25: Caprese Pt. 1

I'm sitting on Eliza's comfy desk chair, spinning here and there as she's practicing some scales on her guitar, cursing every time she gets a note wrong. After a while, she huffs and tosses the beautiful Fender at the edge of her bed.

"I can't stop thinking about Alex," she says, slightly kicking her guitar.

"Well, now that he broke up with Sofia I could hook you two up. He had a crush on you in Middle School."

Eliza rolls her eyes. "I want to kill that bitch. Kalisthenis too, actually. I used to like him but he's his brother's brother after all."

I cross my arms. "Don't say that! You don't know in how much pain he is!"

Eliza squints at me, her light green eyes looking darker through her black lashes. "Do you?"

If there's a person I can't ever fool, it's Eliza. All it takes is a slip-up from me and her high-achieving brain catches it immediately, analyzing a thousand possible scenarios and determining which are most likely before I can even blurt out a distractive lie.

"As a matter of fact, I do."

She nods. "How?"

I let out a defeated sigh before spilling everything to her. All about me knowing it for months, talking about it with Kal and Sofia, and -quite honestly- encouraging them both to keep it to themselves. Eliza's face reddens with anger the more I talk, just as my own reddens from embarrassment.

"I can't believe you did this to Alex! I thought you were protecting him!"

"But can't you understand my thought process? I wanted to protect him, and the best way was to hide the truth."

Eliza tilts her head to the side, shrugging. "I can understand that. Still, it would have been easier if you told him then. It was March, he had at least one month to get over it and take his exams."

My eyebrows shoot up. "Do you really think he would have gotten over it in time?"

Eliza thinks about it for a moment before shaking her head and tightening her ponytail. "You should really tell him now, though. Unless you can live with the guilt."

My shoulders fall. "I can't. It was easier when he didn't know but now... I can't even justify myself."

"That's right," Eliza says.

"Thanks for the pep talk."

Eliza rolls her eyes but laughs. She clears her throat and smiles. "Summer, Alex will forgive you if you tell him your reasons, and that forgiveness will come sooner the sooner you tell him the truth. Before you know it, the four of you will be eating all the sugar in the world and watching those cheesy superhero movies."

A hesitant smile spreads itself on my lips. "You think so?"

"I know so, but you have to tell him quickly, alright?" Eliza yawns and stretches her arms. "I guess I should go to bed now."

I get up from the chair. "Yeah, me too."

"Tell Kal I said hello."

I stop in my tracks, turning on my heel. "What do you mean?"

Eliza smirks. "I know what you two do at night."

My jaw drops.

"Relax, I'm not going to tell anyone."

I frown. Eliza knows we're going after drug dealers and she's covering up for me? She ratted me out when I was sneaking out to go to the cinema when I was sixteen and she still hasn't snitched me now? She must have lots of faith in me.

"Thank you," I say with a smile and strut to my room, tie a hoodie around my waist, and put on my superstars before climbing out of my window to go to Kal's.

I know Lucky is going to follow me, so I call out for her to connect her collar to the leash at her house, though she doesn't appear.

"Lucky, I have your favourite food here, so it would be awesome if you showed up," I shout, hoping she might understand what I'm saying and come running to me.

"Dogs don't talk, stop being creepy!" someone from the house opposite mine yells.

Shaking my head, I make my way to Kal's. Lucky is probably in one of her late-night adventures now and will come back in the morning when she's hungry. She uses me like that.

I reach Kal's house and walk around it, trying to locate his room. Turns out it's the only one from which light is coming out. I lean closer and put on my hoodie, ready to give him a mini heart attack. As I peer from outside the window, though, I see him sitting cross-legged on his bed, holding Lucky in his lap while he's reading a book placed before him. The only light that's on is the lamp on his desk, illuminating the place with a soft warm glow.

I hate admitting it's a good picture, but I take out my phone and capture it before disturbing it.

I pull my hood lower to my face and slide the window open before getting in, laughing at the way Kal jumps out of his skin when he sees me and grabs his book as if it's a weapon. Lucky growls and looks serious, ready to attack until she realizes it's me and she wags her tail instead.

I push my hoodie off my head and grin at the boy who's currently taking deep breaths and clutching the fabric of his yellow shirt. "Hi, Kal. You look a little shocked."

He lets out a sigh and places the book back in the dark wooden library that's occupying the corner at the left of the door. It is filled with -you guessed it- books of different colours and sizes on every shelf.

"Hey, why don't you colour-code them?" I ask. "It could look like those libraries on Pinterest."

Kal turns to me, his olive-green irises burning holes in my own brown. "That's what you have to say? You almost gave me a heart attack!"

I stuff my hands in my back pockets. "Maybe that was the plan."

