iv. the inevitable fate

If you were to take a stroll in Shibuya, you would normally see small business shops, convenience stores, hotels, and many more. But if you needed... well, a different kind of help—then you would find an unusual shop that was just around the corner. It's not that obvious, really. If you do manage to see the shop then you would know that its traditional design contrasts with the modern architecture of the 21st century.

The shop can only be seen by those who need help or by spirits and monsters of all kinds, especially the bad ones, as the shop is protected by a spiritual barrier that keeps these spirits away. In the eyes of those who do not need help or a desire for help, then they would only see an abandoned building that's adjacent to the property.

This shop is also managed by the Witch of Dimensions, Ichihara Yuuko. She's not alone, however. In fact, she has other people working for her whenever she needed to leave or run a few errands. Not only that, the shop is also a unique one. See, the shop offers to grant wishes in exchange for a payment equal in value to the wish. For example, if you wished for a photo that was haunting you to be "erased", then you could go and wish for it! Just as long as you pay the price... and follow the guidelines so this wouldn't happen again.

Well, people can take one or two hints about their wishes but they can never really be satisfied, can't they?

It was already three in the morning. No one would dare to enter the shop during the Meeting Hours.

The Meeting Hours... well, it's quite simple. From three to six in the morning, the Deities of the Fates would accommodate themselves in Yuuko's shop to talk about their duties.

The First Deity was known as the Fate of Souls. She is the one who gives and takes the souls of living beings alike. It is said that when you die, she is the one who decides whether your soul should be reincarnated, stay in heaven, or sent to hell. She appears when one is about to pass on, and those who have survived death and still saw her was described as a young woman with a gentle demeanor, yet the smile she wears is only a mask for her cold aura. You could recognize her at a glance, with her silver hair flowing against the wind as blue and white kimono come into view. Her golden eyes contradict her appearance, but those eyes will lure you in, either to your new life or down a path of endless pain and suffering. Most people call her an angel. Others call her a embodiment of a flower. But to the other Deities, she is known as Mitama.

The Second Deity was known as the Fate of Memories. He is the one who keeps and forgets the memories of the humans. Sometimes, if you want to look into the deepest parts of your mind, you would be surrounded in smoke. Before you could even react, you would be faced with a man with the head of a crescent moon, his human-like features contradicting his face. You would be caught off-guard, considering that his appearance was out of the ordinary, and he was already a walking contradiction with his all-black suit. The grin on his face would make you feel fear as you go farther into your mindscape. Most call him the memory incarnate. But to only a few, he is called Memory.

The Third Deity was known as the Fate of Dimensions. She is the one who looks over all of the dimensions from each timeline. Whether it be a world filled with peace or a world filled with suffering, it's her job to keep each dimension in balance. Those who even dare change one small thing will suffer the consequences, whether if it was intentional or not. Her appearance  varies for each dimension. For example, in one dimension you would see her in a kimono, but in another dimension you would see her in revealing outfits with hints of traditional motifs. She has three names; The Witch of Space and Time, The Witch of the Far East, and The Witch of Dimensions. But as herself and the other Deities, she is Ichihara Yuuko.

The Fourth Deity was known as the Fate of Blessings and Curses. They are the ones who give the humans their blessings or their punishments, or known as "curses". Only few people can see what they look like. There was one instance where there were identical twins, one was born with powers and the other was not. The twin with powers, surprisingly, suffered greatly and everyone wanted her gone, while the one without lived a normal life and is successful. And funnily enough, the Fourth Deity is connected as one. They are also twins that share the same, the only difference is... well, they both have powers. They are merely known as Keitaku, the female twin with eyes of blood that contradict her gentle expression and the power to grant punishments, and Tatari, the male twin who can never see yet has the power to grant blessings.

The Fifth Deity was known as the Fate of Emotions. This Deity doesn't have a precise gender because emotions are felt by anyone, regardless of who they are. They appear as whatever emotion one would be feeling, mostly when you're asleep. If you fall asleep angry, they will appear to help you ease your mind. They take on different appearances, depending on who they are residing it. They are mostly called as Ryutai.

The Sixth Deity was known as the Fate of Time. His title is self-explanatory: He is the one who fixes the timelines in order to keep the peace. Those who wish to change time will encounter him, and he will either offer you two choices or just tell you what to do right off the bat. But he will warn you, and it will be up to you if you would listen. If you would see him, he would either be in a formal attire with a kiseru or in a black hood carrying a scythe. He is known as Reaper.

The six deities were sitting in a round table while Yuuko's assistants, Maru and Moro were serving tea. They were silent for a while, until Ryutai slams their hand on the desk in a passive-aggressive manner. "Anyone care to explain why we're here again? We just had a meeting two months ago." He says, his tone sounding calm and collected yet his facial expression said otherwise.

