Prologue

It's a famous saying, trouble comes in threes.  Since natural things always come in pairs (think of your eyes, ears, breasts,...). Anything that comes in threes is often associated with the abnormal, unnatural or troublesome.

As Evee's eyes adjusted to the bright light coming through her little bathroom window, she realized that her toilet-seat had been her pillow for the night. There were better wake up calls than this one. Groaning, she immediately felt an immediate thurst for anything that was liquid. Her throat felt dry and sore. As her stomach turned, she suddenly regret that previous thought. Anything liquid without alcohol.

Images flashed through her mind as a dull ache appeared around her left eye. Was her body broken? Trying not to fall face down on the floor, she used her arms to uplift herself, hoping that her legs wouldn't give out. Her fingers quickly wrapped themselves around the white bathroom sink. She tried steadying herself as for a moment her world turned, literally. It took about five seconds of staring into the mirror to realize that the blue and green patterns around her left eye were indeed, not make up but severe bruising. Yes, she was broken. After twenty five years of mayhem, you finally did it!

"No, no, no, no." Her fingers gently touched the swollen part of her face. "You have to be kidding me." Evee mumbled to herself, turning around and leaving to bathroom. She wanted to, at least. Her feet stopped abruptly when she noticed she was only wearing one heel. She quickly took off her only heel, deciding this day obviously couldn't get better. Finally entering her living room, she noticed two other bodies lying in unusual positions. She stood still for a moment, actually checking if they were both still breathing.

A sigh of relieve escaped her lips as she noticed Jared's slight snore. He was lying with his head on her kitchen table, body still sitting upright. Jared was her first friend she ever made in London. He obviously had a rough night himself. She could tell that he tried to consume a late night snack because there was still a half eaten pepperoni pizza next to his head. His left hand was firmly holding a fork. He must have fallen asleep halfway through eating it. Not wanting to break her head over the fact why anyone would eat a pizza with a fork, she turned her eyes upon the second victim in the room.

Fred, her downstairs neighbour was spread out on her brown sofa. Evee couldn't help but smile, ignoring her heart skip a little beat. Even with that small patch of drool on his worn out, black t-shirt, he looked like a million bucks. Who was she kidding? He always looked this good. They had a rough relationship, but she cared deeply for the guy. She walked over towards him, noticing she finally found her missing heel, dangling from Fred's left foot. "Fred!" She shoved his shoulder. "Freddy! Wake up."

She heard him grumble, "Evee, leave me alone." He mumbled, trying to slap her hand away. "Leave me be."

"No, you have to get up. What happened last night? I can't remember half of it." Her fingers rubbed the sore spot on her forehead. My god, my head is exploding.

"Why doesn't that surprise me?" Fred smiled, his eyes still closed. "You were absolutely smashed." Fred shifted, opening his eyes.

"No kidding." Evee squinted her eyes, not sure if she should be insulted by his obvious enjoyment of her pain.

Fred finally opened his eyes, revealing his green depths. "Oh boy your eye... She got you good!" He noticed her swollen left eye.

"I know, it hurts. I'm dying." Evee moaned, she sunk her body on the floor, her back against the couch. Grabbing her head in between her hands, she tried recollecting some memories. "I remember some big woman... I remember beer..."

"That big woman was a 260 pound gorilla with the name of Bernadette." He explained.

"Great, you just couldn't stop me, could you?"

"I tried but you were getting mad at me. Yelling that not one steals your beer, in which of course, you are very correct but you should have let this one pass."

"Thank you for the advice." Evee sarcastically spoke.

"You know what I've noticed?" Fred interestingly spoke.

"What?"

"When you're really drunk, you always want to fight or fuck." Freddy spoke cheeky.

"I should probably have a third flight option, shouldn't I?" Evee scrunched up her nose. "But we didn't last night, right?"

It had only happened a few times, when they were both tipsy or just very horny. No strings attached. Just a healthy, grown up get together which involved two naked bodies and a lot of sweat.

