Chapter 3

The voice of Chloe echoed through the whole house. Gordon stared at her with shock. Chloe looked at them with a tensed look on her face. Miguel couldn't believe his eyes.

"She is.... dead?" Gordon asked.

No one answered his question. Chloe was starting to break down.

"Mrs Davis, I hope you are telling the truth," Gordon said.

"What do you mean you hope I'm telling the truth? I saw my daughter being cremated three weeks ago with my own eyes!" Chloe yelled with frustration. She breathed heavily as anxiety filled her.

"But it was clearly her in that recording," Gordon insisted.

It was true. Sabrina was indeed the girl holding a knife who was caught in that recording. They couldn't understand how it was possible, but, they knew their daughter was no more. Miguel tried to remain calm and he handed back the tablet to another officer. Gordon had a suspicious look on his face. He observed both of them very closely as if they were lying.

Miguel walked towards Chloe and helped her sit on the couch. He knew that whatever was happening was too much for her to endure as she had a weak heart.

After Chloe sat on the couch, Miguel held her hands and comforted her. "Everything will be fine."

He blinked his eyes and walked back to face Gordon.

"Inspector, Sabrina died three weeks ago and it is the truth," he talked.

Still with a suspicious look on his face, Gordon asked, "Do you have a death certificate?"

Miguel scratched his fingers. He was starting to feel irritated by the inspector now. He had completely forgotten about the death certificate and he didn't get one.

He inhaled deeply and answered, "No, I forgot about that-"

"No worries, a death certificate can be forged," Gordon cut him off.

He sounded sarcastic to Miguel. The latter got a feeling that Gordon thought they were lying when they clearly were not.

"If you have any doubts, you can interrogate the neighnours. They all attended the funeral," Miguel suggested.

"This should be right Mr Davis. This is a very critical case, so, I can't take everything lightly," Gordon replied.

Miguel nodded.

Gordon turned around to walk towards the door, but, he stopped and faced miguel again.

"Mr Davis," he called out.

Miguel was still watching him.

"I will be back after talking to the neighbours, so, please stay here itself. To be sure that you don't leave, I will leave two of my officers here," he said as he approached Miguel.

Once he was quite close to him, he whispered, "I hope it's not a problem."

"Sure," Miguel replied as he looked directly in his eyes.

Before leaving, Gordon watched Chloe who was sitting on the couch and holding her stomach. He then noticed that Miguel was staring at him. He smiled and left. Two of the officers stayed back. They stood at the door itself.

Miguel walked towards Chloe and sat next to her.

Chloe watched him with tears in her eyes.

"What was that?" she questioned as tears ran down her cheeks.

"I don't know. I still cannot fathom what happened," Miguel answered as he massaged his temples with his fingers.

"They are accusing our deceased daughter of a crime," she stuttered as she eventually burst out crying.

"Hey hey hey, everything will be fine," Miguel tried to reassure her.

"How?" Chloe asked, still in tears.

"I don't know, but, we are telling the truth. I'm sure the inspector will be convinced after talking to the neighbours," Miguel explained.

Chloe nodded and then cracked her fingers. She couldn't get that video out of her mind. She was scared.

Miguel walked towards the kitchen and brought a glass of water for her. She drank the water at one go. She took deep breaths and said, "I'll call mom,"

"Okay, but, tell her not to worry," Miguel answered back.

Chloe led out a sigh and then took out her mobile phone from her clutch. She dialed Alicia's number. Miguel sat on the chair in front of her.

Chloe waited, but, Alicia didn't pick up the call. She placed her phone next to her and leaned her back against the couch. After a few seconds, she sat straight and fixed her eyes at Miguel.

"What if the girl in that recording was just Sabrina's look alike?" She asked aloud.

Miguel looked at her. He didn't say anything.

"Can't it be posssible?" Chloe asked again.

Miguel stood up and walked towards her. He took a seat next to her and calmly explained, "It is possible. The police will find out. Stop pressuring your mind because of this issue, please."

He was concerned for his wife. The death of Sabrina had already killed her soul and now this crime issue was giving her more stress. He feared Chloe might suffer from a severe anxiety attack.

Chloe remained quiet and leaned back again. They waited in the living room itself for about one hour. The two police officers didn't move their gaze from the couple and they observed each and every movements they made.

One hour later, inspector Gordon and three police officers entered the house. Both Miguel and Chloe stood up and rushed towards the door. Gordon was already inside of the house.

"I hope all your doubts have been cleared now," Miguel said.

Gordon crossed his arms and replied, "Not really Mr Davis."

"What do you mean?" Chloe asked with worry. Her forehead ceased.

"Well, I have interrogated all the people in the nearby houses and you were right. They all attended your daughter's funeral," he said.

"Ahh! See!" Miguel exclaimed.

Gordom raised an eyebrow and continued, "Yeah, however–"

"However? However what?" Miguel was getting impatient.

"—However, they didn't see the body. The coffin was closed," Gordon completed his phrase.

Miguel rolled his eyes and he was getting uncomfortable.

"Yes it was closed, but-" he was going to explain, but, he got cut off by Gordon.

"Why did you close the casket?" Gordon asked.

"-We closed it because our daughter's head was sabotaged and it would disturb the visitors," Miguel justified.

"Not bad as an excuse," Gordon smirked.

"It is not an excuse!" Miguel shouted as he balled his hand into a fist. He couldn't control his anger anymore. The investigation was getting on his nerves, or, to be be more precised, Gordon was getting on his nerves. He raised his hand and he was going to punch Gordon in the face, but, the other officer held him up.

Chloe tried to stop him too. Two policemen caught his hands and pulled him away from Gordon.

"Mr Davis, you know a culprit always react in this way," Gordon said.

Chloe stood in front of him and confronted him in a loud tone, "Inspector, we are telling the truth. My daughter is no more!"

"I would like to believe you, but, I need evidence. We have one which proves that you're lying, that recording which we cannot ignore," Gordon said.

"Fine then, we can go to the cemetery. There, you'll see who is lying after finding my daughter's corpse in her grave," Chloe confidently said. She was in rage. She didn't think twice before speaking.

Gordon furrowed his eyebrows. He thought for a second.

"Which cemetery?" He asked.

"We have only one cemetery in this town," Miguel sarcastically replied to his question.

Gordon stared and him. Miguel looked into his eyes too, with no fear.

"Let's go," he said and turned around. He gestured the other officers to let go of Miguel.

Chloe walked towards Miguel and told him to keep his calm or he might get arrested. Miguel simply nodded. He tried to calm himself and inhaled deeply. He was not liking the behaviours of Gordon at all.

"Are you coming?" Gordon asked.

Chloe nodded and held Miguel's hand.

"I'll take the car keys," Miguel said.

"We have enough transport, Mr Davis," Gordon strictly said.

"We are coming," Chloe said as she squeezed the hand of Miguel so that he would stay quiet.

They all walked out of the house. They got in the police van and drove to the cemetery.

Chloe regretted what she did. She allowed Gordon to dig the grave where her daughter was resting. Her heart squeezed inside of her. She didn't realise before talking back in the house. There was so much pressure on her that she thought this might be the only way to convince Gordon. She had no other choice than preparing herself mentally to see the decomposing body of her late daughter.