He rolls his eyes. "Since that plan failed, what do you want to do now?"

I grin at him, showing every one of my teeth.

"Awesome, staying inside and reading books it is. What do you want to read first?"

I bend down and stroke Lucky's head. "Nice try, Kalisthenis, but no. Besides, who reads a whole book in one night?"

"Me, Winter," he says.

I tear my gaze away from Lucky and notice he's smirking proudly.

"Why did you let Lucky in? Isn't your brother allergic?"

Kal shrugs. "He doesn't come into my room, usually, so it won't be a problem." He kneels down and takes my dog in his arms. "Besides, this cutie was outside my window. How could I not let her in?"

"Whatever, put on your hoodie. We have to go."

Kal looks up at me. "Sum, it didn't exactly go well the last time."

I fold my arms. "Look, Eliza knows about it and she said we should keep it up."

Kal's eyebrows shot up. "Eliza said that?"

I bite the corner of my lip as I nod. It's not exactly what she said but she certainly implied it.

"No one came after us, though. They would have by now if they saw us or wanted to. Shouldn't we just...forget about it?"

I suck in my lips. "We could. But what about that man they killed? What about them profiting by ruining people's lives? What if we could change that?"

Kal doesn't say anything for a while and keeps stroking Lucky's fur.

"They're not the only ones. It won't make a difference."

"That's where you're wrong. For some people, it's going to make a difference. Isn't that enough?"

"Enough to possibly get myself killed?" Kal asks, fixating those green eyes on me.

He really is in the mood to flex tonight, huh?

"You're not going to get yourself killed, Kal. We're not going to get close to them."

"May I remind you the last time a guy came running at us?"

I bite the corner of my lips. "Well, we're going to go for the big shots. They won't run after us."Kal doesn't look convinced. He's staring at me, challenging me to find an actual argument.

"These guys are probably big-bellied cops or...or teachers or that creepy lady from the shoe shop. They can't even run," I say with a smile.

Kal bites his bottom lip and his face muscles grow tight as a shaking motion comes from his chest to his shoulders. His laugh comes out like water through a dam. Even Lucky, who is laying at the edge of Kal's bed, looks at him, her ears shot in the air.

"Glad you're having fun," I say patting his back as he's still laughing at my lamest attempt of a joke. "Put on a pair of shoes and we'll be ready to go."

Kal holds up a finger.

"Yeah, one pair of shoes is enough, that's right," I say with a smile.

Somehow, he doubles himself over and bursts into a loud cackle, clutching his stomach as if he's in pain. I want to stay straight-faced, shake my head, and go after whoever the drug dealers are on my own. But before I can stop myself, my poker straight mouth twitches upwards and I'm giggling despite the lameness of my "joke".

I calm down but still, my lips stay in that small smile as I gaze at Kal, who's trying to collect himself. He's taking deep breaths, slowly exhaling as he focuses on the ground.

He looks better now than when he sleeps.

I frown. Is my brain allowed to just spew nonsense like that? I mentally swat the thought away and focus on tying my shoelaces tighter, in case I have to run and they decide to untie themselves just so I trip over my own feet and die.

Kal? Who are you laughing with?

I freeze to the sound of his mum's voice but Kal only lets out a small chuckle.

"No one, Mum," he shouts. "I'm reading Tumblr posts."

Mrs. Mona doesn't say anything else, which makes me slightly worried that this is a normal thing for Kal to say.

"Stop that, kid, it's not 2014 anymore," Christopher shouts and Kal rolls his eyes.

Kal shifts his attention to me and I notice there are tears around his eyes, which only confirms his non-existent sense of humor. He beams at me before engulfing me in a hug, wrapping his arms around me and resting his head on my shoulder. I can smell the familiar scent of cucumber and coconut and feel the warmth of his body even though my hoodie. I barely have time to hug him back before he pulls away with a smile.

"Thank you, I haven't laughed like that in a while."

"Are you sure? Because it seems like Tumblr posts crack you up."

Kal chuckles again but soon winces. "My stomach hurts from all these laughs."

"Stomach ache was in my plan, I'll admit it," I say raising one hand in the air. "Chasing bad guys was in it, too."

.........................

I'm going to cut it here for now :) I'm writing a little bit every day and trying to figure out how I want to end this story, I don't know why but I just can't see a clear ending so far.

When I started writing my thought process was:

1) I want to write something chill, funny and fluffy taking place in summer, also in Greek. I should name it... *makes an empty word document* Two Scoops Of Parfait

2) What should it be about? Oh lol it should start with a girl named Summer because that's so tacky you can't even make fun of it, riding a bike with her best friend/crush.

3) Lmao let's give said crush a girlfriend

Aaaand yeah it was all fun, maybe that's why I liked and still like writing it.
