3: The Winter Soldier

(A/N the image above is ya boi Connor the android sent by cyberlife and this is one of the things Willow does when she's contemplating)

Willow's POV

I wasn't surprised by the large amounts of high tech equipment and training space in the avengers base. They tried making conversation with me, but I kept it simple, not wanting to make friends with these people just yet.

"So I'm guessing you're against Hydra like us, right?" Bruce asked.

I was surprised he was asking that question after they invited me into their facility. "Yes,"

"Why? I mean is there any reason, or do you just dislike them because they're bad guys?" Thor asked.

I kept a straight face (A.N: pff my gay ass could never). "Those are stories for another time," I said.

Nobody questioned it, assuming I wanted to keep things to myself, but Steve spoke.

"They captured my best friend, gave him a metal arm and turned him into a weapon, wiping his memory and all," he explained. "Bucky is back with us now, he's taking small steps and beginning to remember who he is, but I'm not letting them off the hook for what they did to him, and what they've been doing to others,"

I turned to look at him and raised an eyebrow. "He has a metal arm? What's his full name?"

"James Buchanan Barnes," Steve stated. "Why?"

Willow's POV, 8 years ago *16*

"Toby," I sobbed, shaking his shoulders as if it would bring him back. I reached up and closed his eye lids, before pulling his body into my chest, and weeping into his soft blonde hair. I heard footsteps approaching, but I didn't move.

"Schnapp sie dir schnell!"

"Binde sie fest und bringe sie zur Krankenstation!"

My small amounts of german language knowledge told me they were going to tie me up, and take me somewhere, but I wasn't sure where.

I didn't fight, or resist. I let them take me. They had taken away the only person I had ever loved, and I wasn't about to let them go. I wanted them to show me who was in charge, and then, when the time was right, I would take them out, 1 by 1, painfully.

I felt restraints being put around my wrists, and I was thrown over somebody's shoulder. They carried me into what looked like a medbay, with lots of beds of injured people, who I had injured earlier on, beside Toby and Zack.

After a thin glass division, there was a weird chair, restraining a man. His eyes were pretty, and his brown hair reached his shoulders. He was surrounded by a series of machines and instruments, and his other arm was fully metal.

As I was carried into the room opposite, he stared at me, almost emotionless.

I was roughly dropped onto a bed, before the man that carried me removed my hand cuffs, and instead replaced it with two restraints, keeping me firmly in bed. People rustled around me inserting needles into my skin, setting up machines and tending to my wounds.

Two men stood by the restrained man, and pushed him backwards forcefully, in the seat. He didn't resist, in fact, he complied, but they were still harsh with him.

He maintained eye contact with me for the most part, which made me feel a little uncomfortable.

"Öffnen!" the guy on his right shouted. The man opened his mouth in response and a gum shield was placed into it.

His head was pushed back, causing him to break eye contact with me for the first time. Some extra restraints automatically clicked into place around his arms. His chest began to heave up and down and he attempted to compose his breathing, and his fists tightened, as if he was bracing himself or something.

Two machine arms came down behind him, and closed around his face. He began to breathe faster and harder, and he muffled his own screams by clenching his mouth together. His screams became louder and more pained as white flashes of light appeared around his head.

5 minutes passed of his intense screams and cries, when the two machine arms eventually lifted from his head again, allowing him to calm down. After he calmed his breathing, he lifted his head and did a double take when he noticed me staring. He frowned, before glaring at me. I looked away quickly.

The door to the glass room opened, and a man in a long black coat walked in. He looked to the nurses and doctors, before saying, "Verlasse uns," then adding "Not you though, Heinrich,"

In response to his words, everyone scattered, leaving the room, except for one man in a lab coat.

The man paced closer to me. "What is your name?"

"Willow," I said.

"Full name?" he asked. When I stayed quiet, his voice turned stern. "It will be easier for the both of us, if you answer everything we ask," he added.

"Willow Brown," I said. The other man wrote things down on his clipboard.

"Middle name?" he pressed.

"I don't have one," I said.

"Very well," he asked about my date of birthday, and I informed him.

