Chapter Thirty
Harry had shown Eveline Nottingham Cottage and she thought it was incredibly charming. It wasn't as luxurious as she thought it would be. It was smaller than his brother's place and she liked the fact that it made her feel like home. It was cosy. The ceilings were low and there was a lot of woodwork.
She had told Harry how much she had loved it, how it made her feel and he in reply just grinned at her. Harry was surprised, the last girlfriend he had didn't like it whatsoever. It was too small and too boisterous. Then again, most of his girlfriends came from a lot of wealth themselves, they were used to big mansions.
The evening after the dinner, they had watched some television together with Evee's feet on Harry's lap and afterwards, they had made love in his bed. When the following morning arrived, Evee wasn't so nervous anymore to meet with his brother and his wife. The breakfast table was filled with jokes and stories of the past. Never once did Evee think she was an outsider. They all made her feel very welcome. It made her wonder if they always did it with Harry's girlfriends before. Surely, having breakfast with William and Kate didn't happen every time Harry had been together with a woman for two months?
Deciding she shouldn't have concerns about things like that and should just enjoy the moments of laughter, she forgot about it all together.
Weeks had passed and it was usually spent with Harry at her place. It was easier for her to get to work. They had yet to have their first argument (which didn't consist of what they wanted to watch on tv or which pizza to order). It was nice, Evee was glad their bubble stayed strong.
Friday June 10th, Evee thought it would be a good idea to call her mother and enlighten her with the situation. She wasn't sure how she would make her mother believe it, she was very naive, something Evee had inherited from her. The nurse could always show her a picture of Harry and her. The one standing on her bookshelf. Chloe had taken it two weeks ago. Harry was making one of his silly faces and Evee threw back her head laughing. If you didn't know any better you wouldn't be able to tell that they were a couple, but if you somehow knew Harry's daily expressions, you'd be able to see the look of adoration in his eyes.
Evee shrugged, Harry told her he was visiting an army base for an engagement and he wouldn't be able to see her today. Picking up the phone, she quickly Facetimed her mother. Evee smiled when she saw the blonde woman with the same green eyes on her screen. People always said that they looked so much alike. "Hey schat!" ("Hey, sweety!") Her mother spoke with a familiar smile on her face.
"Hey mama. Hoe is het?" ("Hey mommy, how are you?") Evee spoke, sitting down at her dinner table so she could place the phone against her fruit bowl.
"Goed! Het is hier al super warm geweest! Daar?" ("Good, it's already been super-hot here, is it as bad over there?")
"Niet te warm en niet te koud, valt goed mee. Is papa daar?" ("Not too hot, not too cold. It's alright. Is daddy there?")
She watched as her mom nodded her head at her, "Hij is net buiten aan het werken met Alexander. Moet ik ze gaan halen?" ("He's working outside with Alexander. Do you want me to get them?")
Evee groaned, she knew telling her parents was one thing but telling her brother was another. She couldn't keep him outside either, it had been a while since she actually saw him. "Ja, haalt hem dan ook maar." ("Yeah, get them both.")
She watched as her mother left her telephone on the table. She could hear her screaming loudly in the background towards her father and her brother. "Het is Eveline aan de telefoon." ("Eveline's on the phone!")
Evee had to wait another ten minutes when they finally arrived on her screen. Her brother was the first to speak, "Evee! Nog altijd niet zo knap als ik, zie ik." ("Evee! Still not as handsome as I am, I see.")
Her mother stepped in immediately. "Alexander! Stop het. Het is de eerste keer dat je uw zus in maanden ziet en je begint alweer!" ("Alexander! Stop it. It's the first time you see your sister in months and you're already starting with a fight!")
Evee watched as her older brother rolled his eyes as she stuck out her tongue at him. "Anyways, ik wou even laten weten dat ik deze zomer nog eens een paar dagen naar België kom." ("Anyways, I wanted to let you guys know that I'm coming to Belgium this summer, just for a couple of days.")
"Super! Wanneer?! We kunnen barbequeen!" Her mother spoke, clapping her hands. ("Amazing! When?! We can have a barbeque!")
"Ik denk eind juni of begin juli. Te zien wanneer het best past voor ons." ("I'm thinking the end of June or the start of july. Depends which is best for the both of us.")
"Met ons bedoel je, jij en ik, toch?" Her father looked at her with a worried expression, somehow he already knew what was happening. ("With us you mean, you and me, right?")
"Well nee... Euhm, sinds een paar maanden heb ik een lief." ("Well no... Euhm, since a couple of months I actually have a boyfriend.") She carefuly watched their reactions, her mom smiled at her sweetly, her brother stood there with his arms crossed and his eyebrow raised and her father just looked troubled.
"Het is niet die Fred gast, toch?" ("It's not that Fred guy, is it?") Her father spoke sternly. He obviously hadn't forgotten about last year.
"God no." She shook her head at them.
"Waarom niet? Moest hij u niet hebben? Was mijn meisje wel goed genoeg voor op te zitten maar niet goed genoeg voor een relatie?!" ("Why not? Didn't he want you? Was my girl good enough to use but not good enough to have a relationship with?!")
"Danny!" Evee's mother slapped his chest. "Stop!"
