Chapter 21 - Doubt

"Babe, I've got a question." Morgan sighed.

"Hm?" Fleur put Marie's food in a bowl.

"What do I do if the cat gets out?" Morgan asked.

"I live on the third floor of an apartment. She's not getting out." Fleur hummed.

"What if she sneaks past me when I open the door?"

"You always check the door to make sure." Fleur nodded, putting the bowl down on the floor.

"She's a fast one." Morgan pointed.

"And so are you." Fleur pointed back.

Morgan nodded slowly, taking her hand,"You got me there."

Fleur looked at him,"You build, don't you?"

"I fix up houses in my free time."

"Maybe you could build her a little house on the patio." Fleur suggested.

"Why didn't I think of that?" Morgan blinked.

"It will be parfaite!" Fleur clapped.

Morgan kissed her cheek,"It's cute. Y'know, when you get all excited like this."

"Shut up." Fleur turned to him.

"Not a chance, babygirl." Morgan chuckled.

"Marie will be your best friend if you make her that home."

"And I'll get to it." He hummed.

"Good. Now I'm going for a shower, don't bother me." She pointed.

"I'll try not to." Morgan sighed.

"Be good, Marie. Bonsoir." Fleur waved and ran off.

"Looks like it's just me and you now, Marie." Morgan looked down at her.

Marie purred before running off after Fleur.

"Aw, come on." Morgan sighed,"I'm gonna build you a house."

Marie let out a chirp but she still never came back.

Elijah was laid face down, sprawled out on the bed. Muffin was laid on top of Elijah, on his back.

"So I was reading- Oh my god!" Reid gasped.

"Hm?" Elijah blinked, lifting his head.

"Oh- You're not dead." Reid let out a sigh of relief.

"Of course I'm not dead." Elijah sighed,"Despite my mother's wishes."

"Your mother can die." Reid muttered.

"What was that darling?" Elijah looked over at him.

"Nothing." Reid hummed.

"Come on, talk to me." Elijah patted the bed beside him.

"You're sleepy, it's fine." Reid assured him.

"No, I sleep better when you're here." Elijah told him,"I like listening to you."

"I ramble so you have to listen to me." Reid sat down.

"Please, Spencer?" Elijah draped one of his arms over Reid.

"I said... Your mother can die."

"Trust me, I've said the same thing before." Elijah assured him, moving closer to Reid.

"I don't wish death upon anyone but that woman is an exception." Reid nodded.

Elijah smiled, again moving closer so he was almost at Reid's shoulder.

"Want me to lean down? Make it easier?"

"Yes please."

Reid hummed and leaned down slightly. Elijah kissed Reid's cheek before leaning against his shoulder.

"Do you think I'll ever meet your mom?"

"I don't want you to." Elijah tightened his grip on Reid.

"Neither do I, don't worry." Reid assured him.

"I don't want her to hurt you too.." Elijah mumbled.

"I wouldn't let her."

Elijah looked down,"I know.."

"And I wouldn't let her hurt you either."

Elijah looked up at Reid, still holding onto him. Talking about Stacy... It brought back some bad memories.

"I'm never going to let her harm you again." Reid assured him, squeezing his hand.

"I love you, Reid." Elijah squeezed his hand, closing his eyes.

"I love you too." Reid smiled.

Elijah tried to forget the mention of his mother and get some sleep.

"I've got men at every exit point on campus." The officer told them as they arrived on scene.

"She had her mace out, but she didn't use it? And it's well lit. He's not afraid of being seen." JJ sighed.

"How often do the shuttles run?" Morgan asked.

"Every ten minutes." He answered.

"Were all the other victims posed like this? With their arms crossed?" JJ knelt down.

"Yeah, why?" Griffith, the cop asked.

"It's a classic sign of remorse." Morgan told him,"The Unsub kills the victim and then immediately feels bad about it, so he poses them like this so they can rest in piece."

"You can tell that just by the arms?" Griffth blinked.

"That's why you called us here. To build a psychological profile of your killer." Fleur nodded.

"How long will it take your men to clear the scene?" Gideon walked up.

"A few hours." Griffith nodded to him.

"We're lucky there's a curfew, otherwise, it'd be a mob scene." JJ sighed.

"Have Hotch set up at the precinct, we'll run everything through him." Gideon pounted, "By the time this campus wakes up, I want a handle on this."

