Chapter Thirty Nine

She knew she made a mistake once she closed her apartment door behind her. She shouldn't have said that. It wasn't professional. Her emotions got the best of her. She would bring the royal family in a bad daylight. It wasn't William's fault that his brother was a cheating asshole.

Evee wanted to lock herself in her apartment and never come out again. At least not for the following three days. But she couldn't, she had an early shift tomorrow and the place was already understaffed. She had yet to cry because she had yet to believe that it was all real.

He said he loved her, he had bought that necklace. Subconsciously her fingers wrapped herself around the delicate band around her neck. Tugging it off, she threw it on her kitchen counter. Did it mean nothing?

All of those months, spending every god damn minute they could together. The way his eyes lit up when he saw her or when he laughed at one of her jokes? Was that all for nothing? Was he such an amazing actor?

Man, then someone should give the man an Oscar. She had blindly fallen into his web, without any doubt she had loved him fearlessly.

Taking her cellphone out of her purse, she noticed a lot of missed calls and text messages. 6 missed calls from Harry along with a couple of text messages.

'Don't believe it, pick up the phone'

'Where are you at? Please answer'

'Call me as soon as possible'

How could she not believe it? There were pictures for god sake! She wasn't ready to hear his voice. She didn't want to listen to her answering machine. Ignoring his left messages, she noticed Chloe had tried to call twice. Her brunette friend had left a text message also, 'I'm coming over xx'.

She's coming over? Eveline didn't have time to let her words sink in because there was a knock on her door. "Let me in." She heard Chloe scream from the other side of the door. Evee quickly marched towards her door, letting her colleague in.

"I thought I was never going to get through that mob of paps outside. I don't know how you deal with it, honestly."

"Yes, it's not easy." Evee mumbled, closing the door behind her friend.

"Are you okay?" Chloe asked, standing in front of the blonde and rubbing her upperarms.

Evee sighed, bringing one hand towards her forehead. "How can I be okay, Chlo? My boyfriend cheated on me, I'm so angry and confused and sad and I don't know what to feel. I just- how do I deal with this? How do I cope? Everyone, the whole wide world knows about me. They know about the shame."

"Look, he should be ashamed. Not you. The public is actually very upset with Harry." Chloe spoke, she was just as shocked as Eveline when she saw the pictures. She really didn't think Harry was capable of doing that, he seemed so in love with her best friend. "I assume you've seen all the pictures?"

"Just one, where they're hugging, if that's what you call it. I didn't see the kiss, didn't have the heart to turn the page." Eveline threw herself in her sofa. Just the mere fact that her boyfriend's lips were on another girl's lips, she didn't want to think about it.

"Technically you can't really see them kissing. You can't see their lips connecting." Chloe explained, she had seen the pictures and thought it was odd. Sure the woman's head was quite close to his and you could see Harry lowering his head also. But it was dark and not very clear.

"You're seriously going to make me barf." She didn't want to hear it.

"I think you should see the pictures."

"I will search them on the internet when I feel like it Chloe, I can't handle another one." Evee mumbled, the only thing she wanted to do was crawl into bed with a big jar of Ben and Jerry's.

"But-"

"Look, the fact that they're kissing or not kissing, okay it's a big deal if they would have kissed, I get that. But he lied to me Chloe, even if there wasn't a kiss. He met up with his ex-girlfriend, he's hugging her like he never wants to let go. He didn't tell me jack shit. South Africa is a freaking big country, you don't just run into your ex-girlfriend! You meet up with her." Evee rambled, throwing every emotion she had into it.

"I think you should at least give him the chance to expla-"

"Why are you taking his side Chloe?! You're supposed to be on my side!" The blonde yelled at her friend.

"I am on your side! I will always be on your side!"

"You're not doing a good job." Evee snarled, getting off the sofa and on to her computer.

"I just think you guys looked so happy that he didn't have the heart to cheat. He loved you and I'm sure he still loves you, Evee. He worked his ass off to be with you so I don't understand why he'd go on and do that." Atleast Chloe was calm. The brunette knew Evee had a temper, she could keep things in for a long time but once things got too much, it all came out at once. "It doesn't add up. It does not make sense."

"Does this look like a fucking guy that loves me?!" Eveline had gone to google and quickly found the familiar pictures of Harry and his ex. "Oh and what about this one? Does he look like he's thinking about me in here?!" Harry was laughing on the picture, listening to what Chelsy was saying, his head close to her mouth so he could hear. "Or in this one? Maybe he was too poor to buy his own drink?! Spent all of his money on that shit necklace he gave me!" She pointed towards a picture of her boyfriend sipping from the girl's drink.

"Evee, calm down."

"Tell me Chloe, does that look like a guy who's thinking about his girlfriend?! Does it?!" Evee forcely closed the laptop a little too roughly. "Because at the moment he was being this little cunt, I was working my ass off in the hospital! Like a good little girl! Missing my boyfriend. Thinking about my boyfriend."

Chloe was shocked at Evee's words, "No but I-"

"Tell me what it is that I did wrong, did I love him too much? Was I too immature? Am I too fat? What does she have that I don't?" Chloe knew that around this time, she would break down. She had seen her do it before over Freddy. Instead of replying, the brunette just wrapped her arms around her friend's neck. "Just tell me he's an asshole, Chlo." Evee couldn't help but sob, her eyes were watering up and she couldn't stop the tears from pouring into Chloe's t-shirt.

