Chapter Sixty Two
To say that Chloe was enthusiastic was the least. The whole car ride was spent singing along to Jason Derulo's Marry Me and in the meantime, trying not to cry. It didn't even matter that the song wasn't about her. She was so happy for her best friend. When she finally parked her car in front of her building, she quickly forced herself to the second floor towards her apartment. With her working every day and in the mean time contacting Harry about the ring, she didn't have the time to work out for the past week.
It was already four o'clock but that didn't disturb her cheery mood. "I'll say will you marry me, I swear that I will mean it. I'll say will you marry me. Singing Woah oh woaaaah." She sang along walking through the corridor. The brunette searched for her keys, standing in front of her door, slightly shaking her skinny butt to her own tunes.
"Well, well, well if it isn't pinokkio." Chloe immediately dropped her keys, carefully turning around. In the corner sat her best friend with a cup of chicken soup.
"Evee! Hi!" She forced a smile on her face, trying to think of a good excuse. She knew she was caught red handed.
Eveline stood up, trying not to spill the soup, that was already cold by now. "Do you even know how long I've sat here? Just waiting for my poor sick colleague?"
"Not that long I hope." Chloe chuckled nervously, opening her apartment door in the process.
"You're not sick, are you?" The blonde squinted her eyes at the short brunette, who now placed her fist in front of her mouth and let out a pathetic cough. "Yes I am."
"You are the worst liar! These tissues aren't even used!" Evee picked up one of the dozen tissues which were spread around strategically in her apartment. "You never call in sick." Placing the soup on top of Chloe's dining table, she took a step closer to her best friend. Squinting her eyes, she looked straight at the girl. "In all of the time we've worked together, you've never called in sick."
"Is it so hard to believe that I'm actually sick for once?" Chloe spoke, adverting her eyes. She hated how intimidating her best friend was.
"I'm a nurse. I know when someone is sick." Evee spoke, placing her arm in her side. Pushing her head closer to Chloe's neck, she sniffed her best friend.
"Get away from me!" Chloe spoke, taking a step back. Chloe knew how much Evee loved Harry's cologne and she had been around Harry for the past few hours. That and the fact that her best friend had a nose of a bloodhound, didn't make it any better.
"You smell like a man. Come here." Evee knew there was something familiar about that smell.
"No. I don't want you to get sick as well, step back!" Chloe spoke, walking backwardly towards her kitchen.
"I know that smell... Stand still."
"No! Get away!"
Evee managed to grab both Chloe's wrists, plunging her nose in the girl's neck once again. When the realization finally hit home, she abruptly let go off both her wrists. "It's not what you think it is, Evee. I swear."
"You've been with Harry." Why had she been with Harry? What was going on? They wouldn't? Right? She was her best friend and she loved Harry so much.
"I... I can't tell, I can't tell. Don't make me do it." Chloe stammered, a little scared underneath Evee's glare. She was praying the girl wouldn't punch her.
"You better fucking tell me what you've been doing... You're coming home smelling like MY boyfriend's cologne while I'm sitting outside with soup for my dear sick best friend. Oh wait, yes and you expect me to just let it go." Evee squinted her eyes at the tiny brunette, taking a step closer.
Chloe's back bumped into one of the kitchen counters and she could see her friend stepping closer like a predator. "He's not cheating if that's what you're getting at."
"Then tell me what you're doing at his place, it can't be that bad, right?"
"I can't."
"Oh you can and you will." Evee nodded her head, opening the fridge to spot a can of chocolate sauce. Quickly wrapping her fingers around it, she closed the refrigerator.
"What are you doing?" Chloe stammered, already knowing her best friend's plan.
"Have you been working out lately?" Evee smiled sweetly, playing with the bottle of chocolate in her hands.
"N-no-no, I haven't had the time."
"278.9 calories per serving." The blonde read from the back of the bottle.
"Don't you dare." Chloe spoke, shaking her head at her best friend.
"Just a bit of chocolate won't hurt."
"You're going to regret this, I swear to god, you're going to regret this. You'll have to name your firstborn after me when this is all through, I swear Evee. You'll have to buy me a new car because you'll swim in your own regret." Chloe spoke bravely, ignoring the evil smile on her friend's face as she stepped closer.
"Open that little mouth of yours."
"Let me go! Aarrgh! Let me go." Chloe struggled to push Evee's hands off of her arms. The girls managed to push each other around in the kitchen, as the blonde tried to squirt the chocolate sauce in Chloe's mouth. Finally slipping their feet in the mess, they both fell down on the floor and continued their little fight.
"Tell me! Tell me what you've been doing at Harry's!" Evee screamed, sitting on top of the brunette, both of her legs straggling the girl's waist.
"I can't! I can't! They'll behead me! This is serious matter, Evee! I can't tell you!" Chloe spoke, trying to block the chocolate sauce from dripping into her hair with her hands.
"Why were you singing Jason Derulo in the hallway? You hate Jason Derulo!"
"I don't hate him! The song just got stuck in my head!" Evee managed to grab both Chloe's wrists, pinning them above her head. In her right hand she held the bottle of chocolate, which was now daggling with the opening above Chloe's head.
"Why were you singing 'Will you marry me?' Why?!"
"I CAN'T TELL YOU. PUT AWAY THE BOTTLE, EVELINE I SWEAR TO GOD."
"Are you- Is Harry- Wait, whao whao whao. You guys are up to something, you guys are up to something... Don't tell me it is what I think it is. The song. You calling in sick while you're not sick. You'd never do that unless-" Her eyes adverted from the small bottle in her hands towards her best friend's face.
"I can't tell you."
"Is Harry- Is Harry up to something?" Evee squinted her eyes again, slowly realizing the situation she was in. "You don't have to tell me. Just blink your eyes if I'm right. I won't tell him, I won't. This is serious matter Chloe, if Harry's up to something, I NEED you to tell me."
