Chapter 26
"What? Clones?" Devine questioned.
"Stop pretending now. I know you've been performing plastic surgery on another person so that he or she would look the same as the dead one," Gordon spoke.
"I did not know this was possible," Devine replied.
Gordon looked at her with confusion. Devine noticed that he was staring at him.
"Oh, I did not use plastic surgery and I did not create any clones," she said.
"Then, why did you bring Chloe's dead body here?" Gordon questioned.
Devine rolled her eyes. "Since you are both going to die, I can tell you my secret," she said as she blinked.
Both Gordon and Drew stared at her. Devine stretched her arms and gestured at Chloe. "Chloe's body is right here," she said.
"She is dead, but, she can be alive again," she continued.
Gordon had enough of her tantrums. He felt irritated. "Get to the point!" he exclaimed.
"Chill out inspector. Why are you hurrying to die?" Devine smirked.
She then turned back to Chloe. "Yeah, so, I was saying, this is not Chloe anymore," she paused.
She then faced Gordon and said, "I call this a habitat. A habitat for a parasite."
Gordon felt lost. He kept on staring at her. She noticed him and she knew that Gordon was not understanding anything she said.
"I know," Devine started, "your brain is not trained to understand what I am saying, but, come on inspector, at least try."
She then turned and watched Drew. "My father will surely understand what I'm trying to say," she said as she stared at him.
Gordon watched Drew. The latter had a tensed look on his face. Devine then walked back to Chloe and stood next to the stretcher.
"This is Chloe's body," she said as she held her wrist.
"I am going to implant a parasite inside of her. And it is not going to be a common one," she continued.
"What are you talking about?" Finally, something came out of Drew's mouth.
"Father, you are acquainted with these things. I inherited them from mother," she said.
Drew's eyes opened wider. "No," he shook his head.
"Yes!" Devine exclaimed as she laughed.
"Mother was good at sorcery and I learnt it from her. I still remember my first time. We stole a baby from the cemetery and I practiced my first ever ritual. Mother was still with me," she said.
Gordon was shocked. "So it was you who stole Veronica's baby?"
The sides of her nose wrinkled and her eyebrows met. "I do not know whose baby it was, but, it was a cute one," she said and her facial expression returned to normal.
"What are you talking about? What do you do with dead bodies? Gordon asked. He was starting to feel irritated.
"I'm talking about something which is parasitic evil. It is the most awesome thing I discovered. You summon a spirit and then you offer it a body in which it will live. It feeds on the body parts. In return, it does whatever you tell it to do. It will do anything. From sweeping your house to sweeping someone's blood," Devine explained. Her eyes were red. She felt proud of her evil act.
Gordon instantly remembered the remark of Dr Adrian. He said that he found holes in the organs of Sabrina's body.
"Shut up! Such things do not exist," Gordon said.
"Ughhh," Devine rolled her eyes.
"I'm pretty sure it exists, inspector. This is what I did to the body of Sabrina," she paused and giggled. "Isn't it funny? Both mother and daughter became my prey," she said.
"I knew it! You had Sabrina the whole time," Gordon exclaimed.
"You are so smart," Devine smirked.
She then turned to Drew. "Aren't you proud of me, father?" she asked sarcastically.
"Aren't you ashamed of doing such despicable acts? How could you steal a dead body and use it for your evil acts?" Drew shouted with anger. He was at first glad and happy to find his daughter, but, not anymore. Hearing about her wrongdoings, he felt disgusted.
"It's a dead body. No one will use it, so, why not me?" Devine replied.
"Enough!" Gordon exclaimed. "I'm tired of your nonsense. Surrender yourself now!" he ordered.
Devine started to laugh loudly. She was amused by Gordon's words. Still laughing, she sarcastically said, "Do you really think I will let you leave from here alive?" She could not hold her laughter.
While laughing, she placed her hands on her waist and tried to calm herself down. She took deep breaths and then stood straight. She shook her head.
She clapped her hands and said, "Enough of stories now." She walked nearer to Gordon and said, "You've been stressing yourself to find the truth since days. Now you know everything. You can die in peace."
After saying this, she walked towards the stretcher on which the body of Chloe was lying down. There was another shelf behind the stretcher. Devine walked towards it and from the top shelf, she grabbed a small bottle. It was filled with a liquid. She took the bottle and stood beside the bed. She opened it and spilled some of the liquid all over the body of Chloe.
Drew and Gordon did not know what she was doing. They tried to free themselves, but, it was impossible. The ropes were too tightly attached. Suddenly, a strong bad smell aroused. It was coming from the body of Chloe. Gordon recognised that smell. He came across it when he found Sabrina. Her body had the same smell too. The only difference was that it was stronger now. Devine was still standing beside the bed and she kept on staring at the body and her lips were moving. She was whispering something. A few seconds passed. She slowly took a few steps back from the bed.
Gordon and Drew watched her without questioning anything. The atmosphere was cold and they had goosebumps on their skin. Suddenly, Chloe sat up on the bed. Gordon gasped.
Her eyes were opened and she looked straight. Her skin was pale and her body was shivering.
"Chloe!" Gordon called out.
Alas, she gave no response. She was staring straight.
"Chloe is dead. Her body now belongs to a parasitic spirit," Devine said aloud.
She then approached the bed. Chloe was still looking straight. Her body had stopped shivering. She was now sitting on the bed like a normal human. Gordon watched her with amazement. It was the first time that he experienced such an action. He never believed in supernatural activities. However, he happened to see one occurring in front of him. He had questions. Questions that could not be answered. Drew froze on his seat. He felt his heart beat increasing. His past was back and this time it was worst. He could see his wife in the place of his daughter. Terror filled his body. He felt all the pain that he endured thirty years ago hitting him again.
Devine handed the box of matchsticks to Chloe. The latter grabbed it silently with her eyes still fixed straight.
"Finish them," Devine muttered in her ears.
As a reaction to her words, Chloe led out a growl.
Devine's eyebrows were furrowed. She was determined to continue with her evil actions. She had no regret. She gazed at Drew, her own father with anger. Drew watched her with despair. Drew wished his daughter would at least once try to understand that she was wrong, but, Devine was too engrossed and obsessed with sorcery, just like her mother once was.
Devine started to walk towards the staircase to the right. Before mounting the stairs, she turned back to get a final look of his father. She still had a soft corner for him, but, her hatred and her thirst for revenge was bigger. She climbed upstairs.
Gordon and Drew were left with Chloe in the garage. They were drenched with kerosene.
"What was that?" Gordon questioned Drew.
However, for the first time, Drew did not answer him. He was more concentrated on Chloe. Gordon turned his face and fear filled his body when he saw Chloe standing on the stretcher. A few moments before she was sitting. She was now standing and she had a lit up matchstick in between her thumb and her index finger. She fixed her eyes at them. Her face was so pale that the veins on her face were visible.
"Chloe, calm down," Gordon tried to stop her.
"She will not listen to you. This is not Chloe. It is something else," Drew talked.
"Whatever it is! Stop it!" Gordon yelled with despair.
Before Drew could reply, the ground caught fire. They felt a sudden heat. Chloe had thrown the ignited matchstick on the ground. The fire encircled them and it was slowly getting closer to their chairs. Chloe stood on the bed and watched them.