*********************************

All the girls gathered into the main room of the sorority hall, in their pyjamas and holding cups of tea.

"They're all so young.." Elijah sighed.

"Hopefully we can stop any more murders." Reid nodded.

Elijah nodded, leaning against him as JJ stepped forward.

"I spoke to Amy's parents. Funeral services will be held on Sunday in Chicago. They're arrivinglater today to bring her home.." She told the girls,"They asked me to let you know that they will be staying downtown at the Main Line Hotel. If any of you would like to visit or pay your respects, they'd like you to feel free to do so."

"How did you all let this happen?" A girl asked, gaining a few looks so she spoke again,"What? Everybody is thinking it. You are the FBI. The campus is crawling with police and she gets murdered waiting for the security shuttle."

"That's not helpful, Katie." The monitor sighed.

"Actually, it is. The fact that your friend was killed in such a well-lit area with a police presence indicates that the killer is most likely part of this campus. He's not an outsider. He's someone who wouldn't raise alarm with police or potential victims." Reid explained.

"You should also be aware that the three victims were brunette." Elijah added,"At this point, we do consider this an intentional pattern."

*********************************

"Did the other victims have this much overkill?" Fleur asked.

"Death was caused by a single, very forceful, stab to the heart." The coroner told her.

"Yeah, he broke through the breastbone." Emily took pictures of the body.

"And after that, he just lashed out at random." He sighed.

"Well, no defensive wounds. She didn't even hold her hands up to fight him off." Fleur held up the victim's hands.

"The first two victims were the same."

"Did you run toxicology screens?" Emily asked.

"None of the others were drugged." The coroner told them,"Considering she was standing, waiting for a shuttle, my guess is, she wasn't either."

*********************************

Back at the sorority house, the three agents walked over to the girls from before.

"I'm sorry about before." Katie sighed.

"I'm sorry about your friend." JJ told her.

"Your RA told us that you guys were at the library last night. Did you see Amy there?" Reid asked.

"We didn't go with her, but we saw her there." The other girl nodded, the one in green,"I thought she left before us."

"Her bag wasn't at her cubicle, or else we would have waited." Katie nodded.

"Did you notice anyone she might've been talking to earlier?" Elijah asked,"Was it.. Like her to be walking alone, even in a dangerous situation like this?"

"She wasn't the victim type." Katie shook her head.

"Ah, it's almost impossible to pinpoint who would be the most vulnerable. That's why we're trying to teach you how to best protect yourselves." Reid explained.

"I just mean that she was strong, and she was smart. I don't know why she didn't at least mace him."

"Are a lot of girls carrying mace?" JJ asked.

"Pepper spray, Mace, switchblades. If you can buy it online or find it at the Army Navy store, we've all bought it." She listed.

"Are you sure about who he's killing? Brunettes?" The girl in green turned to Elijah.

"Pretty sure, yeah." Elijah nodded slowly.

*********************************

As Fleur and Emily were leaving the medical examiners office, Emily's phone began ringing.

"Who's that?" Fleur turned.

Emily sighed,"Just- My mom. Give me a second."

"Okay." Fleur nodded slowly, walking back to the car.

Emily turned, answering the phone. After the phone call was done, Emily got into the car.

"Your mom okay?" Fleur asked.

"Yeah- It was weird. She never calls to just 'check up' on cases." Emily shook her head.

Fleur nodded,"We better go meet with the others."

"We'll tell them what we know, see if they found anything out." Emily agreed.

*********************************

"We know everyone's tired, working overtime. I want to tell you how much we appreciate it." Gideon clasped his hands.

"We'd like to give you a rough profile of the man we're all looking for. This is someone with access. He's managed to move in a small community with high police presence without raising suspicion." Hotch began.

"Which means there's a good chance that this is someone you've seen." Emily nodded.

"Ths Unsub has killed three women in four days, that's what we call a spree killing." Morgan told them,"Now, most likely, something has happened in the past few days to set him off."

"Because he kills white, brunette women that stressor probably has something to do with a woman in his life who fits the same description. A wife, mother, girlfriend. The women he's killing they're most likely a substitute." Gideon explained.

"What we need you to do is look at people who are a part of the campus fabric, see if anyone fits the bill." Elijah crossed his arms,"Students, students, support staff-"

"I'm sorry, but how are my men supposed to know about Somebody's home life?" Griffth asked.

