Chapter One

"Even good marriages fail. One minute you're standing on solid ground. The next minute... you're not. And there's always two versions. Yours and theirs. Both versions start the same way, though. Both start with two people falling in love. Nobody gets married thinking it's gonna fail. You think yours is the one that's gonna make it. And so it always comes as a shock. The moment when you realise, it's over. One minute you're standing on solid ground. The next minute, you're not. Do you have what it takes? If your marriage is in trouble, can you weather the storm? When the ground gives way and your world collapses, maybe you just need to have faith. And trust that you can survive this together. Maybe you just need to hold on tight. And no matter what, don't let go"

"you were so in love with simple things"

Aurora woke up to find the other side of the bed empty. She went to the kitchen where Owen was cooking them breakfast. "Morning", he greeted.

"Morning. You're cooking breakfast?"

"Yes, I am. I woke up in a really good mood today"

She smiled.

"I'm really happy for us"

"I'm really happy for us too"

Beck was on top of Jackson, trying to drown out the sound of Zola crying. She sighed. "Okay. I'm... I can't", she said, getting off of him and lying beside him. "I can't have sex when there's a baby from a broken home in the next room. I..."

"Yeah you can"

He climbed on top of her. "Just look at me", he said. "It's you and me". They kissed.

The alarm went off in Alex and Lucy's room and they both jumped up. "So, are we ever gonna talk about what you said?" he asked her.

"You have to be more specific, I say a lot of things"

"Lucy..."

"Look, Alex, don't even worry about it. I didn't mean it, I was drunk"

"You weren't drunk"

"Tipsy, whatever you wanna call it. The point is I didn't mean it so let's just drop it"

The fifth year residents and attendings were getting breakfast in the cafeteria. April was standing on a step trying to do her chief resident speech but she was talking too quietly and no one was listening. So she stopped. Meredith approached Cristina and Lucy at the juices station. "Did he talk to you?" Lucy asked her. "No, he won't even look at me", Meredith replied.

"You tampered with his clinical trial. He thinks that's kind of unforgivable. And I know Derek, he loves to hold a grudge"

"It was for Adele and the chief"

"I know. You regret that you messed up his trial but not what you did, I know"

"You don't have to defend yourself to us", Cristina added. "Anyway, Lucy, how's things with Alex?" "I'm trying to convince him that I was drunk and didn't mean it", Lucy said. "But he definitely doesn't believe me. Because I wasn't drunk and I meant it".

"Then tell him that"

"I can't 'cause he's going to freak out and then I'll freak out and we'll fight. And next thing you know, I'll be joining you two in Meredith's bed"

Owen, Callie and Lucy came out of the ER where Alex, Aurora, Bailey, Cristina, April, Jackson, Kelly and Lexie were waiting in the ambulance bay. "We're going to the scene of an onsite amputation woman's trapped under her car", Owen explained to everyone. "You guys are gonna get swamped with bodies. Kepner, you're in charge till I get back". "Yes, sir. Have fun", April replied. "At an amputation?" Lucy asked her.

"I meant good luck"

They got into the ambulance and drove off. Meredith came out to the ambulance bay. "You know what? There's bound to be piles of head trauma", Crisitina said to her. "Derek's gonna have to talk to you". "I got fired", Meredith said, making everyone look up in shock. "What?" Lexie said.

"The chief fired me"

"You son of a bitch", Cristina said to Alex. "I mean, are you happy now? 'Cause this is all because of you. You and your big, fat, stupid mouth!" "Get off!" Alex yelled at her. Cristina started pushing him towards the ambulance. "Kepner, control your people", Bailey ordered. "Stop! Stop!" April exclaimed, going over to them. "There's no hitting. No hitting. Would you stop right now?" Bailey came over and grabbed Cristina by the neck, pulling her back. A man came over to the ambulance. "You going to the scene?" Alex asked him. "Yeah", the man replied and Alex followed him. "Wait, wait. I didn't tell you you could go. I need you here", April lectured him but he ignored her and got into the ambulance.

An ambulance arrived in the bay. "42 year old female. Lost consciousness en route", the paramedic explained. "Unable to get airway secondary to tracheal injury. Last BP is 89 over 60". Bailey and Cristina took the patient inside.

Owen, Callie and Lucy arrived on the scene and were greeted by the incident commander. "Dr Torres?" the commander asked, shaking Callie's hand. "Yeah, hi", Callie replied.

"Dr Hunt? And..."

"I'm Dr Shepherd", Lucy introduced herself.

"Karen Lorenz, in charge of search and rescue. We're still pulling victims out of the debris, but we have a couple, Danny and Susannah Wilson, stuck down there. He has a head wound and his ankle's messed up, but I don't see any other obvious injuries. We could potentially bring him up, but he won't leave without his wife and her leg is stuck under the car"

They walked over to see an incredibly large sinkhole and were shocked.