The fact that I was only 16 seemed to shock him. "Who sent you here, child? What concern do you have in the business of adults? And what's with the tears? Scared?"

I scoffed. "Just because I'm 16, it doesn't mean I don't know how to fight. I was crying because my friend died. And what did you do to the man in the other room?" I replied.

He smirked, before sitting on the bed beside me. "Emotion is a distraction. If you keep mourning, it'll be you in that chair," he said, darkly.

I shivered involuntarily. "You removed his emotions?"

"Emotions cannot be removed little one, they can only be suppressed." he glanced at the man, before looking back at me. "Emotion comes from attachment. You can't be attached,  if you can't remember what you were attached to," he said, smugly.

They wiped his memory, I thought to myself.

"So are you going to be a good little girl and do what we say, or are we going to have to put you in the chair?"

"What do you want from me?" I asked.

He stood up and walked to the glass. "He is The Winter Soldier. James Buchanan Barnes. As a result of falling off a railway bridge, he lost his arm. He was an enemy, but we gave him a  new lease on life, and made him an arm. Then we gave him a super serum, to strengthen him. And now, he kills on our demand,"

"You turned him into a weapon," I said.

"No," the man turned around. "He had desire. Desire to live. Desire becomes surrender. Surrender becomes power," he said, waving his arms around.

"He had desire to live, not to murder," I said.

"You're starting to annoy me little girl," he said. "I lost hundreds of my men to you and your little bunch of school mates," he snarled. "I said it once, and I'll say it again. You can comply, or you can have your turn in the seat." he looked back towards James. "Unfortunately for James, he keeps remembering his past." I stayed quiet. "I am Rudolf Fischer, this is Heinrich," he motioned to the doctor who had been making notes on me. "He is the one who has developed the serum we are going to test on you."

"Why are you testing it on me? Aren't your own men more trustable?" I asked.

"My men are only here because they're scared. When they were your age, they were sitting at home, drinking soda, not infiltrating weapon development bases in foreign countries." he said, chuckling. "You have so much more potential than them. We could do amazing things together," he sat on the edge of my bed, and placed a hand on my leg. I moved my leg away from him.

"Sir," Heinrich said. "With all due respect, wir brauchen sie, um uns zu entsprechen. Sie zu verführen ist keine gute Idee, die ist feurig,"

My german understanding was only limited, but I realised he was advising him against attempting to get closer to me as they need me to comply. I could speak multiple languages fluently, but I was a little rusty on german. I gave them a face of disgust. Dirty fucker, I thought.

Fischer nodded and removed his hand. "Anyway, I'd better get going. I have some business to attend to. You will be having your first dose of the serum shortly,"

After he left the room, Heinrich left too, and I was taken into another room and put into a chair, like the one James was in, but less restraining. There were multiple of these chairs spaced out in the room, and beside it was yet another glass room, with simple bed in it.

A lady in a white nurses outfit approached me, as everyone left the room. She gave me a smile, and pressed a button, which made all the glass walls of the room turned black.

"Willow, is it?" she brought a pile of clothes towards me. I nodded. "Let me help you put these on," I stayed quiet as she removed my clothes, being careful around my wounds. "My name is Mara," she said. "I'll be around here quite often, so I'm sure we'll get to know each other."

"Are there others like me?" I asked.

"No, just you, and The Winter Soldier. Others . . ." she averted her eyes. "Passed away. I just assist Dr Heinrich, and tend to anyone that needs medical assistance." As she spoke, she folded up my old trousers, and as she tipped them upside down, Toby's dog tag fell out, onto the floor. She picked it up, inspecting it. "What's this? A dog tag? The chain is broken," she observed. "Tobias Lyndley-" she began to state his number and date of birth but I cut her off.

"He gave it to me before he died," I said.

Her eyes softened. She took my hand and caressed it. "The guy outside?" I nodded. "I'm sorry, love." When I didn't say anything, she let go, and put the dog tag in her pocket. "I'll get you a new chain, so that you can wear it, okay?"

I glanced at her, skeptically. "Why are you being nice to me?"

