15 - Over Coffee
Three months passed and living single again was starting to become normal again. There was still traces of Arson around the house that made my heart skip a beat (like socks that were in the wash, underwear, soap, aftershave...) but other than that, I was still okay with everything. I was able to work later hours to help with cases and I was getting more cases because I was able to focus now.
That is until I got a call from Liam...
***********************
I had just finished doing some extensive research for a case I was handling and was feeling really good when the phone rang. I picked it up and answered, moving my stuff to my briefcase.
"Jane Channing..."
"Jane, it's Liam. You need to come to the hospital right now."
"Why?" I asked, confused and a bit agitated.
"It's Arson. He had a horrible asthma attack."
"I thought I gave you all the inhalers?" I said, frowning.
"You did but he had a terrifying nightmare and started to hyperventilate. He had the inhaler next to him but I think he was so scared that he knocked it off of the bed and began to have an attack. I wasn't here though and he almost died. He's calling for you, Jane."
"Why should I go? He seems perfectly content with this arrangement." I said, wanting to go but after everything he's done...
"Please, Jane, help him. He is miserable without you. Do you know how much he screams for you in the night? He yells for you, keens. Please help him..."
I kneaded the bridge of my nose. I didn't really know if it was just a ploy to get me to help or something but I believed Liam and found myself replying to him.
"Alright... Your hospital?"
"Yes."
I nodded and grabbed my keys and purse. What was I thinking?
I found the floor Arson was on and found Chandler and Liam talking. Chandler glared at me and I hissed at him. Liam turned to me.
"You came..."
"Of course... How is he?"
"The doctor said that he was without oxygen to his brain for a pretty good while. We're not sure if he'll wake up from the coma or not."
"Coma?"
"Yeah. Your stupid alien baby is making him have nightmares and they scared him so bad he went into an asthmatic coma from no oxygen to his brain." Chandler growled.
I whipped around and pointed my finger in his face.
"This is your brother's fault. All his own. If he has waited just a little longer, none of this would have been happening. I'm sorry if your niece/nephew will be half alien but I will not have you blaming me for everything. I'm tired of being blamed for this... It's not my fault."
Chandler didn't seem fazed but didn't say another word to me.
I turned back to Liam.
"Why am I here?" I asked, wondering that myself.
"Because he's your husband."
"Kind of..." I corrected.
"Oh, save it Jane." Chandler growled. I turned to him. "You're so stupid! Like he'd really forget you. He's loved you ever since you saved him from dying on your front lawn. All those years you were apart, when that Tabitha chick wasn't around he was always talking about you, wondering if you remembered him and if he did the right thing. The idiot is still in love with you."
"Then why blame me?"
"I blame you for him getting him pregnant not him raping you. I beat him up when I heard about it. Jeez, I'm not that heartless, Jane."
"You should know that Arson isn't really the best person to go about doing things." Liam said. "I have a feeling that he wanted a divorce because of what he did to you, not what you did to him. He knows that you warned him about a consequence and he feels that leaving you would spare you."
"God, how dumb is he?" I said, shaking my head. "I don't really believe you but it sounds like something he would do."
"Just go in there and talk to him. It would make things a little easier..."
I rolled my eyes but walked into the hospital room.
*******************
Arson was hooked to a breathing machine and his stomach was protruding from under the sheets. His eyes were flickering under his eyelids as if he was thinking. I walked over to him and sighed, touching his hand just a little. He latched on and I tried to pull away. He moaned a little, gripping me tighter. I sighed and decided to sit by him.
"Look, I don't know what you're trying to do here but you're confusing me to no end. Do you want me or do you loathe me? I'm trying to give you what you want and yet you keep making come back to you."
"Jane..." I heard him muffle softly.
I moved the oxygen mask and he moaned, turning.
"Jane?"
"Yes?"
"Jane..."
I moved my mouth. He's just mumbling in his sleep... I got up and left the room.
"I think he's alright now." I told them. "He's talking in his sleep."
Liam smiled but frowned when I started to leave.
"Where are you going?"
"I have a big case that I'm preparing for. I need some sleep. Text me if he wakes up or something."
He nodded and I went back home.
I packed up my briefcase to go to the court house when Nieba stopped me in the doorway.
"Mrs. Channing, you have a visitor."
"Tell them they will have to come back later. I'm on my way to court."
"Alright but you should have taken it now..." she sang.