"Well, the people around him have seen him devolving. If you suspect anyone on campus, talk to anyone who knows him." Hotch explained,"Ask if he's recently found religion, been drinking, even if he's been harming himself."

"He may feel emasculated. Considering the stressor and the victimology, there's a good chance that rejection is a recurring theme in his life." Fleue leaned back.

"This Unsub displays a great amount of anger. He stabs his victims repeatedly, even after they're dead." Gideon sighed,"Seconds later, he feels remorse. It's possible that his guilt is because his victims were in a position to trust him."

"How's that?" A reporter asked.

"As we said, we think he's part of campus life. The victims, they feel safe around him. He's able to get close." Morgan shook his head.

"He's also able to kill these women without them fighting back. Not one of them has defensive wounds on their hands." Emily pointed.

"Like if they'd been Tasered first." The reporter nodded.

"That's possible. Why?" Hotch raised a brow.

"Security guards on campus aren't allowed guns. They carry Tasers." Griffith sighed.

"Can you get me an employment list for campus security?" Gideon pointed while Fleur ran to the printer.

Griffith nodded as Gideon followed Fleur to the printer.

"What is it?"

"These markings could have easily come from a Taser." Fleur held a taser up to the picture of the markings.

"Employment list, campus security." Griffith walked in with a list,"How are we going to narrow this down?"

"This Unsub chose a closed community on purpose. He'd want to inject himself into the investigation. Can you check your records? Find out if any of these security guards responded to every crime scene." Gideon instructed.

"You got it." Griffith nodded as he walked off.

"In the meantime, call Garcia. Have her check the list against criminal records." Gideon left the room while Fleur called Garcia.

"Talk to me, girlfriend." Garcia hummed.

"I need to give you a list of security guards." Fleur sighed and began naming all of them.

"I've got nothing." Garcia shook her head.

"Nothing?" Fleur sat down.

"Nada, your security guards are all clean. Squeaky. No criminal records." Garcia told her.

"What about a recent rejection? Something set him off. Did any of these guys get fired recently? Or did their wife leave?" Fleur tried.

"I'm sorry, Fleur. That is far too general, even for my powers of snooping." Garcia sighed.

"Okay, okay. Uh... You're a security guard."

"I'm not sure I like where this is going." Garcia blinked.

"You probably had higher ambitions."

"Easy."

"Could you crosscheck these guys against police and military records? See if any of them got kicked out or rejected."

Garcia typed,"I've got one, but it's not recent."

"Give it to me anyway." Fleur nodded.

"Nathan Tubbs, rejected from the police academy, 2003. He failed his psych eval." Garcia told her.

"I've got a list of responders. Only four guards were at every scene." Griffth walked in, handing her the list before leaving.

"Nathan Tubbs. Garcia, what else can you give me on Tubbs?"

"I've got a court appearance, six days ago. It looks like the judge gave his wife full custody of their daughter. No visitation rights." Garcia informed her.

"How much do you want to bet his ex-wife is a brunette? You are the best." Fleur hummed.

"Word." Garcia smiled as she hung up.

"We've got a possible." Fleur walked out to the others.

*********************************

"You know, I wouldn't mind having some actual physical evidence." Elijah sighed as sat down some bagged evidence.

"Do we have anything?" JJ asked.

"The knife Tubbs had on him was inconclusive, the Taser didn't have any prints on it so I can guarantee were not getting a DNA match either." Elijah sighed, taking a sip of coffee.

"I'll stop by the security offices. If Tubbs kept any trophies linking himself to the crimes, he might have kept them in his locker." Reid suggested as he began walking off.

"I'll come with you." Emily turned.

"Let Reid do it. Go to the hotel, check in. They're not going to hold our rooms forever. We'll go in shifts." Morgan told her.

"I'll sleep when he confesses." Emily shook her head.

"We all will." JJ nodded.

*********************************

"Everyone is so much younger than I remember being." JJ chuckled.

"Yeah, it's a weird age." Emily smiled,"You want to be treated like an adult, but you're still used to someone solving your problems for you."

"All I remember is trying to figure out who I was." Fleur sighed.

"Oh, true that." Elijah shook his head.

"You move around enough, you get used to being whoever people want you to be." Emily nodded.

"What was high school and college like for you guys?" Reid asked Fleur and Elijah.

