Chapter Twenty Eight
When the Black Range Rover pulled over at Kensington Palace, Evee's stomach turned. She finally realized how real this all was. The security guys at the gate, the big palace right in front of her, the neatly kept garden. Everything was so perfect, it made Evee think how in godsname she would ever be up to such standards. Harry was born into this wealth, she was the girl who was thrilled when she found a nice Michael Kors purse with fifty percent off the price tag.
"Are you alright?" Harry asked, rubbing Evee's knee. He noticed how she was silenty staring at everything.
"Yeah. Yeah, I'll be fine." She spoke, trying to give him a reassuring smile. "Shit, Harry I forgot to pack to stay the night."
"That's fine. You can use some stuff from me to sleep in." He didn't want to scare her off by already telling her they would have their usual sundaybreakfast at his brother's place.
Evee nodded her head in reply, watching how the car suddenly stopped and Harry unbuckled their seatbelts. "Let's go."
Grabbing her purse, Evee followed Harry out of the car. He held out his hand to support her. "Thanks." She smiled as he closed the door behind her. "Always the gentleman."
"Of course." He winked at her, taking her hand and leading her towards the front door of his brother's place. "Ready?" He watched her from the corner of his eye.
"Yeah." She smiled at him, trying to be calm on the outside. Inside Evee was already summing up what things she couldn't say. She couldn't curse. She couldn't call Harry a shithead. She-
Her thoughts were interrupted because the door in front of her opened. There stood the guy she had actually seen a couple of times on television. A signature smile upon his friendly face, "There you are! And you brought your girlfriend! For a moment I thought that you actually made her up once again!" Evee tried holding back laughter but couldn't when she saw Harry's face. He was already annoyed by his brother.
"Shut up, you idiot. Now let us in, it's cold." The blonde nurse was surprised how they both teased each other like normal people did.
William stepped back, opening the door further to let them into the hallway. Evee tried her best not to stare at all the expensive looking furniture. She hoped to god she wouldn't break anything or fall over something. "You must be Eveline. It's nice to meet you, I'm Will."
"Hi, please call me Evee. It's lovely to meet you as well." The blonde hoped she didn't overstep her boundaries when she already told William what to do. To not call her Eveline but Evee.
"I will." William grinned. "Come on, I'll introduce you to my wife." Harry watched as his brother placed his hand on his girlfriend's back, already escorting her towards the dining room and totally forgetting he excisted.
"Euhm hello?" He mumbled, following them quickly.
Evee felt instant ease when she spoke with William, it was as if he was trained to make people comfortable.
He probably is, she thought.
When she finally entered to dining room, she had to admit she was a little more starstruck than she thought she would be. The duchess was wearing simple black jeans and a dark blue shirt but still managed to look like she stepped out of a magazine. She was placing a toddler, who Evee recognized as George (Harry had shown her pictures) in a highchair and he wasn't looking very pleased with her. "Mommy says you have to sit still now, we'll eat in a minute." She softly spoke to her son, not noticing she had company.
The toddler replied, "Cars! I want car!"
"If you eat like a good boy, you can play with your cars after dinner."
"Kate?" William spoke, interrupting his wife.
"Yes?" Kate looked up, surprised to see a pretty blonde standing next to William and Harry with a bright smile upon his face. The blonde smiled at her but looked a little shy. "You must be Eveline! It's so nice to finally meet you!" She walked over towards Evee, ignoring the protests of her son.
"Nice to meet you as well. Please call me Evee." Evee smiled. "This must be George." She looked at the toddler who had a pout on his face.
"Yes, this is our little Georgie. Who's being a little pain in the ass." William replied, chuckling.
"Will!" Kate looked at her husband.
"What? he is!" Her husband replied, turning his head towards Harry who stood beside him. "Last night he managed to turn my right nipple around. Cheeky little bastard. It's still bruised." Subconsciously, his left hand made its way to his chest.
"Your tiny nipples?" Harry laughed at his brother.
"My fine nipples." He answered, his eyebrows raised.
Evee tried not to laugh at the situation. Biting her lip, she turned towards George in his chair. Crunching down so she was at eye level, she spoke to him in a sweet voice. "Hi George, I'm Evee."
The toddler just stared at her for a second with his worldfamous 'I am not amused' expression before he finally managed a smile, "Eeveej?"
She grinned, ignoring the fact that people were looking at George and her. "Yes, Evee. I'm with your uncle Harry."
"Hawwie?" The toddler hadn't noticed that his uncle was in the room but when she mentioned him, his eyes frantically searched for a patch of ginger hair. When they finally landed on Harry, the kid raised his arms. "Hawwie!!!"
"I think he likes you." Evee spoke, grinning when Harry picked up his nephew, throwing him slightly in the air. The toddler's giggles loudly echoed through the room.
"Of course he likes me, I'm his favourite uncle." He laughed, blowing a raspberry on George his little stomach. The toddler laughed in response.
