Chapter Twenty
"When you're a kid, you always want things to stay the same. The same teacher, the same house, the same friends... Being a surgeon is no different. You get used to the same Attendings, same scrub nurses, the same hospital. Of course, that all changes the minute fifth year comes around. And you have to find a new job. It's one of those things people say: you can't move on until you've let go of the past. Letting go is the easy part. It's the moving on that's painful. So sometimes we fight it, try and keep things the same. Things can't stay the same, though. At some point you just have to let go, move on. Because no matter how painful it is, it's the only way we grow"
"not so far away"
Cristina was walking through the airport and Meredith and Lucy were there too. "Hey, Cristina", Meredith called but she didn't hear her. "Cristina!" "Hey!" Cristina exclaimed, finally noticing them.
"Hey. How was Dallas?"
"Bad. I can operate circles around the head of the program. I'm sick of all this schlepping. From now on, they're gonna have to come to me"
"Oh, God, definitely. I'm sick of airports", Lucy added. "I'm too pregnant for this"
"How was yours?"
"It was okay. Still not looking as good as staying in Seattle but I have to check what Alex's plans are first"
"Mer? Boston, right?"
"San Francisco", Meredith corrected. "I'm supposed to leave for Boston tonight, but I think I may cancel".
"What? Only an idiot cancels the Brigham. And didn't Bailey set that up for you? No. She's gonna kill you"
They approached Derek who was waiting for them, holding Zola. "How cute is she?" Meredith said. "Hi!" Derek waved.
"Hey, do you guys need a ride?"
"Yes", Lucy and Cristina replied in unison.
"How did it go?" Derek said. "It was great", Meredith said. "Hi, baby girl. Oh, my love".
"Look who's here. Mama. She missed you"
"Your idiot wife wants to cancel her interview at the Brigham", Cristina stated.
"No. You don't cancel an interview with the best general surgery program in the country"
"What I said"
"Why would we move? You've almost finished the house, and you have a job here", Meredith pointed out. "There are other homes and other jobs in Boston", Derek said. "You're going. End of discussion". "Good husband. Okay, let's go", Cristina said. "Yes, Cristina and I will ride in the back with our girl", Lucy said, taking Zola from Meredith. "I'll get the bags", Derek said.
Meredith, Lucy and Cristina entered the residents dressing room. Cristina was holding a large gift basket. "Oh, this is getting ridiculous", April commented. "The NIH?" Jackson questioned, grabbing the note from the top. "Since when does the NIH bribe residents to come work for them?" "Oh, they don't, except when you're me, a God", Cristina replied. Alex came in and grabbed a cookie from the basket.
"Hey"
"Cookie's stale"
"Oh, Karev. Is this hard for you, having to beg for interviews while some of us just sit back and get wooed?"
"No one is begging"
"Oh, yeah, maybe you should", April said. "Maybe that way, you'd actually get an interview". "Ha, I love mean Kepner," Cristina said. "I got an interview", Alex stated. "Oh, really, where?" April asked.
"At...places. Whatever. Look, this sucks, okay. I mean, we got boards in a couple of weeks and now they want us to go on freaking job interviews? And we've got a baby on the way. There's only so much crap a guy can have thrown at him before he snaps"
"I don't know why you're complaining. I'm the one carrying all the extra weight around", Lucy said. Owen entered the room. "There's a trauma coming in on the roof", he said. "Karev, Kepner, come with me". "I gotta leave for my Northwestern interview in an hour", April said. "I told you yesterday".
"Avery?"
"Sloan's got me all day, Chief. Sorry"
"I'm free", Meredith said. "Great", Owen said. "Thank you".
Cristina and Lucy approached Meredith as she exited Holly, the former missing girl's room. "What is she like? Did she speak English?" Cristina asked her. "Cristina!" Lucy scolded.
"Or is it like that Jodie-Foster-in-the-woods movie?"
"English, although she's not really speaking", Meredith replied. "She was just flipping through the channels. I'm guessing the TV reception in the basement wasn't that great"
"Are you trying to get out of your interview?"
"The parents are on their way. I'm going. I want to"
"Really? 'Cause it seems like you want to stay and raise happy cutie babies with your happy cutie husband"
"Why are you so fine with leaving?" Lucy said.
"Because I'm a surgeon, and I want to work at the best hospital with the best people, as should you. Since when did you turn into such saps?"
Before either of them could answer, Alex came over to them. "What do you guys know about Carson Methodist?" he said. "Nothing. I'd like to keep it that way", Cristina stated.
"It's in Toledo. Or an hour outside, I guess. I interview next week"
"Where's Toledo?" Lucy said.
