Chapter 20
Gordon looked at Chloe and he saw fear in her eyes. He slowly put the gun away from her sight. Devine was still standing with her hands placed behind her head.
When Gordon had put down his weapon, Devine led out a sigh of relief. She lowered her hands slowly.
"What's wrong?" she innocently asked.
"Where were you? Why was Chloe not in her room? Where did you take her to?" Gordon questioned.
Devine furrowed her eyebrows and sarcastically replied, "Excuse me, I'm a nurse. I have works to do."
"Weren't you supposed to be looking after your patient?" Veronica interfered. She was standing near Chloe.
"Yes, but, since we are low on workers today, I'm handling other things at the same time," Devine explained.
"But where did you bring Chloe?" Gordon repeated his question. He still had his gun in his hand.
"I brought her nowhere. I was outside helping a colleague. When I was returning, I saw her walking towards the backyard. I followed her and it seemed like she was sleepwalking." Devine explained in defense.
"Why didn't you bring her back to her room?" Gordon asked suspiciously.
"I woke her up and she was confused. She didn't know where she was. So we sat in the backyard and I talked to her. I allowed her to stay outside because I thought she might feel suffocated if I bring her inside again," Devine continued.
Gordon looked at Chloe. She was nodding her head. Her eyes were widely opened.
Gordon didn't know if he should believe Devine or not. Hence, he once wanted to confirm with Chloe.
"Is she telling the truth?" he asked.
Chloe nodded in agreement. Gordon bit his upper lip and turned to face Devine. "I'm sorry," he apologised.
Devine simply shrugged and said, "Chloe needs to rest. I'll take her back to her room."
She then walked nearer to Chloe and grabbed her arm to lead her to the room. Gordon watched them walking away.
"For some reason, I feel something is not normal with this woman," Gordon said in a low voice.
"You mean Devine?" Veronica asked.
Gordon nodded.
"Let it be now. She does look a bit strange, but, since Chloe herself confirmed that she was telling the truth, we have nothing to fear," Veronica calmly explained to Gordon.
Gordon agreed with her and decided to ignore the weird feeling he had against Devine.
In the meantime, the elevator again opened and this time, the doctor walked out of it with a few papers in his hands.
He noticed Gordon and Veronica who were still standing in front of the elevator.
"I got the address," he announced.
"Nevermind doc, they are back," Gordon informed.
The doctor stood there and simply watched them. "They are back?" he asked.
"Yes, Devine said that she saw Chloe sleepwalking in the backyard and they were sitting there the whole time," Veronica explained.
The doctor raised his eyebrow and said, "Well, that's very unprofessional. Devine usually informs me whenever something like this happened with any patient."
"It's okay. The point was to find Chloe and we found her. Let's not drag the issue," Veronica added.
"You're right," the doctor approved and continued, "I'll probably conduct a small check-up on Chloe," the doctor said.
Both Veronica and Gordon nodded and then all three of them made their way to the room.
While opening the door of the room, they heard Alicia saying, "I was so scared."
They walked inside and saw Alicia and Chloe pulling themselves out of a hug. Chloe was not talking. Her facial expression was normal. Alicia had finally stopped crying and she had a small smile on her face.
Alicia was holding Chloe's hands. Suddenly, she furrowed her eyebrows.
"Why are your hands so cold?" she asked.
"Umm, it was a bit chilly outside," instantly, Devine replied.
The doctor walked inside the room and approached Chloe. Veronica and Gordon waited at the door itself so that the room would not be crowded. The doctor placed his hands in Chloe's forehead.
"You are indeed cold. How do you feel?" he asked.
Chloe gave no response. she just watche them all with big eyes.
"I would suggest you to take rest. I will examine you in a few minutes," the doctor said.
"Examine? For what?" Devine questioned.
"I have to carry out an overall checkup to see if she is completely fine," the doctor explained.
"But, she looks normal," Devine continued.