Mitama takes a sip from her tea while glancing at Yuuko and Reaper. "Ask the people who caused this mess." She says angrily. "After all, they were the ones who decided to mess with him in the first place."

"Not my problem." Reaper says with a monotone expression.

"Not your problem?" Mitama's tone raises. Memory lets out a sigh while Ryutai covers their ears. "You told him to kill himself and then you asked Yuuko to give him a decision in living! She didn't even get proper payment, she just got a stupid lighter!"

"Mitama-chan..." Tatari pats her shoulder in an attempt to calm her down.

Yuuko just smirks, putting the lighter on the table. Memory was the first one to examine it, a large grin coming onto his face. "Sentimental value and friendship! Oh, that Sano Shinichiro sacrificed his friend's gift just so he could bring back that curse of a brother!" He starts cackling now and Ryutai groans in irritation. "Oh boy, I'm surprised he didn't give up his memories just yet!"

Keitaku was tense, and Yuuko notices. "There's a reason why you asked Mitama to take his soul too late, Keitaku~" Yuuko smirks as she says that. Keitaku sighs, looking away. Reaper just shrugs. "He didn't care even when Yuuko said her piece, so why should we be bothered by this one little setback?" He asks with a raised eyebrow.

"A SETBACK?!" Ryutai shouts at him now. "Reaper, you practically made Mitama give back a soul orb to someone who was supposed to die! You of all people should know that bringing back the dead is a taboo, because you handle those souls that Mitama sends to hell and reincarnation! Are you even going to stop this madness?!" "We already made that Haruchiyo kid suffer, that's already one of the consequences he'll be dealing with." Reaper raises his cup to drink from it. "Besides, consider this payback."

There was a dry laugh coming from Keitaku. "Wow, it's been a century, Reaper. You're still mad about what we did to him?"

Reaper didn't say anything. Memory cackles again. "Oh, good lord! His lover was already reincarnated by Keitaku and you're not over it!"

"Stop it, please. That man is the bane of anyone's existence." Ryutai says with a scoff. "And look, Reaper, that man tried to kill you. And yet you forgive him."

Tatari didn't say anything before sighing. "It was our fault for putting him into that situation, but he should know as the Seventh Deity that his powers are out of control..." He had a wary tone when he trailed off when Reaper glanced at him. "But we have our errors, Reaper. You should've stopped him when you could."

There was silence before Reaper let out a chuckle. "I loved him. How could I stop him?"

"And you're making the same thing happen to Sano Shinchiro and the rest of his friends." Tatari was trying to knock some sense into Reaper. Reaper was a hard one to convince, and would only stand by his own beliefs and occasionally Memory and Yuuko's beliefs. "Even they have people that they hold close."

"Unfortunately, this isn't a setback like Ryutai said." Keitaku gives a glare at Yuuko. "In the words of the Dimension Witch, this was bound to happen."

There was an uncomfortable silence. Yuuko smirks. "I see. Is it because Sano Shinchiro has the curse?"

Keitaku lets out a sigh. "That curse only appears once every one hundred years, and I have no control to whoever has it or not."

"And I have no control to whoever has the ability to break the curse." Tatari added.

Mitama didn't say anything and it was Ryutai who pats her back this time. Memory makes a key in his hand, followed by a box. "I'll keep the lighter, Yuuko. Consider it payment for last year." He says before putting the lighter in the box. "Don't worry! I'll return the change!"

"Finally," Yuuko lets out a chuckle. "a promise you can actually remember."

Reaper just hums. "If that curse is here again... this means I can revive the dead again with no holds barred."

Mitama huffs. "Just make sure that the person you'll revive has a body and isn't buried six feet underground."

"I think I know which human you're referring too." Ryutai groans. "God, their family is another bane of anyone's existence. The Hanma Family... how did they even survive this long?"

Reaper stood up as Moro hands him the scythe. "I'm off. Thanks for the tea, Yuuko. I'll come back with payment soon."

"See you soon." Yuuko watches him walk away before he disappears into a black cloud of smoke.

"We'll take our leave, as well. See you next month, Yuuko." Mitama stood up while the Keitaku and Tatari follow behind. Maru and Moro were taking them to the door. Only Ryutai and Memory remained. Ryutai looks at Yuuko with a sad expression, as if they were worried. "You still love Reaper, don't you?"

Yuuko didn't answer and just turns away. "I don't know what you're talking about."

She walks back inside, leaving the two. Memory chuckles. "Ah, the even us Deities have problems within our own selves. And you want to know the best part?" He looks at Ryutai. "We can never solve them."

Ryutai just nods before standing up. "Let's go, we have work to do."

And with that, Yuuko's shop was now peaceful and empty, waiting for potential customers to ask for help... for a price.
