Chapter 33

The sky became dark and the night was going pretty smooth. Drew, Melissa and Devine were having dinner together. Melissa was acting normal. She smiled as she served Drew at the dining table. Everything was normal. The night passed quite fast. Drew and Melissa usually slept early since they woke up early in the morning whereas Devine studied till late at night. That night too, it was the same routine. At around nine o'clock, Drew and Melissa went to bed.

Lying down next to his wife, Drew was going to talk to her to ask if she was fine. He was also going to apologise for talking to her in a loud tone. However, when he turned around to speak to her, he found out that Melissa was asleep. Her eyes were closed and she was breathing gently. Drew smiled and let her rest. She had a bad day. Drew felt tired too. He turned to the other side and closed his eyes. Soon, he felt asleep.

The alarm rang. Drew opened his right eye and looked at the clock. It was already four in the morning. He scratched his eyes and stretched his arms. He had to get up to get ready for work. He turned around to the side of Melissa. He tapped his hands on the bed. She was not there.

"She already woke up," Drew thought to himself. He slowly sat up on the bed. He stretched his arms again. The door of the room was closed. He stood up and he walked out of the room bare footed.

He made his way into the kitchen, but, he did not see Melissa there. He searched into the living room and in the washroom. Alas, she was nowhere to be found. Fear filled Drew's body.

"What if she went to the basement and–" he paused. His eyes opened bigger and he rushed towards the basement.

The door was closed. He opened it as quickly as he could. He ran down the stairs. However, the basement was empty. The table on which there was a body the previous day was now empty. All the books on the table to the corner were untouched. The candles and the skulls were not there. Everything looked normal. Melissa had cleared the basement as ordered by Drew. The latter led out a sigh of relief. Deep in his mind, he thanked God for guiding his wife to the right path. He then made his way upstairs.

As he left the basement, he wondered where could Melissa go so early in the morning. He then remembered that he had not checked the room of Devine.

Without wasting any time he walked towards Devine's room. The door was closed. He slowly opened it and peeked into the room. The bed was empty. He was shocked. He opened the door wider and he stepped into the room. He looked everywhere inside, but, he did not see Devine anywhere. His hair stood on its end when he noticed that the small cupboard of Devine was opened and all her clothes had disappeared.

"Oh my God!" Drew exclaimed with terror. He quickly ran into his room and he opened the cupboard. Only his clothes were there. The ones of Melissa had vanished.

Drew's heart started to pound faster.

"She ran away. She ran away with my daughter!" he muttered to himself.

He hurried to his bed and he lied down to slid under it. The book was not there. He once again looked for it. It was not there. He saw some of the tape that was still stuck to the bottom of the bed. Some of it had fallen on the floor. Drew got out and stood up. He placed his hands on his waist. He had a headache. He did not know what to do. He felt as if his whole world had shattered. He walked into the living room and sat down on a chair. He feared if something bad would happen to his daughter. He was not understanding what to do. Where to find them?

He felt lost. He could not handle that situation on his own. He walked towards the fixed telephone and he ended up calling his father. Drew had immense trust on his father. He was the only man on whom Drew could count at that moment.

Once, his father had picked up the phone call, Drew could not hold back his tears. He felt shattered and he started to cry his heart out over the phone. He narrated everything to his father. He complained about how his happy family got shattered. He told him about the devilish change in his wife. He was hopeless. He told him about how Melissa became madly obssesed with that book. He loved his wife too much and the fact that his wife had left him for black magic broke him completely. He was terrified. What if Melissa created a bad impact on Devine? He pleaded to his father to find them because alone, he would never be able to search for them. Drew's father reassured him. He told him not to worry and that he will find his family. He also promised that he would clear things between him and Melissa.

Drew was reassured. He trusted his father. His stayed at home and waited for a good news. He cried the whole day. He didn't eat even a morsel. He waited for his wife and daughter to come back home.

At exactly ten p.m, Drew heard a knock. His pupils dilated. He was lying on the bed. He instantly woke up and wiped his tears. He ran towards the door and shouting his wife's name, he opened the door. Alas, it was not her. An elderly man with a moustache stood in front of him. It was his father. Drew felt a gust of emotion. As soon as his father got inside the house, he gave him a hug and cried in his arms.

"I'm sorry, son," his father apologised.

Drew pulled himself out of the hug and asked, "Did you find them?"

His father lowered his gaze and shook his head. "I tried my best. I am really sorry," he said again.

Drew had lost all hope. His father stayed at his place overnight and left in the morning after talking to Drew and giving him enough support to continue living his life. Drew was still shattered, but, he decided to get back to normal so that his father would not stress out seeing him in a bad condition.

The next day, he woke up early and got ready to go to work. He missed his wife and his daughter. He still had the hope to find them. He had decided to try search for them after he would apply for a leave at work. However, as soon as he reached the station, he was called by his seniors in their office. He was given a transfer to Waco. He took his transfer letter and walked back home.

On his way, he met a man who lived at the start of the street.

"I'm really sorry for your wife," the man showed his sympathy.

"How do you know?" Drew asked.

"My brother went to search for her with your father," the man replied.

Drew did not know what to say. He realised that sooner or later, people would find out, so, there was no reason to hide the matter. He remained silent.

"Be brave. Whatever your father did was for your own benefit," the man said.

Drew furrowed his eyebrows and stared at the man. "What do you mean? What did my father do?" he asked.

"I meant to say that he did the right thing when he burnt your wife. After all she was a sorceress and she was a danger to us," the man replied.

His words echoed through Drew's head. He said nothing to the man. He walked away from him slowly and he made his way towards his house. He was broken. His father lied to him. His father said that he didn't find them. However, he did found them and he had killed his wife. As he walked towards his house along the street, his neighbours and the randon people who were outside stared at him with pity. Some people were afraid of him. When they saw him passing by, they quickly entered their houses. Drew felt a heavy pain. His whole body felt numb as he walked towards his house.

Once he entered his house, he did not spare any time. He started to pack his things to move to Waco. He did not want to live in that house anymore. He wanted to leave the town where people would always stare at him as if he was a criminal. He was grateful he got a transfer. Before he left the house, he visited the basement, the place where he had fought with Melissa. When he went down there, he noticed the books that were placed on the table to a corner. He walked towards it and picked one of the books. It was huge and brown in colour. On its cover, it was written, "Out of science's league".

He picked it up and sat on the floor on the basement. He opened the book and started to read the first few pages. In the book, most of the supernatural activities and rituals were explained.
