xxix: reassure
"I'm sorry; You expect me to what?" Fuyuka was in disbelief at what she was hearing over the phone.
"You heard me, Kudou. Dr. Ishida requested this the other day. That patient you've been catering for the past three years is clogging up the other patients who need that room. I don't care how much they're paying you. Get rid of him."
"I can't just do that!" Fuyuka retaliates, trying to hide her anger. "You of all people should know how I value the lives of my patients! I'm not going to put your priorities over someone who has a chance to live!"
"Honestly, that patient has been in that state since 2003. Besides... you of all people should know that he'll die anyway."
"But-!"
"Enough. Put the new medicine in his I.V. It's about time he dies anyway. His medicine's near the bathroom. You know, the one with the vents."
"You can't-!" The line was cut off before Fuyuka could retaliate. There was no way that his former doctor would request to kill him. And this goes against her morals; While she wants to keep the patient alive because he did show signs of responding, she can't exactly disobey her superiors.
She'll be killing someone if she even thinks of following those orders of murder.
Fuyuka found this unnerving... and also suspicion. She would have known if Dr. Ishida had told them about a change or addition in his medication. While Fuyuka never doubted the doctor's orders, this was the one time that she had an immense feeling of unease.
She grabs her phone from her bag and goes through her contacts; Dr. Ishida was on top of her emergency list and she decides to contact him. Sure, it was... understandably late and he was already at home by this time, she needed to confirm it. There was no way that he added new medication this late...
"Hello, Ishida speaking."
Fuyuka sighed in relief. "Sorry to bother you at this hour, Dr. Ishida. I just need to ask something about your former patient."
There was silence before letting out a sigh. "I thought I already told you that I already gave your supervisor the list. My son Uryu should be coming there tomorrow for his new medication."
"Uhm... that's the thing. My supervisor called saying that they already have the medication." Fuyuka says to him, sounding nervous. And it heightened when she realizes that Ryūken hadn't said a word. "...Dr. Ishida?"
"Check the medicine, if that's alright."
Fuyuka sighed in relief, her suspicions confirmed. "Okay. Don't hang up, if that's alright?" She asks before heading over to the bathrooms. There was a vent just right outside the men's restroom. That vent was usually used for deliveries, whether it be medicine or food. Fuyuka opened the vent, taking out a plastic bag.
Emepronium Bromide was in bold, and underneath it were the words, "kill patient 190".
"...Dr. Ishida, you aren't using Emepronium Bromide, right?"
"...get the name of your supervisor. I'm having a word with her."
"Oh, uhm, of course, Dr. Ishida! I-I'll send it to you!"
"And thank you for informing me," Ryūken lets out a sigh. "I'm glad that there are nurses who still genuinely care for their patients. I'll come by and visit next week once I get a word with your supervisor."
"Thank you," Even though Ryūken couldn't see it, Fuyuka was smiling softly. "I'm glad that I can help."
Ryūken ends the call and Fuyuka lets out the biggest sigh of relief. But her work wasn't done yet. She goes back to her contacts, scrolling down until she sees that familiar name.
Kira Hitomiko.
Hitomiko didn't care if Takeomi or Kisaki was going to punish her. Things were starting to get too far. Not only did she hear that Kisaki was planning on killing Shinichiro, she also heard that Kisaki was the reason for the sudden transfer. While she did have pity for her fiancé—scratch that—ex-fiancé, she absolutely wanted to throw him into the ground.
Her grip on the steering wheel is tight as she drives to the hospital. There was a feeling of rage, something she had kept hidden just to please her father's wishes. But this time? Hitomiko was done. Done with the act, done with the lies, done with this bullshit that life had given her.
Hitomiko was going to get her life back.
She parks the car once she reaches the hospital, getting out of there and quickly ran inside the building.
The hallways seemed too wide, unlike whenever she visited with Takeomi. The halls used to be so narrow, and yet now, they were wide and long.
The elevator wasn't an option; People would come in and out and recognize her. The stairs were much risker since it would be the staff that would recognize her.
'Screw this,' Hitomiko gritted her teeth as she starts running up the stairs, the clacking of her heels echoing through the even narrow halls.
She could hear footsteps from above, like someone was trying to get there before she could. While Hitomiko gave the benefit of the doubt that the people above were the staff, she was also scared that whoever was above her would the ones to end Shinichiro's life.
Hitomiko stops in her tracks when she hears a loud thud.
"Fuck! My heel broke! Go on without me, I'm going to fix this."
Hitomiko didn't run this time as she goes up the stairs. She remembered years ago, that her younger brother always broke the sole or heel of his shoe. She'd either have some horse glue on her or just a new pair of shoes. Luckily, she had the former on her since she was wearing heels.
She didn't know what floor was she on, but she did see a man grumbling angrily as he took off one of his boots. "I paid too much shit for this."
"I can help," Hitomiko piped up, making the man look at her. He had grey hair with white-tinted bangs, and his eyes were... a darker teal. Even with that hair and suit, Hitomiko could recognize who that was.
And she believed that the man recognized her too, judging by how wide his eyes were.
