"DESSA!" Jake yells out from where he's rolling down the hallway, the woman is half way down the hall but she stops when she heard her name.
Whirling around, Odessa smiles at Jake. "Hey. We're heading to the same place, right?"
Jake rolled up closer to Odessa. "I'd assume so. Only if I knew where we were actually going." He chuckled, and so does Odessa.
"Excuse me, excuse me!" A tall, skinny man, with short dark brown hair chased after the two. He called out after them, running forward and slowing at the side of Jakes wheelchair. "You're Odessa, right? Tessa's twin sister? And you're Jake? Tom's brother. Wow, you look just like your twins." The unknown person said in awe, gazing at Odessa and Jakes faces. When he realized he hadn't introduced himself he stuck his hand out. "Sorry, I'm Norm Spellman. Went through Avatar training with them both."
Jake raised his eyebrow at Norm. Letting out a hum as he continued to roll forward. "Uh-huh."
Norm smiled awkwardly, pointing to a room down the hall. "Wanna see where we'll be working?"
"Uh, yeah. Sure." Jake nodded on behalf of himself and Odessa. Odessa and Jake followed behind Norm, the three entering into a large lab where they'd be working. Where their new lives would start.
Norm babbled to Jake, Odessa having walked off the second she entered the room. She had noticed Norms out going personality. He seemed very friendly and comfortable where they were. It started to make her feel like an outcast, because she had zero training and little knowledge in all of this.
Odessa tilts her head, her braid falling over her shoulder and into her face. She reaches out, placing her hand against a glass tube that holds a large blue body. It's an avatar, only it isn't hers. Blue liquid surrounds them, and they float like babies.
Long black hair that was already tied back in braids, as if that was they way it had grown, and a large tail that had hair on the tip. It's Jakes avatar.
"Me, Jake, and Norm are here to drive these remotely controlled bodies called Avatars. And they're grown from human DNA mixed with the DNA of the natives."
"Hey! Hey, welcome. Welcome to Pandora." Dr. Max Patel greeted the three as they all admired the Avatars. "Good to have you."
"Hey." Norm greeted him happily with a large smile. Heading right towards the Avatar that looked very much like him, only taller and with much more hair, and a tail.
"Damn." Jake chuckled as he watched Norms avatar twitch. "They got big."
"Yeah, they fully mature on the flight out." Norm explained. "So the proprioceptive sims seem to work really well."
"Yeah, they've got great muscle tone." Max nodded, agreeing with them. "It'll take us a few hours to get them decanted, but you guys can take them out tomorrow." Max explained to the three, Norm grinned widely.
Jake turned his wheelchair and rolled himself over to where Odessa was standing. Jake eye'd the creatures legs with curiosity, seeing them move around. He headed towards his Avatar's head. He stared at the face, seeing the long animal like nose, the pointed Na'vi ears, the long black braided hair.
"Look's like him." Jake said. He tilted his head and watched his avatar.
Odessa looked over at Jake. "Looks like you. Y'know, it's your avatar."
Jake reached out and tugged on Odessa's hand. "I see yours."
Odessa whirled around to where Jake had been point at. That's when she was the avatar she would control. She didn't walk over until Jake had wheeled himself over.
All Odessa saw was her dead twin sister.
"AND, well, the the concept is that every driver is matched to their own avatar, so that their nervous systems match. Or something along those lines." Odessa sighed as she looked at the compute screen. "They're telling me that I should get used to this. And that I'm lucky. That because me and Tessa were twins I can link with her avatar."
Jake rolled over, flashing a peace sign at the camera. It appeared on the screen for as long as he was willing to hold it. "Doing okay?"
"Yeah." Dessa nodded and Jake rolled away. She faced the camera once again. "It's weird. I see her avatar. This was her journey. I don't see my face when I see the blue avatar, I see hers." Taking a deep breath, she paused before she continued. "She was different than me. We were twins and all, peas in a pod, but her smile was brighter. Her favourite colour was yellow and mine is a dark forest green. I dyed my hair and she let her natural colours show. She chose this, and I didn't. I'm okay with being the grumpy twin, well she was the happy one."
Odessa glanced over at Jake who had started his own video now. "Jake, his twin died too. He told me that he felt the same way I am. We were both twins, but different people. And now we get to live their lives well they rest in an urne. At least I'm not alone, I wouldn't have been able to do this my self. I'm thankful for the dead twin club we formed."
"THEY'RE coming out!" A male scientist yelled out. Norm, Max, Jake and Odessa enter the link room, only hearing the call and the machines shutting down as they did so.
"Attention. Driver's coming out of the link." A woman's voice announced over the P.A System, the words filling the room.
One of the large white link pods opened up, revealing Grace Augustine. She sighed and ran her hands through her hair. "Oh, god. Who's got my god damn cigarette?" Grace lifted her legs over the side of the pod as she sat up. "Guys! What's wrong with this picture?" Grace said harshly as the assistant ran over with her lab coat and cigarettes. A glare rested on her face. "Thank you!"
"Grace Augustine is a legend." Norm gushed as everyone headed inside the Link room, he was looking at the woman in awe. "She's the head of the Avatar Program. She wrote the book, I mean, literally wrote the book on Pandoran Botany."
"Well, that's 'cause she likes plants better than people." Max chuckled, his voice just above a whisper. "Here she is, Cinderella back from the ball. Grace, I'd like you to meet Norm Spellman, Jake Sully And Odessa Everett." Max introduced the three new recruits.
"Norm." Grace recognized the name, removing her glasses from her face and releasing a breath of smoke into the air. "I hear good things about you. How's your Na'vi?"
"May the All Mother smile upon our first meeting." Norm stated proudly in the Na'vi language.
"Not bad. You sound a little formal." Grace spoke easily, the words rolling off her tongue perfectly.
"I studied for five years, but there is much to learn." Norm said.
"Grace?" Max interrupted the twos Na'vi conversation and gestured to Jake and Odessa. "This is Jake Sully and Odessa Everett."
"Ma'am." Jake held out his hand to shake her's. He held his head up high.
"Yeah, yeah. I know who you two are, and I don't need you. I need your siblings." Grace told them rudely, refusing to put out her own hand. Jake's slowly retracted back to himself when Odessa placed hers over his hand and gave it a shove downwards. "You know, the PhD ones who trained for three years for this mission?"
"He's dead, they're both dead." Jake frowned at her rudeness, he didn't like her yet. "I know it's a big inconvenience for everyone."
"How much lab training have you had?" Grace asked roughly, seeing how she wasn't used to being back talked like that.
"I dissected a frog once." Jake smirked.
"Oh! Me too!" Odessa added, grinning.
