Dedicated to chalenaa

Introduction -

So, you guys might have heard of Black Magic from some films. But, would you believe me if I say that a whole village in India has been practicing black magic for centuries? Probably not. I mean who would.

About the place -

In North-East India, situated in the state of Assam, there is a village named Mayong. It lies on the bank of the river Brahmaputra, approximately 40 km from the city of Guwahati. It is an untouched and secluded village. The name 'Mayong' is a Sanskrit word meaning 'Maya', in English it means 'illusion'.

History -

Just like a rich guy passes his wealth to his next generation, the village passes its magic teachings to its next generation. It is said that the Mayong village can do many types of magic and they use their magic for both good and bad work. If we search Mayong village's history, we can say that the culture of magic has been going on for almost 100 years.

Mayong finds its mention in the mythological epic Mahabharata, along with Pragjyotishpura (ancient Assam). Legend has it that Chief Ghatotkacha took part in the battle of Mahabharata after attaining different magical powers from Mayong.

If we listen to here and there rumors from the people of the village, then in 1337, a group of tantriks (people who practice magic in India) defeated Muhammad Shah's 100,000 horsemen. They disappeared near Mayong due to black magic and witchcraft and not a single trace was left behind.

Not only this, in 1667, Aurangzeb ordered his general, Raja Ram Singh, to go and capture the state of Assam. But when the general came to know about the village they were scared to attack it. Since he was ordered to attack, they attacked it anyway and lost many soldiers in the way. In 1671, they lost the war and after that, no one saw the general. If we listen to the people, the tantriks used a lot of black magic in that war and others too. This was also the reason why no one could stand in front of them.

Now guys, if you listen to others they would say that these sayings are highly manipulated and the reason they won all these wars is because of their hard work. But some people still say that these winnings were all because of black magic. Now, which one of these is true we don't quite really know.

Paranormal Facts

If we talk about the village, then many historians came to this village for research. After unearthing many places, they found some blades which were used for human sacrifices. Due to this, they thought that many decades ago in Mayong, human sacrifices were also done. Narbali or human sacrifices are only done for black magic. In this practice, as a part of the rituals of worshipping Goddess Shakti, humans were sacrificed to attain various powers of black magic.

Other than this, many stories are famous in Mayong about the magic done by their ancestors. According to people, their ancestors can take the form of animals. They can control animals like tigers or lions. They can even fly and disappear in thin air. For doing all these things, the tantriks would use different mantras (spells). Like Uran Mantra, Lokkhi Mantra, etc. I know these things are unbelievable. But for the Mayong people, these stories and things mean a lot to them.

Now, if we talk about the good things done by magic, there are many doctors in Mayong as well, often known as bez or ojaa. By doctors I don't mean by degree, I meant that these are magical healers. They even say that they can heal many years of pain in only a few minutes. For that to do, they use bronze plates which they easily stick to your bareback. Other than these, they can heal broken bones and diseases. In case a person is suffering from severe pain, the plate would then overheat and smash onto the ground.

A vast majority of the population of Mayong knows and practices black magic. There are palm-readers in Mayong who say they can predict your whole future by just reading your palm lines. Some of the people here work as fortune-tellers and claim to predict a person's future using seashells and broken glass pieces. According to the local people, when someone loses their possession, they go to the doctor, who places a flower inside a metal bowl and starts chanting mantras. With magic, the bowl starts moving on its own on the ground, all the way to the place where the lost item is kept.

The Mayong people take very much pride in their magic. Many walls in the village have inscriptions that were written by their ancestors. There are many books also written by their ancestors. These books talk about black magic and witchcraft and many more. The people say that their ancestors always have teachings in verbal form so that these powers don't get in the wrong hands.

The Black Magic is also used to do bad things. Most common are to control someone or harm them in some way. The tantriks say that they have many weapons and mantras but they can never control something natural like weather change, flood, etc.

Conclusion -

Many people have tried to come up with some conclusive evidence about all these things but they couldn't find any. Meaning they couldn't prove that these all were real nor they can deny it. Researchers say that the practices of Mayong village should be preserved so that when people from around the world can understand their culture and heritage. They also said that these practices also have some scientific limits which they can study.

Due to its mysterious past and black magic, Mayong is gradually turning into a tourist spot. If you're a curious traveler, adventure lover, history buff, or are simply fascinated by black magic, Mayong can be an interesting place to check out. All of the practices and witchcraft of the Mayong are preserved in the Mayong Central Museum and Emporium. This Museum is located in Guwahati.