"Don't think so high of yourself." Kate chuckled, still surprised that her son hadn't cried when Evee spoke to him. "I'm going to check the food in the kitchen. Please sit."
"Do you need help?" Evee wondered, hoping she would be able to do something.
"No, it's fine! I'll be alright." Kate smiled at the girl.
"No, I insist. I actually really like cooking."
"Well, there's still some bread to be cut. You can do that if you want. The rest is almost done."
"I can cut bread." Evee nodded her head, grinning and following the brunette towards the kitchen. "You guys have a really lovely place."
"Thank you. Have you been to Harry's?" Kate passed a knife towards Evee.
The nurse got the message and started cutting the baguette in front of her. "No actually, I'm going there after dinner."
Kate nodded her head, she was told that she was good at estimating people. The pretty blonde that stood before her, looked a little nervous but she could seemed genuinely interested."We used to live there but with now with the kids, this place is much bigger, it's just easier."
Evee nodded her head, praying to god she wouldn't cut into her fingers. "Harry told me you have a little girl also."
"Yes, Charlotte, she's taking a bath with the nanny right now." Kate replied stirring into the bouillabaisse.
"George is lovely."
"He's a bit of a rascal. He used to cry so much. Charlotte's more of a quiet one. Thank god." Evee was glad they were actually getting on and that there were no awkward silences. Kate seemed really nice and she had a way of comforting Evee. "Harry told me you work at the children's hospital?" The duchess asked with genuine interest.
Immediately Kate noticed a spark in Evee's eyes, a smile forming on her face. "Yes, I work at St Thomas at the oncology department for minors."
"That must be tough." Kate herself, had always wondered what it was like to have a normal job. Somehow she had always been the prince's girlfriend but her curiousity always wondered about a normal life. She knew she loved William with all of her heart, but she always liked hearing stories of other people's experiences.
"It is. But it's worth it. Seeing those kids smile is really the best thing in the world." She answered, talking with passion about her job.
Kate only smiled in reply, happy that Harry finally found someone equally as good with kids as he had always been. She could sense that Evee had a good and pure heart. "How rude of me! I haven't asked you what you want to drink! What would you like? White wine? Red wine?"
Evee knew this probably wouldn't be a good time to ask for a beer. "Some white wine would be lovely, please."
Back in the dining room, Harry was bouncing his knee up and down with George on his lap. "She looks nice." William asked, sitting next to his brother.
"She really is." Harry agreed, he wasn't surprised when Evee instantely connected with Kate. He knew she was really good at making social contacts.
"And she's hot." William spoke, receiving a slap on his upperarm from his brother.
"Hey!"
"Way above your league." William liked teasing his younger brother.
"I know. Don't tell her that though." He grinned as George played with the bracelets on Harry's right wrist.
"So..."
"So, what Will? Get it out."
"Have you done the deed yet?" William grinned at his brother.
"Your nearly three year old son is sitting on my lap, you're disgusting." Harry rolled his eyes, trying to hold back a grin but failing miserably.
"Ha! Your face gave you away! Anyways, dad wants to meet her as well."
"What?! You told dad?!" Harry spoke with anger, he wanted to take things slow, exposing Evee to his father wasn't taking things slow.
"You're nearly two months together! He came over last week and wondered where you were and I might have accidentely said that you were at your girlfriend's place." William shrugged, remembering how he told his father about Harry's Evee. How he could see that his brother was already falling in love with the blonde nurse. He might have accidentely also slipped that he thought this might be the one for Harry, which of course made his father want to meet the girl. He didn't confess that to Harry though, scared that his brother would punch him in the nuts.
"Great." Harry mumbled.
"What's the big deal? Father nearly walked in on you and Cress when you guys were like three weeks together."
"This one is different." Harry spoke, slowly combing his hand through George his hair.
"I can see that." William spoke, nodding his head. His brother had changed. There was more light in his eyes, the sparkle he had last two years ago was back and it shined as brightly as never before.
Harry wanted to ask William when he knew in the past that Kate could be potentially turn out to be his wife, but was interrupted when Kate and his girlfriend marched into the dining area, both animatedely chatting with each other with a glass of wine in their hands.
"Dinner should be ready in five." Kate spoke, looking at both men.
"That's great, hunny. So Evee, Harry told me you thought he was Ed Sheeran when you first saw him! I have to tell you, I absolutely loved that story." William laughed as he saw the blonde nearly choking on her wine.
Coughing a little, Evee tried to come back to her senses. She knew William was only saying it to tease Harry and not insult her. "Yes. Honest mistake." She tried holding back laughter when she saw Harry's face.
"Can you for once not try and humiliate me?" The ginger spoke to his brother.
"No, of course not. Anyways, what gave it away? The ginger hair?"
Evee giggled, taking another sip. "Yes, it's always the hair."
"It always is, isn't it?" Kate spoke, scrunching her nose.
"Atleast I have hair." The nurse heard her boyfriend mumble next to her.
Somehow, she knew she'd have a pleasant night.