Evee watched how her best friend bit her own lip underneath her. She was still straddling her on the kitchenfloor. "He surely can't have marriage thoughts in his mind, right?"
The blonde watched how Chloe swallowed deeply. "Chloe..."
When the brunette blinked her eyes, Evee dropped the bottle of chocolate on the floor. "Oh my fucking god, Chloe."
"I didn't do anything, I didn't do anything! I just blinked! My eyes were getting dry and it's a natural instinct to blink when they do!"
"He's going to propose. Harry's going to propose. My boyfriend's going to propose." Evee mumbled, bringing her hands towards her hair, not even caring if there would be chocolate all over it. "This can't be happening. Tell me this isn't happening Chloe."
"Evee, that boy is ridiculously in love with you. He's smitten." Chloe at least expected her friend to be excited. She didn't expect this reaction.
"A PROPOSAL, CHLOE?! A FUCKING PROPOSAL?!"
"You love Harry."
"I love him to death, Chloe but that doesn't mean I should get on his fucking white horse and ride away in the sunset!" She raised her voice. "I won't be able to ride away anywhere! I can't marry him, I can't Chloe. I can't marry him." Evee shook her head and stood up, trying not to slip on the messy ground.
"You're already not able to ride anywhere! What are you fucking talking about, Eveline?!" It was the first time Evee saw Chloe so angry. "Are you absolutely mad?!"
"I won't be able to face him ever again, I won't." Evee mumbled, taking her purse to get out of the door.
"You better fucking stay in this apartment until this conversation is finished, Eveline Delamane else I will be the one forcing you down the floor and it won't be with fucking chocolate sauce. It'll be with a kale fucking smoothie."
"You wouldn't." The blonde spoke in a warning tone. "You know I hate those things."
"And I hate fucking chocolate sauce, but look where that got me!" Chloe stood up, showcasing her dirty chocolate covered outfit. "This is a fucking Calvin Klein sweater!"
"I'll buy you a new one." Evee mumbled. Even she had to admit that she was a little embarrassed now, she had forced her friend on the floor, doubted the trust in her and ruined her sweater. "I'm sorry Chlo."
"We're going to talk about this." Chloe spoke. "I don't even care if there's going to be chocolate sauce all over my art deco chairs. Sit the fuck down."
"Fine." The blonde mumbled, for the first time in her life actually being a little scared of Chloe.
"Why are you so scared of Harry proposing?" Evee's colleague spoke, plopping down on the opposite chair of Evee.
"Do you even realize the consequences about being married to Harry?!"
"Did you realize those when you stepped into that relationship? Or were you just strutting along to break his heart in the end?" Chloe spoke. She loved her best friend but she was on Harry's side for this matter.
"No of course not, I love Harry." The blonde mumbled in reply. "Isn't it a little too soon though? I mean, I'm only 26, we haven't even had our first year anniversary."
"Eveline, you need to listen to me, right now." Chloe took one of Evee's hand in her own. "You guys are so ridiculously in love that every time I look at you two a slight part of me wants to kill myself because I haven't found what you guys have and I'm scared to death I'll never be able to find it."
"Chlo-"
"No. You have such an amazing relationship and sometimes I think you take that for granted. You have a man who loves you so, so much Evee. You should have seen the look in his eyes when he searched for that ring. You should have seen the way he spoke of you. You cannot break his heart, I won't let you." The brunette shook her head at her friend. She noticed how Evee's eyes were getting teary.
"He was in the newspapers hugging his ex half a year ago, Chloe." She knew she shouldn't have said it. Evee knew it was such a low blow.
"You cannot be fucking serious right now." Chloe dropped her friend's hand. "If you're going to hold that against him for the rest of the relationship, you better put a stop to it now. You know nothing happened and you know Harry had his hands tied."
"I don't even know what it means to be married to Harry. There are many things I don't know about him." Evee sighed.
"Then ask him. Ask him, Eveline! What's holding you back! Ask him what would happen with your job, where you would live, ask him about his mother, ask him about his time in Afghanistan, ask him about his relationship with his brother. You guys are together almost every time you're not at work, why don't you?!"
"I don't know... I'm scared I'll scare him off, I guess."
"Evee, people might not think this but out of the two of us, you always had the brains. I might be punctual and decent and never late but I've never had your brain. I had to study my ass off so bad to get this job, you've partied your way into this and you still do it like you've done nothing else in your life but now, now you're being the dumbest girl in the entire world." Chloe looked into the nurse's eyes. "You won't be able to scare him off, you won't Eveline. Even if you decided to shave off all of your hair, he'd still go for you, I'm sure. Being engaged, does not mean being married. You'd still have plenty of time to talk about everything and prepare. Harry doesn't expect you to be perfect, he expects you to love him. Do you love him?"
"He's the reason I look forward to the next day."
"Harry can't promise to fix all of your problems, Evee, but he can promise you that you won't ever have to face them alone and that's what he's planning on doing." Chloe couldn't help but smile at her best friend, the shock had left Evee's face ten minutes ago and was now replaced with content. "Please let him do that. I want you to be safe and happy. I know your place is with him. You're my best friend."
Evee nodded her head, "I love you, Chloe."
"I love you too and Evee, after all, I do know best." The brunette smiled.
"It hurts me to say that you always do." The blonde sighed, looking up at her friend.
"You're going to love the ring. I've never seen anything more gorgeous."
"Harry's got remarkable taste, doesn't he?" She spoke, scrunching her nose and laughing.
Chloe laughed, "If you ever tell him I even peeped about a ring or a proposal, I will actually make you drink that kale smoothie. This conversation never happened."
"What conversation?"
