Chapter 28
They could smell the smoke from outside now.
"We should call a fire brigade," Gordon said. He then bent near Drew. "Are you good?" he asked.
Drew nodded as he coughed.
"Come on. Let's get to the car. I have spare shirts in my jeep," Gordon said.
As they started to walk away from the house, Gordon looked downwards and he noticed traces of mud. It seemed like a vehicle with muddy tyres was driven towards the end of the alley.
Drew could not stop coughing. Gordon turned to him and rubbed his back. Drew gave him a faint smile.
"Let's go. We will get you some water," he said to Drew.
They then made their way along the alley to walk towards their vehicles. Chloe did not move. Miguel carried her and he noticed that she was lighter than before. They were already getting nearer to their vehicles. The alley was not that long and there were very few houses along it.
Miguel found Chloe weird. She was not talking at all. While she was in the arms of Miguel, her eyes were closed. Miguel felt her body. It was cold.
"What is wrong with her?" he questioned.
"Did she have another attack?" he asked again.
Gordon and Drew remained quiet. They did not want them to freak out. They were also shocked and dumb struck when they saw Chloe staying quiet. A few moments before she was setting them on fire and now she was being completely silent. What was most important at that time was to find Devine. Gordon took out his phone from the pocket of his pants, but, it had switched off. He tried to switch it on but it was not working. Apparently it had broken.
"Alicia, give me your phone," he turned around and said to Alicia who was walking behind him.
"It is in the car," Alicia answered.
Gordon gave no response. He had stopped moving and he kept on staring at Alicia.
"What happened?" Alicia asked.
Gordon furrowed his eyebrows and kept on staring at her. The others had stopped walking and they turned around to see what was wrong.
"Did you notice the light there?" Gordon asked.
Alicia then realised that Gordon was actually looking behind her. She turned around and at the end of the alley, she noticed a sparkling light.
"It was not there before," Drew said as he panted.
Gordon took a few steps forward. "There is a forest there, right?" he asked.
"Not a forest, but, it is an isolated land. There are a few trees there," Drew explained.
"This looks mysterious," Gordon said as he took a few more steps forward. He observed the light and he remembered the traces of muddy tyres that he saw from the house.
"Go to the vehicle. I will go and check what's there," he said.
"No!" Alicia shouted.
Gordon turned to look at her.
"Do not go alone," she said with concern.
"I will go with you," Drew slowly said.
"You are not well Drew. Go back to the car and take some rest. I will go and check, do not worry," Gordon replied.
"Let me come with you then," Alicia stubbornly said.
Gordon shook his head and replied, "It might be dangerous."
"I made my decision," Alicia insisted as she walked towards him. "Let's go," she said.
Gordon knew the characteristics of Alicia and he just knew that no matter how many times he would tell her not to come, she would not listen. Hence, he simply agreed as he did not want to start an argument with her and hereby waste time.
He simply nodded and then turned at Veronica. "Call the fire brigade. This fire can be dangerous," he said and then he made his way towards the end of the alley. Alicia followed him while the others made their way towards their vehicles. Drew was not feeling well. Veronica helped him to walk.
Alicia and Gordon walked at a high speed and as they passed across Devine's house, they realised that the fire was getting more intense. They felt a terrible heat when they passed nearer to it.
After a few seconds, they had already reached the end of the alley. Drew was right. There was an isolated land with a few trees here and there. As they walked, they were getting closer to the light and they heard noises. The light was emerging through the leaves of a small tree. They walked nearer and when they reached at the tree, they saw a scooter and its headlights were on. The light hit on a person. Gordon immediately recognised the person. It was Devine. She was digging the soil. She had already dug a quite big hole.
"What is she doing?" Alicia whispered.
"Shhh," Gordon placed his finger on his lips.
They stood behind the tree and they observed Devine. The latter was focused on digging the soil. Alicia had placed her hand on the tree and suddenly, she felt something walking on her skin. She instantly looked at her hand and she saw a spider walking on her hand. She could not help but she screamed aloud. She started to push away the spider and she eventually came out of her hiding spot. Gordon rushed towards her to help her calm down. The spider went away. Alicia breathed heavily as Gordon held her hands.
"So cute," they heard a voice.
Obviously, it was Devine. She watched them as she stood with a shovel. Her dress was dirty. There was mud all over her hands and skirt. Her hair was tied up into a bun.
Gordon and Alicia freaked out. They stood still and waited for Devine's next move.
"You've come too early. I have not yet dug your grave. I'm still digging for my father," she said.
Gordon and Alicia stared at her with confusion.
"What grave are you talking about?" he asked.
"Your grave. You were going to die–" Devine talked and paused. Her shifted to Alicia.
"–but I guess this old hag saved your life," she continued as she made an eye contact with Alicia.
"No worries, you will still die," she smirked.
"If there is someone who is going to die here, it will be you," Gordon said as he balled his hands into fists.
Devine smiled widely and said, "You really are a firm inspector, aren't you?" She then examined Gordon from head to toe.
"A shirtless, firm inspector," she added and then laughed.
Indeed, Gordon was shirtless since his shirt had caught fire.
"Don't try to change the topic. You better surrender yourself!" Gordon exclaimed.
"Surrender for what?" Devine asked as she raised one side of her lips.
"For stealing bodies and performing witchcraft," Gordon replied.
Alicia immediately turned to look at him. She was surprised when she heard the word "witchcraft".
"What?" she questioned.
Devine laughed. She smirked and said, "Look behind you."
Both Alicia and Gordon turned around and to their surprise, they saw Chloe standing behind them. There was blood on her hands and on her dress. She had a knife with her. She was drooling and she stared at them with rage in her eyes.
"Chloe," Alicia muttered.
"My parasites never disappoint me," Devine said as she walked nearer to Chloe.
"What do you mean?" Alicia confusingly asked.
"Oh, you did not tell her?" Devine sarcastically asked as she turned to look at Gordon.
Gordon remained silent. Alicia looked at him, waiting for an explanation. However, Gordon did not say anything. He did not move his eyes away from Chloe. He knew that Chloe may attack him again since she did not hesitate to burn them a few moments back. He stared at the knife which she was holding tightly.
Devine approached nearer to Chloe and in a low voice, she ordered, "Push him into his grave."
Chloe started to walk towards Gordon. Fear filled his body and he immediately started to take a few steps backward.
"Chloe, what are you doing?" Alicia spoke. However, Chloe did not listen to her. She did not even look at her mother. She was not her. It was something else inside of her. It was a parasitic spirit.
"Chloe!" Alicia shouted, but, in vain.
She then turned to Devine and with a cracking voice, she asked, "What did you do to my daughter?"
Devine pressed her lips together and spoke, "Well, since you do have time before you die, I can give you a sort of a summary about what happened to your daughter, old hag."
She smirked. Alicia watched her with disgust and tears started to roll down her cheeks.
"Oh no! Not again," Devine rolled her eyes. "Everytime I see you, you are in tears. First in the hospital and now here again. I'm fed up with these emotional scenes," she continued.
Alicia was filled with terror. Her body was shivering. On the other hand, Gordon had already reached the hole which was dug by Devine. He turned around and looked at it. It was not too deep. He looked at Chloe who had now lifted her hand with which she was holding the knife.
Would it be the end for him?