"Nothing's wrong with you, you're perfect. He's the biggest asshole I've ever met. And that's a lot coming from me, you know how I like royalty." Chloe mumbled, rubbing her friend's back.

Evee couldn't help but chuckle through her tears. "I hate royalty. Except Will and Kate and the kids and Charles and Camilla and the rest of his family."

"Yeah I like all those too, except the ginger." They shared a minute of silence while the brunette held her blonde friend. "Want to get into yoga clothes and just eat a bucket of ice cream?"

Evee nodded her head, marching towards the bedroom, she grabbed the comfiest outfit she could think of. An oversized Ravenclaw HP sweater (Ravenclaw was her house) and just some yoga pants. She wiped away her tears and quickly put her hair into a hair knot. She hated being so vulnerable. She had decided not to contact Harry and let things pass for a little while. She didn't have the energy to argue anymore.

When she went back towards her living room, she was surprised when Chloe was on the phone. "It's for you."

Evee looked confused. "If it's Harry tell him to leave me alone."

"It's Catherine." Chloe wasn't even impressed that she just spoke to the duchess of Cambridge on the phone for the very first time. She was too upset for her friend.

"Evee." Eveline heard a voice at the other side of the phone. "I've seen the pictures." Kate spoke silently.

Evee nodded her head, forgetting to actually answer.

"I personally think Harry's a shithead." She had never heard such words coming out of Kate's mouth.

"I don't think you're the only one who thinks that." Evee replied.

"Yes. I've seen the papers. They're not giving him any slack, are they?" Kate paused. "Not that they should. We're on your side with this one... William's really mad at him. He had a conversation with him over the phone, well it was kind of a one way situation because Will didn't really let him talk all that much." Kate shrugged, careful with her words, she knew Evee would be a wreck. She felt bad for the nurse. "Harry kept saying that there was an explanation. That he was sorry, Will said he was crying over the phone. That he couldn't reach you."

"There's pictures Kate." Evee mumbled, "I don't think you just run into your ex-girlfriend in South Africa."

"No. No probably not." Kate shook her head. "He told Will they didn't kiss."

Evee nodded her head, she really had to think things through. He made her look like a fool in public (something she was sure her father would never forget). How would things ever be the same again?

There was absolutely no way.

He had broken her trust in the worst single way. He was always so protective about her, scared that the papers would write something off about her. Scared that the paps would haunt her down.

And now, now he did this?

Every promise he had spoken to comfort her, to protect her, was countered by the actions he did 24 hours ago.

He didn't care at all. He just didn't think.

Who was the person?

"Can I give you some advice?" Kate questioned, spoke at the blonde. "Take some time for yourself. Hang out with your friends, try doing fun stuff. I know it's difficult but let it rest for a while. Just to really get some sense of reality."

Evee nodded her head, closing her eyes, she didn't want to cry again.

"And when you are ready, only when you are ready, give him a chance to explain. I know it looks like he does not deserve one right now but one day, you'll want to hear the truth, rather than all that stuff strangers, who have never met you two, are writing about."

"Yes. Thank you, Kate. This call means a lot."

"Oh and by the way, if you were to ever go out, make sure you look extra good and put a smile on that gorgeous face. Believe me, he'll crawl."

Evee was a little surprised but she could really hear the anger through Kate's voice. She knew Kate once went through a break up with William, she remembered seeing pictures of Kate went she went out without him in the past.

Evee could tell that the whole situation was a little personal for Kate. Damn, she was fiercer than she thought.

"I'll tell you what you're going to do. Do you have to work this weekend?" Kate questioned, waiting for a response. When Evee simply spoke no, she continued "You're going to put on the best damn dress you have, show off those goddamn legs and you're going to have fun. And you better make sure, they photograph you really well. If things go well, he'll be crying at your door by the end of the weekend."

"I'm not really entirely sure I'd be ready for that. Not the going out part, I mean him crying at my door." God, she couldn't even say his name anymore, it just sounded strange in her mouth.

"Evee, I cannot wrap my head around the whole situation. I do not understand it, but I trust Harry when he said he loved you. He has praised you so much even before we met you. Did he drink too much? Maybe. Were the pictures just at the wrong time, wrong moment? Maybe. Are we missing something? I just. I don't know." Kate spoke confused.

"At the moment- I just. I think I am more upset that he was so reckless in public. Letting them take the pictures in general. He always said he'd do anything to keep things private, yet this happens. And the fact that he met up with his ex without even mentioning that to me. I would have liked to know."

"100 procent agree." Kate stated. "You are allowed to be upset, to be furious actually. Do that for the next upcoming days, but then, try picking yourself up, would you? No man is worth putting yourself down for."

"Yes." Evee whispered. "I am stronger than this."

"Of course you are. You've managed to move to another country and start a new life here. You have saved so many children and the ones you couldn't save, you've managed to be there at their side every step of the way. You are an incredible woman and you're going to get through this."

It took a while for the words to sink in, but Kate was right. She was going to get through this.
