Chapter 4 like nothing ever happened
That evening, Aiden and I played card games and told some stories. Well, we were told some funny stories by mam. We had heard them so many times that we could basically recite them off by heart. It was just nice to be able to talk with her and Aiden, together again.
Aiden hadn't been gone long, on his trip I mean, yet it seemed like it had been ages since I had seen him. University was his main priority at the moment and I couldn't blame him for that. University was the key to him getting to where he wanted to be in life, he wasn't going to let anything stop him. That worried me.
I knew from the moment dad started to talk about cutting down trees that Aiden would have an issue with it. There was room for a lot of argument last night which never happened. I didn't know what worried me more, the arguments which could have happened or the fact that it didn't. Aiden had stayed over, yet he was gone before I woke up in the morning.
"Could've said goodbye." I muttered as I sat up and stretched with a huff. It was another day at school. My morning was the same as it was yesterday. I got up, got ready, had breakfast and headed out the door. I double checked to make sure that it was locked, I'm sure dad would come back before the doctor came. At least I hoped so.
The trip to school was boring and drawn out, how I usually liked it. However, there was something eating away at me today and I couldn't figure out what it was. I reached the school gate rather early and waited for Emi. I looked around at the street to see if anything was out of place. The bus stop had it's glass knocked out, again. Then there was a bin which had been moved, again. Nothing seemed wrong.
"How low can you go?" Emi greeted me with a smirk. Her voice startled me, which she seemed to get a kick out of. "Why so jumpy?" She chuckled, there was still a little bit of concern in her expression. I wasn't usually the jumpy or anxious kind of person. It meant something was really wrong if I was acting anything like I was acting now. "Did something happen?"
It wasn't a prying question, she had every right to ask it. Somehow I felt like I shouldn't tell her what happened. "Yeah, I'm fine." I shook my head as we walked towards the doors. "Aiden came home last night. Dad told him something and honestly I'm not going to hear the end of it." She gave an annoyed groan.
"When can I meet your father? I'll give him a piece of my mind." She held up her fists playfully. That sentence was one of the reasons I didn't want them to meet. I knew full-well that she wouldn't hesitate. "Though I didn't think your brother would be back this early. You said he'd be gone for at least a week." She pointed to me as though I was her evidence.
"Nor did I." I nodded as we waited outside our tutor room. "He decided to cut it short for some reason. Think he got too scared." I gave a slight laugh as I leant on the wall. I must have been convincing as she threw her head back and laughed with me. It was a regular tutor. That then led to another boring and unusual day. That was until lunchtime.
I sat, picking at some so-called mashed potatoes with a slight frown on my face as I looked around. Emi was late, she was never late unless she had gotten into trouble. Even then, she would find some way to tell me. Often this came in the form of getting a classmate of hers to tell me. It was getting worrying when it was nearly time to head outside.
I hung back a little bit, I debated on going to ask reception if she had gone home but thought better of it. If she hadn't gone home then I wouldn't want to get her into trouble. I slowly rose from my seat and started to head outside. There wasnt' really much to do there. So I went to our usual spot and tried to make something witht he grass.
It was nearly time for lunch to be over. With each moment I got more and more worried, it's stupid I know. I couldn't help but feel slightly panicked for her, she was my only friend here. I was deep in these thoughts when someone plonked themselves down beside me. I jumped in surprise but looked up to see a head of familiar brown hair. "Why you lookin so low?" She said with a grin on her face.
"Emi!" I exclaimed and punched her in the shoulder. "I was worried about you, where've you been? You missed the entirety of lunch." I continued to fret over her. I know she could take care of herself and that I shouldn't be too worried. Though my mind had it's time to wonder.
"Awe, you were worried about me?" She teashed lightly with a hand on her heart. "Well, I was in the girl's toilets. My parents called me." She rolled her eyes in annoyance. It wouldn't have been the first time that her parents called her at school, she never got away with actually answering them. "As soon as lunch started. So I just hid in there."
"Again?" I joined in the annoyance, it had gotten her into trouble many times. "They really don't understand school." I muttered quietly. I know that Emi's parents were homeschooled for their entire school career. It must be odd for them to have a child in the school system. Surely they would have done a little bit of research beforehand. The fact that phones were prohibited was something we all remembered.
"Yeah I'll have to remind them." She trailed off slightly and sighed. I could tell that her sentence wasn't actually genuine, it confused me greatly but I shrugged it off. "Anyway, we have one of our favourite classes next. So let's not be sad now." Her constant enthusiasm was rather difficult to get used to. But it put a smile on my face and made a chuckle escape my lips. Next was our favourite class.
