Chapter 30

Gordon and Drew were brought into the same large room. There were around eight hospital beds which were placed side by side. Gordon lied down on one bed while Drew lied on the one next to him. There was a white curtain that separated each beds. They were both being attended by a different nurse.

After examining the ankle of Gordon, the nurse said, "It is not too serious. You will be able to walk properly after some rest."

She then walked towards a small drawer which was just next to the bed. She took out a tablet. On the drawer, there was a bottle of water and a glass. She poured water into the glass and offered it to Gordon.

"Take one of the pills and try to get some sleep. You will be fine by tomorrow morning," the nurse said and smiled warmly at Gordon.

Gordon did as she instructed and he gulped down the pill.

After he took the medecine, he asked, "There was another lady who was brought to the hospital. She was stabbed with a knife. How is she?"

"The doctor is handling her case. I do not have any information about right now, I am sorry," the nurse replied.

"Oh, no worries," Gordon replied.

"She seemed serious. Do you know her?" the nurse asked.

Gordon nodded.

"Well, do not stress out. Take some rest. I will go and see how she is doing and then I will let you know," she replied and blinked her eyes at Gordon.

She seemed to be a kind nurse, unlike Devine. Before she left, she instructed, "Please do not get off the bed on your own. If you need to go to the washroom or if you need anything else, just press this buzzer." She pointed her finger at a small blue button which was on the wall to the right of Gorodon.

Gordon nodded and replied, "Thank you."

The nurse smiled and then she walked away. The room was silent. The curtain to his right was closed. He knew that Drew was resting on the bed next to him. He slowly reached for the white curtain and he pushed it to the side to open it. He saw Drew lying down on the bed. His eyes were focused on the ceiling.

"Are you fine?" Gordon asked with a low voice.

Drew slowly turned his face to look at Gordon. He faintly smiled and replied, "Yes."

However, Gordon knew he was not fine. Drew sat up on the bed and leaned his back.

"What are you doing? Lie down and rest," Gordon instantly said.

"No no, I am fine. Thank you," Drew replied.

There was an awkward silence between the two of them. Gordon did not know what to say. He had a lot of questions to ask Drew, but, he knew that it was not a good time to ask. He had just lost his daughter. Gordon preferred to remain silent and he decided to give Drew time. A few minutes later, Gordon suddenly remembered Veronica and Miguel. He did not see them anywhere before reaching the hospital.

"Where is Veronica?" Gordon finally cut off the silence. "And Miguel?"

Drew looked at him and replied, "They must be in the hospital too. They were injured."

"How?" Gordon asked.

Drew took a heavy breath. "When we reached near our vehicles. I drank some water and felt better. Veronica called the fire brigade and when she was done, I called the headquarters to ask for more officers as enforcement since only the two of us would not be enough to search for Devine alone. I opened the door of the car and grabbed a new shirt from the backseat. Miguel was still carrying Chloe. Her eyes were closed. I told him to place her on the backseat and he agreed–" Drew started to cough.

Gordon quickly grabbed the bottle of water which was on the drawer next to his bed. He poured the water into the glass and offered it to Drew. The latter continued to cough and he slowly grabbed the glass. He took small sips and cleared his throat.

"I'm sorry," he apologised in a whisper.

"Are you okay now?" Gordon asked with concern as he took back the glass from him.

Drew swallowed a lump of saliva and nodded.

He leaned back to the bed and continued, "–When Miguel tried to lie Chloe down in the car, her eyes opened suddenly. She quickly got out of the car. She was holding a knife. Miguel was scared and he tried to grab the knife from her, but, doing so, the knife pierced into his arm. Chloe pushed him with a great force. Miguel fell on Veronica who was standing behind him. In the fraction of a second, Chloe ran away into the alley with the knife in her hand. I was scared she might hurt you and Alicia. I grabbed my gun and followed her. I was having difficulties to breathe, but, I tried my best to reach there and when I did, I saw Devine attacking Alicia. The rest you know."

Gordon did not say anything. Drew was trying to act normal. However, by the way he was talking, Gordon figured out that he was not fine. He was guilty. Something was tiring him from the inside. He had a lot of secrets with him. A lot of painful secrets.

Gordon was silent and calm, until, all of a sudden. He remembered Chloe. Where was she? Was she brought to the hospital too. He tried to recall where he saw her last. When the officer was helping him to get out of the hole, he saw Alicia who was being carried by another policeman, he saw Drew and Devine, but, he did not recall seeing Chloe anywhere.

"Where is Chloe?" he abruptly asked.

Drew stared at him with wide eyes and thought for a second. However, he did not recall seeing Chloe anywhere either.

"When I came there, I saw only Devine and Alicia. Chloe was not there," Drew replied as his heartbeat increased.

"Does this mean she is roaming freely outside?" Gordon muttered. "Oh my God! This can be a danger to other people," he continued with fear.

However, Drew calmly shook his head. "She will not be a danger," he said.

Gordon's forehead ceased and he looked at Drew with confusion.

"She could only listen to Devine, but, Devine is dead now," Drew's voice shook when he mentioned about Devine being no more alive.

"How can you be sure about this?" Gordon questioned.

"I've read about parasitic spirits in my book," Drew said.

Gordon remembered the big, fat and brown which he always spotted Drew reading. Before he could ask any other questions, the kind nurse entered the room.

She walked toward the bed of Gordon and stood between his and Drew's bed.

"I checked on the other lady you asked about. Ummm, Alicia, right?" the nurse spoke.

Gordon nodded.

The nurse then continued, "She is out of danger."

Gordon led out a sigh of relief.

"Dr Sam was handling her case and he said that the injury is deep. She lost a lot of blood and if she stresses herself, she will lose more blood which might be harmful for her," the nurse explained.

She then added, "But she is fine, do not worry. She is currently sleeping and I suggest you both to get some sleep too."

"Ummm–" Drew interrupted. The nurse turned to look at him.

"–There was another woman. She was shot," Drew hesitantly asked.

"Unfortunately, she is dead. Her body is currently placed in the morgue," the nurse informed. She then lowered he gaze and in a low voice, she muttered, "Poor Devine, she was a good colleague of mine."

Drew's heart ached. His eyes glowed up again when the flashback of him shooting his daughter played in his head.

"Anyway," the nurse said. "Close your eyes and try to sleep. It is already late. I will check on you in the morning."

She smiled at them and then she closed the curtain between Gordon and Drew. She walked away and switched off the light of the room.

Gordon and Drew lied back on their respective beds. Gordon turned to his right and he closed his eyes to try to sleep. However, he did not sleep immediately. There were a lot of questions lingering is his mind. "What happened in the past life of Drew? Who was his wife? How did his wife die? After whatever he witnessed that day, should he believe in black magic? Should he believe in Sorcery?"