She grabbed a damp warm flannel and wiped down my body. "You remind me of my sister. I imagine that she is probably the same height as you now,"

"If I may ask, where is she?" I said, not wanting to be insensitive.

"She's in England. I haven't seen her in 8 years. I have to do this to protect her," she explained. Mara then dressed me in tight, almost-spandex leggings, and a short sleeved shirt of the same material.

A few minutes later, I spoke again. "If me and the Winter Soldier are the only ones here, then why are there so many chairs?" I said.

"If the serum works on you, it'll be used on others too," she said. She seemed to not want to talk about it any further, so she changed the subject. "After you get the first dose, you'll be taken to a room, where you can sleep. You'll be next to the Winter Soldier, but you can darken your walls if you don't want to see him," she said, whilst making the glass clear again. Mara took my old clothes and left the room, after giving me a smile.

Other people entered, including Heinrich. They strapped me in and hooked me up to observation screens and stuff. They prepared to inject the liquid in a small blue vial into my arm.

"Can I ask what this is supposed to do?" I asked.

Heinrich eyed me, before checking the needle. "Strengthen your muscles, and potentially give you power to harness energy and release it. It is a prototype." he said. "Relax," he added, before injecting it into my vein.

I grunted in pain, watching the veins and capillaries around the entry point glow blue. It spread across my body, a cold feeling, before it faded away a few seconds later.

My head began to feel a little weird, as if I was about to faint, but I composed myself.

"We'll need to give your body time to adjust." He made his way to the door. "Take her to her room. Call us if you see anything on the surveillance," he said before leaving.

On his orders, I was taken into a simple room with a bed, like the one I had seen earlier. Opposite me, was an identical room, in which The Winter Soldier sat, on the bed.

"Hi," I said, from my bed.

He looked up from the floor, freezing when he saw me.

"I'm Willow," I added, hoping to get some words out of him.

He stood up, before looking above me, to the top right corner of my room. I followed his gaze, noticing a flashing surveillance camera. James' room also had one.

"Are we not allowed to speak?" I asked. The glass would have muffled my sound a little, but he could definitely still hear me.

He shrugged, before walking closer to the glass. I stood up and did the same, approaching the glass between us.

"I would introduce myself, but I don't know who I am," he said.

"You're The Winter Soldier," I said.

He exhaled sharply, almost amused. "Everyone keeps saying that. Is that who I am, or who they made me?" he said.

Before I had a chance to respond, he tapped the metal lining of the glass, and it darkened before me.

My shoulders slumped. "Fucking great. I'm stuck in a Hydra base in Germany and my next door neighbor is antisocial," I mumbled, before returning to my bed. I heard a creak from the bed next door, implying James had sat down, or something.

I sat on my bed and leaned on the wall, facing the glass between our rooms. As I did, I raised both my arms to support my head against the wall, but a sharp pain down my arm made me drop them again.

I frowned, placing a finger on the blue mark where the serum had been injected into me. The veins around it on a radius of about 5 cms were blue and glowing.

I could have sworn I'd seen it fade away at the time. Why was it glowing again? I flexed my bicep and watched as for brief second the glowing spread, before shrinking again.

"What the fuck," I murmured.

"What's that?" James' voice made me flinch.

"Jesus, I thought you didn't want to talk?" I said, standing up and going near him. "My arm is being real weird right now. And my head feels weird."

He inspected my arm from his side. "Never seen anything like it. Not like I would remember," he said.

"True," I tightened my fist again, watching the glow continue down towards my wrist, before vanishing again. "It doesn't hurt anymore," I said.

"What about your other arm?" James asked.

Like he suggested, I tried clenching my left arm. The same glow travelled down from my bicep. I tried them both at the same time. "What the hell is this?" I paused. "Well, it's the super serum, but I mean what does it do?"

"Who fucking knows?" he chuckled, for the first time.

"Willow?!"

I opened my eyes. "Yeah?"

"You zoned out for like 30 seconds," Natasha said.

"Where is James?" I asked.

"Why?" Steve asked.

"Where is he?" I repeated.

"First door down the hall, on the left," Bruce said.