He laughed, "No, I had to carry you up the stairs on my shoulder, you were far beyond gone to even get past first base." His eyes looked around, spotting Jared in the kitchen. "But we do have some time now... I don't think Jared's going to wake up soon."

A sceptical laugh escaped Evee's lips, "You're kidding right? My head is literally pounding as if there's hammer inside of my skull, I have a black eye and I still have to work today." She tried slapping his teasing hands away. "My boss will kill me. Thank god, I have a late shift."

"Maybe you should call in sick, we could order some comfort food and relax all day." Freddy spoke.

"That's not happening." Evee shook her head. "This is my own fault. Can't put the kids without care because I've decided to be a massive arse last night."

Evee worked at St Thomas hospital, as a child nurse. She applied for the job two years ago when she moved to London and never wanted to do anything else in her life apart from making those kids smile. "Evee, it's actually already half past noon. What time do you start?" She shifted her eyes towards the clock on her kitchen wall.

"SHIT!" She looked down at her outfit, a pair of ripped jeans and a black tank top. It would have to do for today, she was going to change into her work clothes at the hospital anyways.

She quickly made her way towards the bathroom, brushed her teeth and tried covering up her black eye the best she could. She pulled up her long blonde hair into a ponytail. "You guys better clean this place up a bit before I get back." She told Fred as he rubbed his eyes, yawning.

"Yes, mum."

She quickly grabbed her purse, checking if everything was still in there. Thank god, she didn't lose her wallet or cellphone. She grabbed the black cardigan that was on the couch and sniffed it. No smoke air and no puke. Ignoring Fred's laughter, she shrugged and put it on. Her high heeled, black ankle boots were standing by the door.

"Hey Evee..." She heard Fred speak in a sincere voice.

Turning her head, she expectingly lifted her eyebrows. "Yeah?"

"Your tits look amazing in that tank top." Fred spoke, his hand on his heart.

"Thank you. Your penis looks very tiny in that boxershort." She smiled, pointing towards his boxers. The last thing she saw while exiting her apartment was Freddy's shocked face. She couldn't help but laugh, regretting it almost immediately as her head started to pound.

Evee decided she would never make it on time, so instead of being late and grumpy, she decided to be late and pleasurable. Making a quick stop at Starbucks, she sipped from her Americano coffee, cursing London's traffic to hell. "Come oooooonnnnn" She honked at the old woman, driving an old fiat 500 in front of her. "Probably got her driver license with her cereal. Some people have to work you know!"

An hour later and she finally arrived at the hospital, the place was packed. There were no parking spots left and she had to wait for another fifteen minutes until someone decided to move out of theirs.  She had never seen so many people at the hospital before. "What's going on now?!" She groaned, noticing a lot of black jeeps in different spots. Evee decided to wear her Ray Bans to enter to hospital, not wanting to frighten anyone with her big black eye. She decided on telling the kids she wrestled with a big pirate last night, whose name was going to be Burt.

Entering the back entrance with her coffee in her hand, she hurriedly tried to make her way towards the staff changing rooms. Atleast, that's what she tried doing, there were people blocking her path, wearing suits and sunglasses. Unless, you're supporting a huge hangover, there is absolutely no reason to wear sunglasses inside.

"Uhm, hello, people are trying to get to work here?!" She yelled, only two heads turned towards her. "Yes I see you looking at me, unless you guys are shooting a new Men In Black movie, there's no reason to block my path!" Okay now, there were more people looking at her. She noticed more heads turning including one with a patch of ginger hair.

"Look, unless that's Ed Sheeran, you have to let me through, I have a massive hangover and I'm already late. Please let me through."

She heard someone chuckle, "Just let her through James, she's harmless."

The guards finally stepped out her way as her sunglass covered eyes made contact with bright blue ones. She didn't think twice what was going on, "Harmless my ass." Eveline heard herself say automatically underneath her breath.

The nerve of some people!