"Exactly. She was so mentally ill yesterday. How did she become normal all of a sudden? I really need to study her case again. Just like she suddenly recovered, she can fall ill again at the same speed at which she recovered," the doctor explained.
"What does this mean?" Gordon asked with confusion.
"She has been psychologically affected. It is not possible to be cured so fast. Yesterday she was not in a good state at all and today she is suddenly acting normal, which is good. However, she will endure another anxiety attack again. It can happen anytime and she will be in the same state as she was yesterday," the doctor explained clearly.
Everyone was focusing on him as he spoke.
"Please, do everything possible to help my daughter recover completely," Alicia requested.
The doctor nodded and said, "I would suggest everyone to leave her alone and let her rest. Meanwhile I will prepare for her examination."
"Okay, but, I'm not leaving from here," Alicia said with concern.
The doctor thought for a second. "Well, there is a small cafeteria on ground floor. You can wait there and grab something to eat. You've been here since the morning. You can take some rest there. I will call you when my job is done," he suggested.
All of them agreed.
"Devine," the doctor called out. "Can you please take them to the cafeteria?" he requested.
"Sure," Devine nodded. She then walked to the door and held it open. She waited for them to move out of the room. Gordon was the last person to walk out. Before going out, he noticed that Chloe was looking at Devine. The latter blinked at her.
Something strange was going on, but, what? Gordon couldn't figure it out.
He walked out and Devine followed him. She closed the door behind her and led them to the elevator.
When they reached on the ground floor, they had to walk some distance more into the building and soon, they reached a quite large space which was connected to the hospital itself. It was a well-constructed cafeteria. There were tables and chairs in the middle of the area. Some of the tables were occupied by nurses and doctors who were busy eating.
Devine turned to face them and said, "You can order something to eat and relax here."
"Thank you," Alicia gave her a smile.
She nodded. "Does any of you have a pen?" she asked.
"Yes, why?" Gordon asked.
"Lend it to me please," Devine requested.
Gordon took out a blue pen from his pocket and gave it to her. Devine took the pen and turned to Alicia. "Show me your hand," she said.
Alicia reluctantly placed her hand forward. Devine grabbed her hand and wrote a number on her palm.
"This is my number. If you need something, give me a call and I'll reach here," she said as she returned Gordon the pen.
Gordon took back his pen and asked, "Where are you going?"
"I'll be with the doctor. He might need my help," Devine replied. She didn't look into the face of Gordon as she talked. After answering his question, she turned around and walked away from them. Gordon watched her leave.
"I'm hungry. Let's eat something," Alicia suggested.
Gordon looked at her. "I'll join you in a few minutes," he said and put back the pen in his pocket.
He then walked to a corner of the large room, leaving Miguel, Veronica and Alicia behind. He removed his phone from his pocket and called Drew. The latter answered the call instantly.
"What is the situation?" Gordon questioned.
"We are still waiting sir. It is getting dark now and no one came into the cemetery till now," Drew explained.
"Do you think he will come?" Gordon asked.
"I don't know sir. We will have to wait to find out," Drew replied.
"Right, well, stick to the plan," Gordon said.
"Yes sir. What about Chloe?" Drew asked.
"We found her," Gordon informed.
"Great! Where was she?" Drew asked.
"Apparently, she walked in her sleep and reached to the backyard of the hospital. She was with a nurse," Gordon narrated.
"Oh, thankfully the nurse was with her," Drew said.
"Yeah, but, I find that nurse strange," Gordon pointed out.
"Strange? Why?" Drew asked.
"I don't know, but, I just feel like she was lying. She said she found Chloe sleepwalking. Can it be possible for a sick person to sleepwalk from first floor to ground floor. There were so many people in this hospital, yet, no one noticed Chloe except her," Gordon explained.
"Uhmmm, you are right. You should keep an eye on her," Drew said.
"That's what I'm trying to do," Gordon replied.
