Chapter Thirty Five
It was the weekend of June 25 and 26 that Harry met Evee's parents for the first time. The nurse had no choice but to confess her fear of flying to Harry because he wanted to go by plane (even though it was a one hour flight). Him, being a pilot himself, had laughed at her. He had explained that she had a way better chance of dying in a motorvehicle on the ground than in a plane. Which resulted in both of them bickering after Evee told him that if she were to get in a planecrash she wouldn't make it out alive, if she had a carcrash there would still be a little chance at survival.
It was after Evee started hyperventilating and cursing at the same time that Harry took her serious. He also realised there was no way they would join the mile high club today.
When the plane finally set foot on the ground again, Evee was so happy she bought three bars of chocolate and ate all of them at once. "Can I get a piece?" Harry questioned, still amazed that she wasn't full yet.
"I don't know. You weren't really supportive on the plane." Evee replied, taking another bite.
"I was! I wanted to comfort you but you slapped my hands away!"
"You laughed at me the first half an hour!"
"How can I not laugh at you? You were cursing in Dutch and I know I heard my name in there somewhere!" Meanwhile in the front of the car, James was silently listening to the couple trying to hold back a smile.
"Fine. But it wasn't anything personal. Here." The nurse took one tenth of her chocolate bar and passed it to her boyfriend.
"Are you serious?" Harry stared at the tiny piece of chocolate in his right handpalm.
"What?" She mumbled, eating another piece herself.
"You can hardly call this a piece! Give me more!" Harry argued, trying to grab the last piece of chocolate out of her hands.
Evee couldn't help but laugh when he leaned over her, fighting for the chocolate. When the bickering finally stopped (even Harry had to admit, she had put up a strong fight), they were a half an hour away from Eveline's home. "Harry, stop fidgeting with your shirt. You'll be fine." The nurse had noticed how his normal 'I'm so nervous' routine was starting. He always tugged on his clothes, he licked his lips a little too much, tapped his fingers on his thighs.
"I can't help it. This is a big deal. What if they don't like me?" He looked at her uncertainely with his bright blue eyes.
"They'll love you because I love you. You make me happy, they'll see that." Evee smiled, wrapping her right hand over his tapping fingers.
Harry nodded, silently praying that her father wouldn't go too hard on him. He knew how to interract with people, he was raised by his parents to be a gentleman. He knew how to be polite. "Yes, okay."
"I didn't say they wouldn't test yo-"
"Wait, what?" His eyes flashed towards her in worry.
"It should be the normal, 'what are your intentions with my daughter? Why are you naked on the internet?'- kind of stuff." Evee shrugged, looking outside of the window. It was weird seeing the cars drive the other way again.
"Your father knows that?!"
"I didn't tell him but I'm sure he googled your ass. He's worse than the FBI."
"Oh god." Harry stomach turned. How would he explain that one?
"Look, my dad's a smart guy. He knows there are a lot of lies on the internet."
"Okay. Okay. I should be fine, right? I'll be fine." Harry mumbled more to himself than to Evee.
"Of course, but pictures don't lie." Eveline grinned, Will had asked her to tease his brother in the car and she was doing a good job. Shame, she didn't have it on camera. The nurse knew everything would be okay, her family was quite accepting and she knew there wouldn't be any problems. Her father would act a little distant but she knew he would open up eventually. She noticed Harry turning pale when the car pulled over in her parents' driveway. "I'm kidding sweety, just be yourself. You're very charming."
Harry nodded his head, his eyes scanning the house in front of him. It wasn't too big yet it wasn't too small either. It was what he imagened her growing up in. There were flowers in front of every window and the lawn was neat. A little path was paved towards the front door. "Come on, I see smoke, they're already setting up the bbq." Evee grinned, opening the cardoor and bouncing around in the driveway.
Seeing her so happy, made Harry's nervous feelings go away. It was all worth it in the end. He quickly opened the cardoor, placing his Ray-Ban sunglasses on his nose. He noticed that she didn't go to the front door but went to the back. It was when he heard laughter and people talking in Dutch that his stomach turned again. Would they be able to talk to him? He didn't understand Dutch and Evee never spoke about the language barrier. He didn't have the chance to think about it to much because his thoughts were interrupted by cheers. They had spotted Evee.
"Mama!" Eveline ran towards her mother with opened arms, it had been too long that she hugged her.
The blonde woman held back tears when she finally had her daughter back in her arms."Eveline! Je bent vermagerd, eet je wel genoeg?" (Eveline! You lost weight, have you been eating properly?)