"It was a water main break on third", Karen explained to them. "Probably been going on for weeks, and it just gave way. We've got a vitals monitor and a camera, so we have a visual". They put on the headsets so Danny could hear them as they watched him through the camera. "Danny, can you hear me?" Callie asked him. "She's not talking anymore", he replied. "You gotta get down here. We need help". "Danny, Danny, I'm Dr Hunt", Owen said. "Can you read out for me the top three numbers on the monitor?"

"87. 63. 122"

"BP's 87 over 63. She's shocky", Lucy said. "How do we get down to her?" Callie asked Karen. "You don't. It's too unstable", Karen answered. "The whole thing would cave in if we sent you down there. By the time we get it shored up enough to get someone down there, she'll be dead for sure". "I thought that's why we were here, for the amputation", Lucy said.

"You're gonna talk him through it"

"You want him to cut off his wife's leg?"

"Hey, you guys. I think she's dying!" Danny exclaimed. "Get down here! Please hurry. Hurry!"

The supplies had been sent down to Danny for the amputation. "Danny, you've got a kit", Karen informed him. "Now, they're sending down a second harness. The doctors are gonna talk you through this, okay?" "Okay", Danny replied. Alex came over to them. "What the hell are you doing here?" Lucy asked him. "What can I do?" he asked, ignoring Lucy's question. "Kepner called. She wants you back at the hospital", Callie said.

"I can't go back there"

"Give us a second", Lucy said, dragging Alex away.

"What?"

"Listen to me. I know that it sucks that everybody hates you, okay? But you're just gonna have to suck it up because avoiding them won't make them hate you any less. Go back to the hospital please"

He walked off and she went back over to the screen. "Sorry about that", she said and Callie nodded. "Did you get the kit open?" Karen asked Danny. "Almost", Danny replied, before finally getting it open. "Oh, my God. No. No. No. No. No. I can't do this". "Danny, you can do this", Owen reassured him. "We have one chance to bring you both up. In order to do that, you have to amputate Susannah's leg".

"No. No. No. Oh, God"

They heard Alex yell for help at the edge of the sinkhole. Owen helped him pull a kid out of the debris.

"Okay, now pour on that brown soap", Callie instructed Danny. "And pick up the thin silver knife. Good. Okay, now here's the thing. You're gonna have to really put your weight into it". Owen returned. "Try for smooth cuts, okay?" Callie said. "Okay", Danny said.

"Now you see that area just below the tourniquet? That's where you're gonna cut. Do it horizontally, as deep as you can"

"Are you... Are you sure she's not gonna feel anything?"

"No, she's unconscious, Danny. She won't feel a thing"

"Okay. I can't..."

"Danny...", Owen began. "Take that blue towel and cover her face. It'll help". He did so and prepared to cut. "Alright, now remember to put your weight behind it, okay?" Callie reminded him. "Here we go. One... Two... Three". "Oh, God! Oh, God!" he exclaimed as he started to cut. "Oh, God!"

"I hit bone. I think I hit bone", Danny informed them. "That's good. That's good", Callie reassured him. "Okay, put the scalpel down now. Now take the curved clamp and move it back and forth beneath the bone".

"God. God, I can't... It won't..."

"Put your hand in the incision to get more traction"

"I can't"

"Danny, I know this is hard, but we need to create more space so you'll be able to saw through her bone"

"No, but... No, I can't. Okay? This is my wife. Alright? I'm gonna kill her. She's bleeding now..."

"Danny, you can't stop"

"No, you need to come down here. I can't do this. I won't do this!"

"I'm going down", Owen announced, taking off his headset. "No", Callie said. "Dr Hunt, I can't let you go down there", Karen argued. "He can't do it", Owen stated. "Yes, he can", Callie said.

"He can't. We are asking too much. I'm going"

"If it starts to go, I'm bringing you...", Karen said. "I should go. I'm an orthopaedic surgeon", Callie said. "You have a wife and a child", Owen said. "Owen, you have a wife who's pregnant", Lucy reminded him. He seemed to falter for a second but recovered quickly. "I'll be fine, I'm going", he said.

Bailey entered the trauma where Callie and Lucy were working on Susannah. She was followed by the rest of the fifth year residents, excluding Meredith. "What do you got?" Bailey asked them. "A field amputation with complicated extrications", Callie answered. "Still assessing her multiple crash injuries, but I felt a broken pelvis for sure, and her BP's in the toilet".

"Yeah, this is a Gunther"

"Gunther? What's a Gunther?" Lucy asked. "Think they can handle a Gunther?" Callie asked Bailey. "Oh, I think they need a Gunther", Bailey said.
