Honor Bound
"It's natural to be excited on your purity day." Anthea said noticing the shaking of Selene's hands.
"I feel like I'm going to throw up." Selene said as Anthea pulled the corset tightly.
"Not if I have anything to say about it. This day is all about you and I won't let anything spoil it for you." Anthea promised before heading to the walk-in closet and reaching for the blue ball gown.
Selena stepped into the gown as lady Anthea helped her put it on. "What if my creature doesn't show?" Selene asked.
"Oh, don't you worry about that. It's your sixteenth birthday and the Unicorn is honor bound to show." Anthea winked.
"What was it like when you got your unicorn?"
"Oh, it was such a pretty white creature." Anthea said. "His beauty struck me so that I was frozen in place, I almost didn't follow him."
"Were you worried that you wouldn't like where he led you?"
"Is that what this is about love? You scared about meeting your future husband?"
"Only if the Unicorn is white." I said but who was I kidding? Ninety-five percent of the unicorns were the color of marriage. Selene silently recited the poem that every girl of the village knew by heart.
If the unicorn is white, there is a husband in sight. If the unicorn is plum, a Queen, she shall become. If the unicorn is blue, the life of a priestess will have to do. If the unicorn is pink, she shall teach children to think. If the unicorn is green, nature is hers to clean. If the unicorn be black...
"I'm sure it will be white." Anthea interrupted Selene's thoughts.
"I can't imagine any of the boys in town making me happy." Selene sighed. "I can only hope that the unicorn that finds me is blue, pink, or green."
"On these matters, the creatures know our hearts even better than us." Anthea reassured. "He will lead you to the right path."
Selene nodded at lady Anthea. Of course, she was right, but Selene had a nagging feeling that her life would change this night she just wasn't sure the change would be good.
Selene felt like a princess in the luxurious blue gown as she danced with every member of the village. Excited hushed murmurs befell the village as the dancers noticed rustling in the trees beyond. A set of blue eyes watched the revelers from his spot among the trees. The crowd parted until Selene stood alone in the clearing waiting for the unicorn that would lead to her destiny. A loud gasp escaped from the crowd as the unicorn stepped out of the woods.
"No!" Anthea cried. "I won't let you follow it!"
"I am honor bound." Selene said as she followed the unicorn to her destiny. Selene breathed a sigh of relief for she would not have to marry after all. For if the unicorn is black then death has welcomed you back.