"Canada", Meredith answered. "Ohio. A quarter of a million people live there", Alex corrected. "But this is an hour outside", Cristina pointed out. "I'm sorry, you want me to move an hour outside Toledo?" Lucy questioned. "No, but Robbins set it up for me. I can't not go", he said. "I've enjoyed our time together these past few years", Cristina said, shaking his hand.
"What are you doing?"
"We are officially on different career paths. It's only polite to say goodbye"
"Oh, my God. Holly?" they heard a woman say. She was followed by a man, the psychiatrist and Richard.
"It's her. It's her"
She started to cry.
Aurora jogged up the stairs to her apartment and took off her shoes and jacket. She was about to take off her sweater when she noticed the mess. Drawers half open and clothes strewn all over the bed. She jumped as someone came out of the bathroom. "Hey. Whoa. Sorry", Owen said.
"I thought you were... I thought you were the kidnapper"
"No, no, I... Did you hear they caught him last night?"
"Uh, yeah"
"That's why I'm here, actually. I needed more suits. You know, for the press conferences. I thought you were at work"
"I just finished. I came home to take a shower"
"Well, I'll clear up and get out of your hair"
"Okay"
Meredith, Cristina and Lucy were in the gallery, watching Callie operate on Holly. Alex entered the gallery and sat down next to them. "Hey. How was Canada?" Meredith asked. "Canada would've been better than that dump", Alex replied. "You want me to call the Chief at Duke?" Cristina said. "He wants me so bad, he'll do anything I tell him, even accept you". "She's not going to Duke and neither are you", Meredith said. "This is a great program, and we'd be crazy to leave".
"That's because you want to play shrink to your patient for the rest of your life"
"She imprinted on me. What am I supposed to do?"
"How's she doing anyway?" Alex said.
"Great, I mean, better. I found two granola bars under her bed this morning. But at least she didn't lie about where they came from. Fincher says she's talking more in therapy, although she's not talking to Frank or Kathleen. She was being kept 5 miles away from their house, and they didn't find her. You don't just get over something like that"
"Maybe she can move in with you when we all leave"
The residents were eating lunch in the cafeteria as Jackson vented his frustrations over his job interview in Los Angeles. "You're a name brand", Alex pointed out. "You're like the freaking Ritz-Carlton of surgery. Who cares if that's why they want you?" "Because he knows deep down he's more of a roadside motel", Cristina replied. "Oh, she's going for the soup", April said as they watched Holly carry her tray. "Bold move. She's gonna have to talk to the soup guy", Beck said. "She's looking good. Looking confident", Jackson commented. "And she bails", Lucy said. "No soup for Holly". "She looks terrified," Aurora said. "Why are you so mean? Would you just go buy her some soup?" "No, it's not mean", Meredith disagreed. "She's going home soon, and Dr Fincher says she has to learn to do things for herself". "And you're gonna finally have to go to Boston for your interview", Cristina said.
"I am not avoiding the interview"
"Really?"
"Well, whenever you go, just beware, they may judge you more on your personality than what really matters, like your resume", April said. "Meredith is not like you. Her personality doesn't suck", Alex said, causing Lucy to smack his arm. "Oh, pizza station", Kelly said. They watched Holly approach the man and quickly turn away. "Oh, whatever! You know what? You know what, those programs can suck it", April said. "I'm tired of trying so hard not to be me. You know what? I like me". "That makes one of us", Alex said.
She gave him a look.
"You make it so easy"
"Look, you don't have to not be you. Just a little less you. That's all", Lucy said. Suddenly Mark came over and grabbed Jackson's ear. "Get up", he said. "What are you doing?" Jackson said.
"Clare Hiatt just called to tell me you walked out on your interview. Call her back, apologise"
"Look, I respectfully withdrew my application"
"You want me to drag you out by your ear?"
"I..."
He forced a tight-lipped smile and got up, leaving with Mark. "Freaking Robbins", Alex grumbled, getting up and walking off. Holly came over to their table. "So I didn't actually speak to anyone", she said. "But I did go to the self-service station. And it actually wasn't that hard". They looked down at her plate to see a slice of cake, a cookie and an eclair.
"What?"
"Nothing. Looks good", Meredith said.
Beck found Jackson in the hall and dragged him into an on-call room. "What the...", he said.
"Sorry. I just really needed to talk to you"
"Okay, about what?"
"You're looking at fellowships?"
"Yeah, I'm not sure where I'm gonna go or anything but-"
"I really, really don't want you to go"
"What? Why?"
"Look, I know we haven't talked in a while but I miss you. And I'd miss you even more if you left and never said goodbye"
He looked at her for a moment before leaning down and kissing her.
