Chapter 18
It had been only around one hour or less since Gordon and Drew were hiding at the back of the cemetery. They both focused their eyes on the screen of the laptop and they paid close attention to any activities taking place in the burial ground.
Suddenly, two persons entered the cemetery. They all stayed alert. The policemen hiding inside the cemetery took out their guns and aimed at them. Drew zoomed in the footage to get a closer look at the two persons who entered the cemetery. They were men. One of them was carrying a small bouquet of roses. They were walking towards the grave in which the police had just buried the body. Gordon bent towards the laptop and watched closely as he held his breath. His heart pounded faster.
The two men reached nearer to the grave. However, they passed across it and walked towards the grave that was in front of it. The two man knelt in front of the other grave and placed the roses on top of it.
Gordon released his breath. When the two guy entered the cemetery, he thought he was close to the culprit. His heart had already started to dance with joy. He thought he was going to solve this case. Alas, his hope was shattered. The two men were just there to visit the grave of their deceased one. Gordon watched them leaving the flowers on the tomb and walking out of the burial ground.
The policemen inside the cemetery put down their weapons and patiently, they continued their wait.
Gordon closed his eyes for a few seconds and a few seconds after, his phone started to vibrate. He took a look at the screen. The call was from an unsaved number, but, Gordon knew who it was. It was the number of Alicia. He picked it up.
"Hello," he spoke.
He heard sobs. He furrowed his eyebrows and waited for a response.
"Chloe...." Alicia talked. Her voice was heavy.
"What happened?" Gordon asked with worry.
"Chloe has disappeared," Alicia sobbed.
Gordon's eyes opened wide with shock. His forehead ceased.
"What? What do you mean?" he asked. Drew looked at Gordon with confusion.
"She is nowhere to be found! We searched everywhere!" Alicia panicked.
"Okay, calm down–"
"How can I calm down right now! My daughter is nowhere to be found. She is sick!" Alicia cried over the phone.
"–Alicia, get a hold on yourself, okay, I'm coming," Gordon said and then hung up the phone call.
"Shit!" he sighed as he immediately opened the door and stepped out.
"What's the matter?" Drew shouted.
Gordon bent to look at Drew through the window. "It was a call from Alicia. Her daughter has disappeared from the hospital."
Drew was shocked by the news. "We should go and search for her!" he immediately said.
"No, stay here and stick to the plan. I'll go and look into the matter," Gordon said and without wasting further time, he rushed to his jeep that was parked behind a few trees.
He jumped into the vehicle and drove out of his hiding spot. He made his way to the hospital. He was driving at full speed. He didn't even stop at red lights. While driving, the sobs of Alicia lingers through his head.
In about only ten minutes, Gordon had reached the hospital. He rushed into the building and made his way to the first floor and to the room where Chloe was admitted. As he walked towards the room, he didn't see anyone outside. The hallway was empty. He rushed into the room and he saw Alicia sitting on the bed, next to Veronica. It was the truth, Chloe was nowhere to be seen.
Alicia was crying her heart out. Gordon took small steps towards them. Once he reached in front of them, he asked, "How did it happen?"
Alicia gave no response. She couldn't talk. Her tears were unstoppable. Gordon knelt down and grabbed her arms.
"How did it happen?" he asked again.
However, Alicia was not in a state of answering questions. She kept on crying.
"I'll tell you how it happened," Veronica said and stood up. "Let's leave Alicia alone for a few minutes," she said and then started to walk towards the door.
Gordon grabbed the hands of Alicia and rubbed them. He then got up and went behind Veronica. The latter was waiting for him outside. She stood and leaned against the wall. Gordon stood in front of her and asked, "Did you search everywhere?"
Veronica nodded and said, "We checked the whole building."
Gordon placed his hands on his waist.
"I went out to take some fresh air. When I came back, Alicia and Miguel had fallen asleep right here on this bench," Veronica narrated as she pointed at the bench that was to her right.
She then continued, "Since I saw the nurse who was supposed to look after Chloe outside the hospital, I thought Chlo–"
"The nurse was outside?" Gordon interrupted her.
"–Yes, she was shifting a body into an ambulance," she answered.
"Continue," Gordon instructed.
"Yeah, I thought it would be wise to stay with Chloe until the nurse would return. When I entered the room, Chloe was not there. I searched everywhere inside, but, I didn't find her. I then hurried out and woke Miguel and Alicia up," Veronica continued.
"Where is Miguel?" Gordon questioned.
"He went with the doctor to check the CCTV footage of the hospital to see if they can find Chloe," she replied.
"And you said the nurse was shifting a body into an ambulance," Gordon pointed out.
Veronica nodded.
Gordon raised an eyebrow and asked, "Did you see the body?"
"No, it was covered with a–" Veronica was speaking, but, she stopped suddenly. She stared into the eyes of Gordon who was also fixing his eyes at her. Her lips parted and a flashback played in her head. She remembered how the nurse was behaving rudely when she was offering her help. She remembered how the nurse refused her help and she had stopped her from touching the body. Her pupil dilated as the scenes played in her mind.
Still staring at Gordon with big eyes, she shakily asked, "Oh my God, could it be her?"
Gordon observed her and raised an eyebrow, "Why do you think it can be her?"
"Because she was not letting me touch the body!" Veronica exclaimed loudly.
Gordon was still confused. He now raised both eyebrows and stared at her. Veronica understood that she was not being clear to him, so, she decided to explain everything that happened when she went out of the hospital.
"Listen," she started. Her eyes were widely opened. "I went outside to take some fresh air. I saw the nurse. She was struggling to shift a body from a...uhmmm...how do we call that thing?"
Gordon simply stared at her, waiting for her to continue.
Veronica's mind was very disturbed. "The bed that we can push. We use in hospitals to move patients," she explained as she stared in the eyes of Gordon.
"A stretcher," Gordon said.
"Yes!" she exclaimed and continued, "She was alone and I thought she needed help, so, I approached her and tried to help her, but, as soon as I was going to touch the body, she freaked out. She yelled at me and she was rude."
Veronica was panting.
Gordon had now understood why she doubted the nurse. He was suspicious too. "What happened next?"
"I don't know. She reacted in a creepy manner and I felt scared. It was a bizarre feeling. I rushed back inside and that's when I found out Chloe was missing from her room," Veronica spoke as she held her breath.
"Have you seen the nurse after that?" Gordon asked.
"No. The ambulance is not here either," she answered.
"Then we need to find her. Where is the doctor?" Gordon asked.
"On ground floor," Veronica replied.
Gordon bit his lips and then tapped Veronica on her shoulder. "Stay with Alicia," he ordered and then made his way to the elevator.
Veronica watched him hurrying to the elevator. She could feel her heart pounding really fast. She swallowed a lump of saliva and took a heavy breath. She then headed back to the room in which Alicia was sitting. She mustered up all her strength to support her old friend who was completely shattered.