I ignored her and went to court, meeting my partner in the car.
"You ready to bust this case up?" Lawrence, my first chair, asked.
"I've been looking up everything I could find. I think we've got this."
He nodded and we headed to the courthouse.
*********************
We won the case and I went back to the office to have Nieba process my information.
"How did it go?" she asked as I handed her the folders.
"Amazing! Lawrence was awesome and the case was won with hardly a blink. I was so happy!"
"I'm glad you won."
"Anyhow, process those for me please."
"Sure thing."
I nodded and went into my office to grab some things.
I turned the light on and headed to my desk.
"You must have had a big case today."
I gasped and looked up.
"Arson!"
"This is a comfy couch..."
"What are you doing here?" I growled, leaning on the table. "Haven't you caused enough trouble?"
"You must have had a big case; you only wear that suit when you're ready to make a strike." He said with a smirk.
"What do you want?"
"I came to see if you had signed the divorce papers yet. I gave them to you over four months ago and I haven't seen them since. Are you trying to push it aside?"
"I was hoping to push it out of the way but if you're so desperate for it..."
"Thank you, Cappadocia."
"What?"
Arson sat up, holding his bulging stomach as he did.
"I thought I was gone for a while. I heard your voice and it pulled me back home."
"Well that's what happens when you push your inhaler off the bed."
Arson smiled at me and I moved around the desk.
"What are you really here for? You don't look like you're trying to get the divorce papers back."
"Well, I've had a lot of time to think about everything and I've come to the conclusion that I was wrong. Of course everyone else knew that but drinking half of my life kind of destroyed a bit of my brain cells. You should know that some things don't connect as fast as they should." He said, pointing to his head.
I crossed my arms. "Are you trying to blame drinking for raping me?"
"No. I blame myself. You're right, I should have trusted you and waited. Now I'm stuck with this baby and no job."
"No job?"
"I was out for so long with no real reason (to them) as to why I was gone, so I was let go."
"And now you're crawling back because I'm loaded?"
"That hurts, Cappadocia. I'm not that shallow."
"Then what is it?"
"I came back for you."
"Me?"
"Yup... I need you, Jane. I didn't realize how much so until the nightmares started. Things- horrible things- happened in them and I was always all alone. There was some grotesque stuff in those nightmares."
"Liam told me you screamed at night."
"It was always for you."
I looked at my husband (or whatever he called himself) and noticed there was a certain charm he was displaying.
"Are you alright?" I asked.
"Perfectly." He said, getting up. "I just missed you, is all."
Something was out of the ordinary here as he got up and walked over to me. He pressed me against the desk and ran his fingers down my face.
"I never did ask the question as to why your eyes are so blue."
"B-b-because they're like the ocean. The light reflects off of them in the same manner, causing them to have a blue color... Um..."
"Hmm..." was all he said as he pressed closer to me.
"Arson, what are you doing?"
"I haven't seen you in so long..." he whispered.
"That's by your choice, not mine." I whispered back.
He grinned that grin of his and ran his nose along my jaw line.
"Cappadocia..."
"Really, Arson? In my office?"
"I can't do anything to you right now. I wish I could though. I throw you on the table and find out what underwear that ass of yours is hiding under." He answered gruffly, nipping my ear a little.
I hated him for being so damn hot and I hated him for always being able to pull me in with sweet nothings. But I remembered that this was part of the pregnancy of the Maclara. They get extra horny for some reason...
"You know this is a pregnancy thing, right? What if it passes and you wish I'd signed the papers?"
"What papers?" he growled, leaning me over the table.
"These..." I said, putting my finger on them.
Arson looked at them and grabbed them, getting off of me. He looked at me for a moment and then tore them in half.
"We don't need no stinking papers." He said with a smirk of satisfaction. "All I need is you."
"How can I trust you?"
"Truth or dare, Jane?"
"Truth."
"I've done damage to you and to us but I swear to you on this day that I will be by your side and never try to fracture us again. I will swear on the life of our child."
I smiled a little and winked at him.
"Fair enough... That couch is more comfier though."
He lifted an eyebrow and I pushed him back, making him lay down on the couch as I caressed him with kisses.
"Mrs. Channing- OH MY GOD!"
I snapped my head up and glared at Nieba and she grinned.
"Never mind." Was all she said as she left the room.
So I guess Arson's coming home with me. Things never seemed to stay the same here...