"I work a lot of hours in the hospital, come, I want you to meet someone!" Evee spoke in English towards her mother, she knew it would be easier for Harry and her mother would understand. Quickly grabbing her mother's hand she marched towards Harry, who was standing on the lawn with James right next to him.
Harry was surprised when the spitting, yet older image of his girlfriend walked towards him with a warm smile upon her face. "You must be Harry, it's lovely to meet you." He heard the woman speak in a thick accent, Evee beaming with joy right next to her.
"It's really nice to finally meet you as well, Mrs Delamane." Harry wanted to give the woman a handshake but was crushed into a hug. He quickly wrapped his arms around Evee's mother, noticing how his girlfriend gave him a grin and two thumbs up.
"Please, call me Ingrid." She finally let him go, "Come, I'll introduce you to my husband, he's at the barbeque."
"How's papa?" Evee questioned, grabbing Harry's arm and giving him a smile. She knew how nervous he was.
"Goed, very eager to meet you Harry." Ingrid spoke, walking across the lawn to the stonebuild barbeque. Harry could finally see Evee's father. Judging his back, Chloe was right when she said he was a big guy.
"Papa!" Evee screamed, dropping her boyfriend's hand and running towards her father.
Her father turned around, a grin forming on his face. "My little girl! Come here!"
The nurse finally made it towards her father, she felt him wrap one arm around her waist, lifting her off the ground. "I've missed you." She mumbled, wrapping both her hands around his neck.
"Ik zie dat je iemand hebt meegebracht." (I see you've brought company.)
"Be nice daddy, he makes me happy." When Danny finally released his daughter, he turned around towards her boyfriend. Taking in his ginger hair, his tall height and casual clothing, Danny couldn't really see that he was a prince.
"It's nice to meet you, Mr Delamane. Thank you for inviting me into your home, it's lovely." Harry spoke in one fluent sentence, making Evee proud.
The nurse noticed how her father squinted his eyes at her boyfriend. Typical. "Harry, was it?"
"Yes sir." Harry nodded his head.
"Good to meet you as well."
Evee didn't want any awkward silences so she just interrupted the conversation, grabbing Harry's hand again. She noticed how her father's eyes went to their linkes fingers but ignored him. "When are Alexander and Jess coming?" She asked, she couldn't wait to see her brother's family.
"They should be here any minute now. Let's get you guys something to drink." Ingrid smiled warmly at the couple, but pointed her finger from her husband towards the bbq, implying how he should continue. Harry immediately knew where Evee got her attitude from. He was surprised when Danny gave Ingrid a wink and a sweet smile.
When Eveline and Harry marched towards the pattio, he could hear another car pulling up. "That should be my brother, his wife and my two nephews. Don't believe anything he says by the way." Eveline turned towards Harry.
"Where's mom second favorite child?!" Evee heard her brother yell from a far, giving an elbow to Harry when he chuckled.
"Where's my shithead brother?!" The blonde screamed back between her handpalms.
"Eveline! The kids!" Her mother looked at her in anger.
Evee rolled her eyes, grinning when her brother came towards her with opened arms. Thinking she would get a hug, she opened her own, laughing. It was when Alexander stopped in front of her, ignoring her opened arms and gave Harry a big bear hug, she had the face of a slapped arse.
"You must be Harry. Now do tell me, how did she do it? Did she drug you?"
Harry laughed next to Evee, the tall man with brown hair didn't look like Evee at all. He had his father's looks, whereas Evee had her mother's. "No, I don't think she did though. Right, Evee?"
"Are you guys serious right now?" The blonde looked at her brother and her boyfriend with her arms crossed. "Where are my nephews they're more adults than you guys are."
She wanted to walk towards the driveway when Evee suddenly felt arms wrap around her from the back. "I'm kidding! My sister's a real catch Harry. I've missed you, asswipe."
Evee grinned, happy that she had her brother back in her arms. "You've gotten fat by the way." She laughed, feeling him push her away.
"They're muscles."
"Yeah, keep telling yourself that. Where's Andreas and Matteo?" She couldn't wait to see her godson and her other nephew.
"They're with Jess, they went inside."
"Come." She quickly grabbed Harry's wrist dragging him inside the house.
"Don't let her tell you what to do! Before you know it she's got you whipped. Let her go, we can have a beer." Evee's brother spoke.
Eveline gave him an angry glance but it was Harry who replied chuckling, "I promise we'll have a beer in a minute, I actually really want to meet your children . I've heard a lot about them."
