Chapter Two
Evee had the masterplan all figured out in her head. Instead of focusing on these royal visitors, she would be the one to focus on the kids that were alone today. She knew that they would probably enter some rooms to say hello to the children, so she would be in the rooms that didn't contain the ginger haired prince.
Her mind wondered too much in the past hour, constantly trying to recollect his name. She knew she had heard it before and she knew it was't that difficult. She decided for now, she would just call him Eddy in her mind.
Entering the nursing station, she decided to do some paperwork for about 45 minutes. A lot of files still needed to be completed and she knew the computer on the working desk could be incredibly slow. Silently cursing for what seemed the third time in five minutes, she heard loud noises in the distance. Right, this was her cue to leave that damned slow computer and to start on her patients. She knew the exact place she wanted to start.
Maja had been a patient for three months, battling with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The little girl never ceased to amaze Evee. She always had a smile on her face, even in pain. Maja's parents came all the way from Edinburgh, Scotland to get the best treatment for their daughter. When Eveline entered the room, she saw that the six-year old was alone, drawing in a colour book.
"Well, well if it isn't my favourite patient in the whole wide world." Evee spoke, grinning as she saw the girl put down her crayons. She closed the door behind her, blocking the loud noises.
"Evee!" Maja grinned, her eyes twinkling. "Have you heard?" The girl spoke with excitement.
"Heard what?" Eveline stepped closer towards the bed Maja was sitting on.
"There's a real life prince in the hospital." Evee noticed the girl's smile reaching her ears. At least Eddy was good at making the kids happy, even though he wasn't around yet.
"A real life prince, you say? How would we know he's a real prince?" Eveline teased, placing the thermometer underneath Maja's armpit and checking her central venous catheter. "Maybe he's wearing his tiara." Evee added, joking around with the little girl.
"Evee! A prince doesn't wear a tiara! Only princesses do!" She giggled, playfully slapping Eveline's arm.
"Hmm, are you sure?" Evee looked at the girl in fake confusion. "I thought I saw a prince on tv a while ago with a tiara..."
"You're wrong!" Maja spoke seriously, shaking her head in disagreement. "It might have been his girlfriend. She might like tiaras."
Evee grinned, taking out the thermometer, leaving it on the bed. She noticed that Maja had slight fever, which could end up being a disaster for a child battling with cancer. "Ah! I remember now! Yes! It was his girlfriend!" Evee playfully agreed. "Sweety, I'm going to take your blood pressure. I just need a second to get the monitor, I'll be right back."
"Don't take too long! The prince might be here before you know it!"
"Of course, I will. I'll always come back to you, cheeky girl." The nurse turned around and opened the door towards the hallway. Not before checking if the coast was clear. There was no one in the hallway, she did hear noise a few rooms down the hall. Evee quickly grabbed a blood pressure monitor in the infirmary.
She wanted to return to the room but she suddenly heard a noise in the hallway. Fuck fuck fuck. She should just stay where she was, just for a couple of minutes. They wouldn't stay in the hallway for too long.
A few minutes passed when she heard Maja's voice. "EVEE! WHERE ARE YOU!?" Oh god no, the little girl's vocals shrilled through the hallway as Eveline cursed to herself.
"Maja! I'm here!" She yelled back, hoping she didn't attract any attention. She heard little footsteps enter the infirmary.
"There you are, I thought you left me." The girl pouted. "You took so long."
"I told you, I would never leave you, I promise." Evee put the blood pressure monitor aside and ducked down to Maja's eyesight.
"Pinky promise?" Her favourite patient looked right into Eveline's eyes, holding out her tiny finger.
"Pinky promise." Evee wrapped her pink around the tiny finger. "Now come here." The nurse wrapped her arms around the small girls' frame and lifted her up. Holding her against her hip. Maja quickly wrapped her legs around Eveline's waist.
"Evee?"
"Yes" The nurse took the blood pressure monitor in her other hand, holding the girl tightly against her frame.
"People are staring." She whispered.
It was then that Eveline realized they weren't having a private conversation. About six pair of eyes were staring through the glass that separated the infirmary with the hallway. Two particular bright blue ones were staring right through her. The blonde nurse felt her cheeks heat up and quickly adverted her eyes. "Let's go back to your room."
"Evee?" The child questioned her once again.
"Yeah?"
"What happened to your eye?"
Eveline wished the ground would open up and swallow her whole. Every security guy and that damned ginger haired prince were adverting their eyes from the little girl on Evee's waist towards her bruised eye. Janice, who was standing right next to the prince, shook her head quietly.
I'm getting in so much trouble.
The nurse sighed, moving her feet towards the hallway. "Last night, I got into a big fight with a pirate named Burt."
She quickly moved past the silent crowd, smiling at everyone while nodding her head. She tried to hide her flushed cheeks but was sure everyone noticed them. "A pirate?!" Maja screeched. "You shouldn't be fighting pirates! You should be marrying princes!"
Evee couldn't help but laugh, tossing her head back. "I'll let you know when I meet one."
"There's one right there silly." Eveline didn't see their reactions because she was walking away from them. Maja on the other hand pointed towards the prince, grinning as the little child received a snort and a wave back from her prince. "He's a ginger though." The little girl whispered in Evee's ear.
Eveline couldn't hold herself in anymore and laughed full on. She tried to hurry and close the door behind them so the crowd wouldn't hear her laughter.
"So is Ed Sheeran." The nurse mumbled, holding back her laughter.
"Who?" Maja scrunched up her nose. "I don't know that guy."
Evee snorted, "That's alright, come on. Let me take your blood pressure, princess."
Down the hall, Harry was impressed by the blonde nurse. His eyes made contact with James, his security guy. "You think it's the same girl from downstairs? The one with the sunglasses and ripped jeans?"
"Sir, it's hard to believe, but I'm quite certain it is." The security guard looked quite worried at Harry's facial expression. He knew his type and the blonde nurse fit right into it. The petit brunette who kept flickering her eyes at the prince didn't receive any attention at all.
Harry turned his attention towards the elderly nurse. He couldn't remember her name. "Who was the blonde nurse with the small girl?"
"Oh, her?" Janice looked a little worried, she hoped Eveline didn't ruin the hospital's reputation. "Her name is Eveline Delamane. She has been working here for about two years now. A little damsel in distress but has the heart in the right place, sir. The kids adore her."
"I can see she makes a good impact on the children here. She seems like a very interesting individual." Harry spoke, he would have loved to get to know her better. He liked the sound of her name plus her connection with the little girl made him think of his own mother. She obviously was quite the character, judging from her little passing downstairs.
"Oh she very much is, sir. She offered herself up to focus on the children while we'd do the tour. She thinks that's still the most important thing." Janice hoped she didn't offend the prince.
"It is the most important thing. That's why we're all here, for the children." Harry smiled, letting the nurse know everything was okay. "I'm absolutely nothing compared to these little fighters. I'd like to meet that little girl from before." Harry spoke, quietly hoping the blonde nurse would still be around.
"We can go meet her now, if you want to." Janice replied.
"I'd love that." The prince smiled and turned his head towards James, "How do you think she got that black eye?" He whispered in his ear.
"I have no idea, sir." James answered stiffly. If he was honest, he hoped he'd never find out but by the look of Harry's intrigued face, he was certain he was.
