Chapter Thirty Eight

The weeks towards Harry's departure went smoothly. She had seen Charles a second time at William's by coincidence and it wasn't awkward at all. They had discussed how things were at work, how much she'd miss Harry when he was in South Africa but that she could understand why he had to go. Charles had asked her how she was doing with all the paps and it seemed as if he came to like the blonde nurse. She was friendly and easy to talk to. Even Charles had to admit that the girl was very pretty, he wasn't afraid to tell her that she had beautiful green eyes. Evee had blushed and accepted the compliment in response.

Harry and Evee's last night together was spent having a home cooked meal at his place and making love afterwards. When they finally had to say their goodbye's, Evee wanted to hide herself in one of his suitcases. "I'll miss you." He mumbled.

"I'll miss you too. Text me when you arrive?" She questioned at the door.

"I will. You'll lock this place up when you leave?"

It was the first time she'd be alone at his place. She didn't really know how to feel about that. "I will. I'm going to my apartment when I'm dressed anyways."

"You don't have to. You can stick around here if you like."

"I don't want to be an intruder." Evee smiled, watching how a black Range Rover pulled up in front of the house. "Bye, mister Sheeran."

"I wish I could punish you for saying that but I don't have the time." He squinted his eyes at her, lowering his voice.

"I'll put it in my agenda for when you get home." Evee replied, grinning at him.

"Better clear up your schedule for a day or two then."

"Oh, I will." She replied, giving him one last kiss. "Have a safe flight.

"I'll try. Bye."

"Goodbye." She watched from the doorway how James put Harry's suitcases in the back of the car. "Bye James!" She yelled one last time towards the security guy, receiving a big smile from him and a nod.

With pain in her heart, she watched how the car drove away. Leaving her alone in this big house. How the hell did she end up here anyways? Her eyes scanned the huge courtyard in front of her. She was standing in the private section of Kensington Palace. How crazy was that? People would die to be in her spot.

It was time to go home.

The following three days leading up to the weekend were spent at work. Evee didn't really have time to think about Harry because the floor was understaffed and it was very busy. She had called him two times in the last three days and hoped she would hear more of him throughout her free weekend.

It was Thursday after her early shift that she needed some groceries. Ignoring the clicking sounds from cameras (atleast they weren't shoved up her face), she made her way into Tesco. Deciding she would just cook some rice and beans tonight, she quickly made her way towards the register. It was at Chloe's favorite part of the store- the part with all the magazines- that her feet abruptly stopped. Her eyes slowly read the headlines of The Sun.

"HARRY, THAT'S NOT EVEE!"

Who's not Evee? Where's Evee? Wait, what?!

Eveline didn't understand. She quickly looked around at the store, there were no windows, they couldn't photograph her reading the paper. There weren't any customers around either. Her fingers wrapped themselves around the newspaper, opening it up. She knew The Sun always wrote the biggest bullshit and she had learned that she shouldn't believe everything they wrote.

But this was not written.

Her fingers trembled around the corners of the paper. There in front of her face was a clear photograph of Harry holding on to another woman. Apparently Chelsy Davy, she read. It wasn't a normal hug. She could only see the woman's long blonde hair because she was standing towards the camera with her back, but she could see Harry's face.

She knew it was a recent picture because they had bought the jacket he was wearing together at the Diesel store a couple of weeks before.

The woman had both her arms wrapped around his waist. His one arm wrapped around her neck, like he always gave his hugs, the other arm was covering his jacket (the one they had bought together) around the woman's frame, preventing her to get cold. Her head was in his neck, his eyes were closed. This was not the way you hugged a friend. It was an intimate hug.

"TURN TO PAGE FIVE TO SEE THE KISS!" Was written underneath the photograph in bold letters. Like it was some sort of a theatrical spectacle.

Evee couldn't do it.

She couldn't turn to page five.

Her hands were trembling too hard. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, she looked up to the ceiling, she wasn't going to cry in public. Dropping the newspaper on the ground, she didn't even bother to pick it up, she quickly grabbed her groceries and moved towards the register. The cashier was staring at her a little too long and she knew she was recognized.

The older lady had the pity in her eyes Evee always hated.

Her heart was beating a million miles an hour when she walked back towards her car.

He cheated on her.

Harry cheated on her.

With his ex-girlfriend.

He apparently kissed her and held her, all this occurred when she was working her ass off at the hospital, taking care of sick children. She was absolutely disgusted. She drove off the parking lot on to the streets. It was one of those drives where you kind of know you're driving a car, but you have no idea how you got home. Her mind was racing.

How could he?

She never saw him capable of doing that. She never mistrusted him. Not a single hair on her head had even thought that he could cheat on her. The thought never even come up, she never had that fear. Their relationship was one of a kind. One you could only read about but never think it would happen to you. Why would he throw that away?

To be with his ex-girlfriend of seven years? On and off in misery?

She knew first loves were special. She understood that. She had the same relationship with Nathan, you don't just forget your first love, it's impossible. But she would never throw her own relationship under the bus to be with him again.

Evee knew she was working herself up. She was getting angry. It was a defensive mode she always had when she was hurt. She didn't cry, she got angry. How long had this been going on? He obviously met with her in South-Africa. Did they have the arrangement already when he was still at home?

She was good at assessing people but she didn't think Harry was capable of lying to her face. Technically he didn't lie, he just hid the truth.

Her teeth were gnashing together when she parked her car. Grabbing the groceries and closing her car door a little too roughly, she marched towards her apartment. From around the corner, she could see the paparazzi's in front of her door. All twenty five of them, holding the biggest cameras she had ever seen so far. They obviously wanted her reaction when she got home.

'Evee! Have you seen the photo's?'

'Eveline, what's your reaction?'

'Did you think he was capable of cheating?'

'Are you guys still together?'

They were shouting a million things at once in her face. She was almost at the door, if she could just hold on a little longer. Bite your tongue Evee, bite your tongue. She had been able to do it for five months, she did it all for him. She had been shoved and yelled at. They wrote that she was a whore, that she was a nothing.

She didn't care because she loved him.

She loved him.

She would have ran miles bare feet to be with him.

And he had broken her into a million tiny pieces.

Just like that.

As if it was so simple.

How dare he?!

It was when she heard one particular question that she couldn't keep her mouth shut. It would be the first time that the public would hear her speak, the first time they heard her voice.

'If Harry was here, what would you say to him?!' One guy yelled from the back.

Her hand was on the door handle. She could have easily marched into the hallway, forgetting about their questions. But she had been good, she had been so good for so long. She had taken everything in, she had accepted shouting and cursing like it was beauty to her ears.

Not this time though.

"That he should leave me alone."

And with that, she closed the door behind her.