"Good luck with that though, Matt's been throwing a tantrum because the airconditioning in the car wasn't up to his standards. Got it from his mother. I'm off to dad." Harry watched as Evee's brother turned around and walked towards the bbq.
"Your brother is a replica of you, characterwise. You have the looks of your mother though." Harry laughed, relieved that he had met almost everyone.
"We're both very sarcastic, if that's what you mean." Evee grinned, opening the terrasdoor and stepping inside the dining room. She was immediately attacked by two little boys, who had grown up way too fast since the last time she saw them. "Auntevee! Auntevee!"
"Hey kleine bengels!" (Hey little munchkins) Eveline laughed lowering herself and wrapping both of her arms around her nephews. "Ik heb iemand voor jullie om te ontmoeten." (I want you guys to meet someone)
Harry was standing in front of her, looking down at her with a grin on his face. He quickly pushed the sunglasses on top of his head. "Hello! I'm Harry." He spoke, crunching down.
Andreas, the elder one, looked at Harry with a shy smile. His brown hair a top of his head, shining in the sunlight. Harry noticed how he had bright blue eyes and glasses. The smaller one, Matteo, the blonde/ginger haired kid wasn't shy at all and immediately pulled Harry into a hug. "Hallo." He mumbled.
Evee laughed as Harry stood up with Matteo around his waist. "Andreas, zeg eens hallo. Dit is aunt Evee haar vriend." (Andreas, say hi, this is aunt Evee her boyfriend.) A different voice spoke, the nurse recognized it immediately as her sister in law, Jessica.
"Jess!" She beamed, still having her arm around Andreas, the 5 year old mumbled a hello to Harry, who gave him a wide grin. "Hoe is het?" (How are you?)
"Goed. Heel erg geschrokken toen ik het nieuws hoorde." (Good. Very shocked when I heard the news.) The tall auburn haired 30 year old quickly made eyecontact with Harry, giving him a proper hello and a handshake.
"This is my sister in law, Jess." Evee spoke. "I think you've met everyone now apart from my aunt and uncles." She didn't have any grandparents anymore, she never met her grandfather from her father's side, he died young and her father was born when her grandmother was 40, so her grandmother passed away when Evee was fifteen. On her mother's side, her godmother (which was also her grandmother) died of breastcancer when she was sixty (Evee was six) and her mother's father died four years ago from a stroke. Eveline had been heartbroken, he was her hero.
Harry quickly said his hellos, shaking Jess her hand. Evee couldn't help but notice the faint blush on her sister's in law's cheeks. Wiggling her eyebrows behind Harry's back towards Jess didn't make it any better.
Dinner was how Evee was used to it, her mom talking too loudly all the way through it, her father quietly watching his wife with a smile on his face. Her brother teasing her way too much and Matteo threw a tantrum every thirty minutes. It wasn't that much different than having dinner at William's house, Evee noticed. Even Ingrid forced James to take a seat and eat with them. Evee had never seen the man so uncomfortable in her life but couldn't help but laugh. Even Harry had to fight back a smile when James first said no to dinner, shocking Eveline's mother. She had grabbed his arm, dragged him to the chair right next to her and pushed him on it. Harry noticed that Evee's mother kept an eye on his security guy every ten minutes, making sure he actually ate properly.
When Harry thought he couldn't eat anymore, Ingrid brought out a homemade applepie that smelled so good, he couldn't (and didn't dare) to say no when she offered him a piece that could easily feed three people. "For me just a little piece mom, Ik zit vol." (I'm full) Harry heard his girlfriend speak right next to him. The sun was setting in the background as he enjoyed the birds still cheeping in the cherrytree a few feet from him. Not once did he feel like an outsider, her father hadn't asked him any strange questions, he was a little quiet around Harry though. Evee had warned him about that. She said he would warm up to him in time. The prince somehow knew that Eveline's father would ask him questions and he was quite certain it would be when Evee wasn't around.
"Zolang je maar vol zit van de taart is het goed he, zus." (As long as you're full from the pie and not something else) Harry knew instantly that her brother said something wrong because her mother cursed at him and his father was choking on his piece of pie.
He saw that Evee squinted her eyes at her brother. "Very funny."
Harry felt a little uncomfortable when her father looked at the both of them with a worried yet slightly angry glare. "I'm not pregnant dad. Stop looking at us like that. I'm almost twenty six and we've been together for four and a half months. What did you think we would do, play chess?" It was Harry's time to choke on his apple pie when he heard his girlfriends outburst.
When he said he was a little uncomfortable before, that was a lie, he was uncomfortable now.