"Well, it an experience." Elijah nodded slowly.

"Do tell." JJ nudged him.

"High school. Being one of the only open students was not fun, moving on." Elijah shook his head,"College. College was different."

"How different?"

"Well, I didn't really have many friends in high school. I was quieter. But in college? I was friends with so many people."

"Friends, huh?" Fleur hummed.

"Look, just because I went to a bunch of parties does not mean I slept with all those men." Elijah pointed.

"Not all of them."

Elijah rolled his eyes,"I may have went a little off the rails but then I got Muffin. He fixed all my problems."

"He's an emotional support cat." Reid agreed.

"He really is." Elijah sighed.

"What about your high school experience?" JJ looked over at Fleur.

"..I never went to high school." Fleur shrugged.

"What did you do instead? Homeschool?" Emily raised a brow.

"Yeah." Fleur nodded,"Homeschool... Tutored. That kinda thing." Fleur nodded,"I went to college though."

"And?" Elijah asked.

"I was popular." She shrugged,"Made friends easily."

"You are the type." Elijah nodded slowly,"Popular girls definitely gravitated towards you."

"I wasn't mean like them." Fleur pointed,"I got dragged along with them and... I didn't have anyone else."

"Don't worry, we believe you." Emily assured her.

"Besides, college was better than homeschooling." Fleur hummed.

"Always is." JJ nodded.

"Guys." Reid nudged them, pointing forward.

The two girls from before ran up to them all.

"Hey, there's a rumor going around that you caught the guy. Is that true?"

"We have someone in custody." Elijah nodded.

"Oh! Thank you!" The girl hugged him.

Elijah was taken aback slightly but he did hug her back.

*********************************

"Griffth, we got to get this barrier pushed back. We're getting pressed." Morgan ordered.

"Yeah, Joe, give me ten more feet on the tape, yeah?" Griffith pointed.

"I thought you had someone in custody." The Dean walked up.

"We do." Griffith sighed.

"Ma'am, can you help Agent Jareau and I with the students?" Elijah turned to her.

"How?" The Dean asked.

"Tell them that we understand they're upset, but we need room to do our job." JJ told her.

"Yeah." The Dean nodded and walked off with them.

"I guess we can release Tubbs after all." Griffith shrugged.

"Well, I think that would be a mistake." Gideon sighed.

"What are you talking about?"

"I don't think it was the same killer." He shook his head.

"You've gotta be kidding me." Griffith sighed.

"She was blunt force trauma to the head. She was knocked out not Tasered." Fleur shook her head.

"She's a brunette stabbed to death on this campus." Griffith pointed.

"These stab wounds are shallow. They're hesitation marks. Wheoever killed her either wasn't sure they wanted to be killing, or they never tried it before." Reid explained.

"There are no defensive wounds, just like the other victims."

"That's not surprising, considering the head wound." Fleur stood up.

"Excuse me, sir." A young officer walked over.

"What?" Griffith turned to him.

"This was dropped off at the precinct. There were no prints on it." The officer handed him a note before walking off.

"He's innocent, I'm still out here." Griffith read out, showing the others,"Now do you believe we have the wrong guy?"

"The first Unsub showed remorse. He wouldn't brag about it or flaunt his latest kill." Reid sighed.

"I can't believe this." Griffith shook his head.

"This victim wasn't posed. The papers never included details about the bodies. If this was a copycat, he could only do it the way he assumed the first killer did." Gideon explained.

"Look, I asked you guys here because I needed your help." Griffith crossed his arms,"You're the experts, but right now it sounds to me like you're trying to cover your own asses."

"Hey, look around. This is not the place for this conversation." Morgan pointed, walking off.

As he was doing crowd control, Elijah spotted the other girl from last night and walked over to her,"I am so sorry."

"You said you caught him." Katie shook her head.

"I said we had someone in custody." He sighed.

"Alisa's dead and you're arguing over wording?" She scoffed.

"No- I'm so sorry." Elijah told her.

Katie spat on Elijah before storming off.

"You need to keep people out of here man!" Reid ran over.

"What? I'm fine. It's nothing." Elijah assured him, wiping his cheek.

Reid handed him a napkin from his pocket.

Elijah sighed, "Thank you."

*********************************

"I can't believe we're actually thinking about letting Tubbs go." Fleur sighed.

