapping his hand. "Very good."

"Oh..." She looked a little surprised as she dropped the pillow. "Thank you, sir." She smiled a bit more with her hands on her lap.

"Father, how do you know that'd work?" Luridad asked as she looked up at him.

"I recall you telling me about your lessons in the library." he sat on the couch and brought the book to himself. "It appears to me that Ikiara is the kind of person who learns by the books, so your dynamic methods are not going to be as effective for her."

"Oh..." Luridad rubbed her head. "I somehow missed that."

"It's Okay; I wasn't aware that was my thing either," Ikiara looked down at the other books.

After that, Yugikari smiled and handed her the other books, "Well, learning isn't set in stone. Everyone has their view of the world. That's what makes magic so wonderful."

"I suppose so..." She looked down at the books and passed her hand across the pages. "Still... how long until I can actually see my brothers..."

"I don't know, Ikiara, I mean. Feeling a presence on another planet is one thing. But connecting to it is on a whole other level." Luridad explained.

Her father nodded in agreement. "Starting on the principles is very important, too. We can't just jump on the big stuff without the bases."

"I know... but what if they ended up in a dangerous place?" she looked at them anxiously, holding her arms and biting her lip. "What if they need help... I have no idea what kind of places they could have gone...."

"Hey..." Luridad walked to her and placed her hand on her shoulder. "If they are anything as amazing as you, I am sure they are doing fine." She smiled at her reassuringly.

Ikiara blushed slightly at her words. She smiled lightheartedly and brushed one of her locks behind her face. "Thanks... maybe you're right." She took a small breath to collect herself. "But that doesn't mean I'm just going to stand here. I need to keep learning so I can see them."

"That's the spirit," Yugikari said, smiling and standing up. I will leave you to it; if you need anything, tell me." He bowed his head, and Luridad returned the gesture with her hands on her lap. Ikiara followed suit shortly after. He then walked outside of the living room, leaving the girls to their own devices.

Ikiara sat back up and looked at her. "All right... what now?"

"Well, you learned the basics of levitation magic, so how about you try to get a bit more versed in it." She suggested passing the page on to the previous book. "You know, like levitating multiple objects at the same time or levitating yourself."

"Got it. I'll give it my best shot." She looked at the pages attentively. Her eyes darted around the instructions. She crossed her legs and placed her hands on her knees, trying to sense the surrounding objects and mimicking her actions from before. She visualized mantles of magic enveloping them and connecting that essence on her hands.

As she felt a small amount of pressure on her shoulders, she raised her hands shakily; the books, pillows, and even the table began to float up unsteadily. Her black hair flowed up slightly as she kept her eyes set on her fingertips. She gritted her teeth slightly as her hands trembled. Soon enough, the objects fell, as well as her hair, while she gasped out for air.

"Are you okay?" Luridad leaned towards her in worry.

"Yeah... Yeah, I'm fine..." She responded between pants. "I just... didn't expect that to take a toll on me." She held her head. "I think I'm having a seizure..."

She giggled nervously. "Yeah... that happens a lot with magic overuse..." she held her hand and helped her stand up. "Let's go get you some water." She guided her to the kitchen.

"Good idea..." Ikiara stumbled a bit, holding her hand tightly for support.

Later that afternoon.

Ikiara took a deep breath as she sat in her room; the overuse of magic made her have to stay in bed for a few hours. However, that didn't stop her from remembering the vision she had the last night. She tightened her grip on the sheets while furrowing her expression.

"I can do this... I can do it." She whispered and closed her eyes. She set her entire attention on that memory, mixing it with the few remembrances of her home she could muster. As if chasing a firefly in the black of night, she searched her headspace for some connection that could give her a signal, a flash, anything.

Kolissíao

Outside of a cave, a young boy sat on his knees in front of 4 rock piles arranged next to each other as a symbol of something lost. His black wild hair moved along with the wind as his hands rested on his lap. His eyes held a somber look as he gritted his teeth to prevent himself from exploding.

From the cavern's entrance, a couple looked at him with worry and trepidation. "Alfan, you should talk to him..." The blonde woman looked up at her husband.

"I... I don't think he wants to talk, Katherine," he sighed, "After what he went through, I think he needs this moment."

As he stared at the ground, he felt a sting at the back of his mind. A sudden stimulus brought a frame of his home. He shoots up with wide eyes.

"... Sister?"