"Papa! Nee! Ik moest hem niet hebben. Het is iemand anders." ("Daddy! No! I didn't want him. It's someone else.")
"Wie dan?" ("Who is it then?")
"Wel, euhm... Dat is het probleem. Hij is nogal relatief bekend en jullie kennen hem ook." ("Well, euhm... That's the problem. He relatively well known and you probably know him as well.")
Her family members were looking at her confused. Finally her brother spoke up, "Mathias?"
"WHAT?! NEE!" Evee was so grossed out by the fact that they even had that idea. It was just... Wrong.
"Maar best! Al die keren dat die jongen op uw kamer heeft geslapen!" ("It better not be! All those times that boy has slept in your room!")
Eveline was actually almost ready to just give up. She had to face the fact that her family was indeed, full of morons. She sighed, "Hang on." She left her telephone on the dinner table and marched towards the picture of Harry and her. Grabbing it, she walked back towards her seat, holding it in front of the telephone.
She held back laughter as she saw her mother grab her glasses. They all were staring at the telephone screen very closely. After two minutes of silence her brother screamed, "Oh my god, ik ken die!" ("Oh my god, I know that guy!")
Evee was almost ready to scream hallelujah when her brother continued. "Alee, uw obsessie heeft u eindelijk iets opgebracht." ("Hey, your obsession was finally worth it.")
Her obsession?!
She was never obsessed with Harry.
"Over wat heb je het, Xander?" ("What the hell are you talking about, Xander?")
"Dat is toch die gast van Harry Potter? Die rossen? De beste vriend van Harry?" ("That's the guy from Harry Potter. The ginger one? Harry's best friend? Right?")
Eveline groaned once again. Placing her head on the table. It just wasn't happening today. She'd have tell them another time. Maybe after she already moved to Mexico with Harry.
("Mom, do you remember a couple of months ago when I told you on the phone that I've met a prince? At work, in the hospital?")
Finally, her mom seemed to register her words. "HOLY SHIT." Her mom never cursed.
"Ma!"
"EVELINE! A PRINCE?!"
"Kan er hier iemand mij in godsnaam vertellen wat er aan het gebeuren is?!" ("Can someone please for godsake tell me what the hell is happening?!") Her father spoke, interrupting her mother's screams.
In the mean time, her brother was coming to earth, realizing who was on that picture with his baby sister. Finally he laughed, receiving an angry glare from Evee, and with a smug grin Alexander spoke to his father. "Oooooh pa. Gij hebt geen idee he? Dit wordt nog goed." ("Oh dad, you really have no idea, do you? This is going to be good.")
"Het is een prins! Weet je nog princess Diana? Die haar zoon! Prince Harry. Het is toch Harry, he Evee?" ("It's a prince! Do you remember princess Diana? Her boy! Prince Harry. His name is Harry, right Evee?") Her mother spoke, looking very excited.
"Ja, hij noemt Harry, ma." ("Yes his name is Harry, mom.") Evee ignored her brother chuckling and shaking his head in the background.
"Een prins? Eveline?" ("A prince? Eveline?") Her father questioned looking in concern at his daughter. She was the last person he would have expected to bring home a prince. Evee was never a materialistic girl.
"Kijk, we zien elkaar graag, oke? Mathias en Margot hebben hem al ontmoet. Ik heb zijn broer ook al ontmoet. We komen deze zomer naar België en ik hoop dat jullie zich een beetje gedragen." ("Look, we love each other, alright? Mathias and Margot already met him. I've already met his brother forgodsake. We're coming to Belgium this summer. I hope you guys will actually behave.") She spoke to all three of them, she knew her mother would be too enthusiastic, she'd probably feed him 10 times a day. Her father would glare at him at a distance and her brother would tell all her embarrassing stories after he scares Harry with tales of her father pounding on previous boyfriends.
"This is crazy." She heard her father mumble.
"Ik weet het, ik kan het soms zelf nog niet geloven. Voor de moment is Harry, noch steeds gewoon Harry. Ik denk dat ik het pas zal realiseren als iedereen ervan weet." ("I know, I can't believe it myself. At this moment, Harry is just, my Harry. I think I'll realise it, you know how big of a deal this is when the public knows.")
She watched as her family nodded their heads, finally comprehending the situation. "Ik heb echt jullie support nodig. Oke? En serieus, tegen niemand zeggen. NIEMAND." ("I really need your support, alright? And seriously, you cannot tell anyone. NO ONE.")
They all nodded their heads once again, "Breng hem maar mee. Ik wil die wel eens ontmoeten." ("Bring the boy along. I'd like to meet him.") Her father spoke.
"Alleen als je beloofd hem niet te veel angst aan te jagen. Hij is al nerveus genoeg." ("Only if you promise not to scare him too much. He's already so nervous.")
"Gaat niet gebeuren." ("I won't.") Somehow she didn't really believe her father. The fact that her brother was grinning at her, didn't bring any comfort either.
She was on the phone for another 20 minutes with her family when she finally hung up. It wasn't so bad. She was glad she had said it. She could understand their concerns.
Evee just hoped they would accept him into the family as much as his family had accepted her.