"Flo, we have no evidence. Tubbs' lawyer's not gonna met him talk, so we're not gonna get a confession out of him." Morgan shook his head.

"We can still hold him for another 48 hours." JJ nodded.

"You can't hold a suspect indefinitely without any evidence." Elijah leaned back in his chair.

"Not indefinitely, 48 hours. It's enough time to clear the campus." JJ sighed.

"Can we please forget about Tubbs for a minute?" Gideon asked,"Let's just say we have a copycat, who are we talking about?"

"The most common examples are ones that people don't always think of as being copycats. Kids who commit school shootings, also teen suicides. They tend to come in clusters." Reid told them.

"Both models, we're talking about an age range that's consistent with the campus." Emily sighed.

"School shootings fit the classic copycat model. They want their own piece of glory. They're competing." Gideon shrugged.

"Okay, but that doesn't jive with whoever wrote this note. 'He's innocent'." Morgan held it up,"It's about freeing Tubbs, not about stealing any of the credit."

"So, could Tubbs have a partner?" JJ asked.

"Yeah, sure. That's possible, but I think it's highly unlikely." Elijah hummed,"I mean, look at Tubbs. He's a loner, he's anti-social, he's not the partner type."

"It could be more like a groupie. After Kenneth Bianchi was arrested, he actually convinced a woman he hardly knew to attempt a murder so the police would think the Hillside Strangler was still at large." Reid informed them.

"But Tubbs subdues his victims first, he's not powerful." Emily pointed,"Not to mention, the stabbing most likely means he's impotent."

"A groupie doesn't have to know that. All they have to believe is that Tubbs answers some need inside them. And whoever wrote this definitely needs something from Nathan Tubbs." Fleur picked up the letter,"I'm still out here."

*********************************

Back at the sorority house again, Reid, Elijah and JJ were walking with Katie, talking to her about a new suspect. Anna Begley.

"Every girl I know is either bleaching her hair or buying a wig and she goes and dyes her hair dark?" She told them.

"I agree it's weird, but I don't think it's anything to be overly alarmed about. Is there something else?" JJ asked.

"I think I saw stories about the murders taped to her wall." Katie crossed her arms,"And there was like, blood or something all over them."

"What can you tell us about Anna's usual mental state?" Reid tilted his head.

"I don't know. No one really knows her very well. She doesn't play well with others, y'know?" Katie shrugged.

"Anything?" JJ tried.

"I know she cuts herself. She covers it up, but people know." Katie sighed.

Elijah gripped his arms,"Has she ever been violent towards others?"

"I don't think so."

"Does she ever talk about suicide?" He contiued.

Katie sighed, sitting down.

Elijah sat down in front of her,"Talk to us."

"She talks about it all the time, but everyone makes fun of her. Like she thinks she's some goth chick Sylvia Plath." Katie explained.

"It's good that you called us." Elijah told her as Reid took out his phone, calling Hotch.

"It's not just the others who make fun of her. It's me, too." Katie admitted.

Elijah sighed, turning to Reid. He saw this ending one way and it wasn't good... And he was right.

*********************************

In the end, the copycat ended up killing the Unsub and herself. They couldn't save either of them. A few weeks later, Elijah had woken up without Reid by his side. Although he was nearly late for work.

"Shit-" Elijah got up, scrambling to try and get ready,"Boys, why didn't you wake me? Why didn't he wake me?"

Horatio loudly meowed, pawing at his empty bowl. Although Muffin's bowl was full so Horatio was just wanting more food.

"You've already eaten, you. I'm not that thick." Elijah sighed as he put on his tie.

Muffin jumped up, tilting his head.

"I have to go, baby."

Muffin meowed, rubbing his head against his arm before running to the kitchen.

"I don't have time, I'll get something on the way." Elijah shook his head.

Muffin then loudly exclaimed, jumping to the counter.

Elijah looked towards the door before walking to the kitchen. Muffin purred, sitting down.

"What would I do without you?" Elijah looked down at Muffin.

Muffin jumped down and ran off, going to his own food. Elijah took a breakfast bar from the cupboard. It wasn't much, but it would do him for now. Horatio let out another meow, jumping on the cat post.

"I don't know where he is." Elijah shook his head as he headed for the door.

Hopefully Reid was just at the BAU, waiting for him. Elijah was worried about Reid, he didn't like waking up by himself but he pushed his thoughts aside as he got into his car.
