Ice Cream
This is going to be fun.
You're going to say something stupid.
This is going to be great.
What if she asks me something I'm not expecting?
I'm riding the bus to the ice cream shop. The shaky contraption jerks its riders left and right without hesitation, a chaotic tumble through the narrow streets of this island. We screech to a stop at a place called Hamilton Parish. I stumble down the steps and onto the sidewalk, dizzy from the ride. When I regain my composure, I see the sign for Bailey's and the butterflyfish swarm my stomach.
The shop is cute, with a glass counter and a little room set off for seating. A billion flavors are listed on a chalkboard hanging above my head. What in Triton's name is vanilla? Death by Chocolate? That's not very nice.
Cheesecake was always one of my favorite things to eat when I was younger, so I get a blueberry cheesecake-flavored ice cream and head to the seating area.
She's sitting in the corner, and I almost drop my ice cream because I had forgotten just how pretty she is.
"Hi," I say, setting down my ice cream and sitting across from her.
"Hey there! How are you?" she says, smiling at me.
"I'm good! Excited that we could hang out," I say. No! That was a stupid thing to say! My brain snaps at me. "And you?"
"I'm excited that we could do this too! I really needed someone to get my mind off..." her smile briefly disappears, but then she looks back at me and starts giggling.
I grin and eat my ice cream. Holy heck, it's good. It's cold and sweet, and it tastes exactly like cheesecake.
"So how long have you been living here for?" Lexi asks me.
"Just a couple days," I say. "I just got legs the day you met me." Wait. What?
"Oh, yeah," she says. "I was afraid of traveling too, until just a few months ago."
We both laugh, and I feel like I narrowly avoided her finding out the truth about me. But she wouldn't have believed it.
"Hey," she says, thinking. "Would you maybe want to walk around after this? Since you just got here, I could...you know, show you around."
At this, I try not to seem too thrilled. But I am. I feel like jumping up and down and saying, yes! Yes! Yes!
"Yeah! Totally! That sounds great," I say, to which she grins.
Today's going to be a good day.
